NEW TREATMENT FOR HEART ATTACKS

Paul Riley (University College London's Institute of Child Health), has managed to regenerate heart cells of mice with myocardial infarction induced by arterial clamping, turning special cells of the epicardium into cardiac muscle cells, which were integrated into the existing heart cells. A process carried out routinely in embrionic state, but impossible in the adult. Ability reactivated in mice using protein tβ4 (thymosin β4). used in healthy and diseased mice to convert epicardial cells in other tissues. It was also observed that the infarct scar size was reduced significantly and the cardiac performance of mice improved. is thought to be useful in early stages of heart attacks in humans. If given within the first hour post-infarct it would prevent great harm. It is thought Tβ4 will be useful as a preventive measure for people at high risk (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, genetic or family disposition). Although posr-infarction patients now live longer, the survival imply great suffering. We conclude that the best treatment for heart attack is the reactivation of dormant stem cells from infarcted hearts.
