FULL FACE'S TRANSPLANT

Spanish doctors from Vall d'Hebron hospital (Barcelona), has just carried out successfully the first full transplant of face (entire skin, superior and inferior maxillary bones, palate, cheekbone, nose, muscles, teeth). A pioneer process because apart from solving the aesthetic problem and function of face’s muscles, exalts the kindness of plastic surgery and microsurgery. The patient, a 30 year-old farmer that accidentally shot himself in his face 5 years ago, converts the movie Face/Off , in reality. Before the face transplant, the patient didn't speak; alone breathed and ate through tubes. Now he speaks, eats and laughs.

Previous to the transplant the patient was extracted what was remaining of his skin, leaving him only his tongue and eyeballs. His denuded face was replaced then with whole skin, muscles and donor's bones in a process that last 24 hours. The operation shows the success of neurovascular microsurgery, allowing to unite accurately small blood vessels and nerves with full recovery of sensibility and motor function. Now it is hoped to set aside infections and self attacks of immunologic system against the donated tissue. The french woman Isabelle Dinoire (partial face transplant/2005), is well, after having overcome successfully two self immunologic attacks.

TRASPLANTE TOTAL DE CARA

Médicos españoles del hospital barcelonés Vall d’Hebron acaban de realizar exitosamente el primer trasplante total de cara (piel entera, huesos maxilar superior e inferior, paladar, huesos del pómulo, nariz, musculos, dientes). Un proceso pionero porque aparte de resolver el problema estético y la función de los músculos de la cara, ensalza las bondades de la cirugía plástica y microcirugía. El paciente, un agricultor de 30 años que se autodisparó accidentalmente en su cara hace 5 años, convierte en realidad la película Contracara (Face/Off). Antes del trasplante, el paciente no hablaba ; solo respiraba y comia por tubos. Ahora habla, come y rie.

Previo al trasplante al paciente se le extrajo lo que quedaba de su piel dejándole solo lengua y ojos. Su denudada cara fué entonces reemplazada con piel entera, musculos y huesos del donante en un proceso que duró 24 horas. La operación muestra el éxito de la microcirugía neurovascular, permitiendo unir con precisión pequeños vasos sanguíneos y nervios con plena recuperación de la sensibilidad y la función motora. Ahora solo queda sortear las infecciones y ataques del sistema inmunológico contra el tejido donado. La francesa Isabelle Dinoire (trasplante parcial de cara/2005), se encuentra bien, tras haber superado exitosamente dos ataques inmunológicos.
