FIRST PICTURES OF MERCURY

After 6 ½ years of travel, the American Messenger spacecraft entered the orbit of Mercury, the planet's smallest and closest to the Sun. Scientists already have the first photos of some 75 000 to be obtained over 1 year. At the moment we know that: I) Like our without atmosphere moon, is full of craters II) During the day its surface reaches 800 degrees Fahrenheit and minus than 300 degrees F during the night and perhaps Mercury is a bit cold. III) Perhaps now be explained why certain shades never go away in craters located near its poles where the sun never shines and where there might be water ice. IV) In the following days, the Messenger will measure emissions of neutrons, gamma and X rays in order to deduce the minerals present in its surface. V) To understand why having half the mass of Mars, Mercury has a magnetic field presumably generated by a molten outer core that Mars does not have VI) While Mars and our Moon have one piece tectonic plates, Mercury has few giant tectonic fragments, which could represent a embryonic state, before splitting into multiple movable plates like those on Earth.
