NOBEL PRIZE IN PHYSICS 2011

WATCH VIDEO

2011 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to astronomers Saul Perlmutter (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory), Brian Schmidt (Weston Creek/Australia) and Adam G. Riess (Space Telescope Science Institute/Johns Hopkins University/Baltimore) for his discoveries -since 1998- of accelerating expansion of the universe, observing Type Ia supernova explosions (stars as heavy as our sun but as small as the Earth), emitting as much light as the total of our galaxy. Using sophisticated telescopes on earth and in space, powerful computers and new sensors for digital imaging (CCD), they studied 50 supernovae found that their light was weaker than expected -a sign that the expansion of the universe was accelerating- feeling that if this continued to accelerate (forced by dark energy, which makes up ¾ of the universe), our universe ultimate fate is cold, very cold. According to quantum theory, empty space exerts a repulsive force like that exerted by dark energy but that is 10 120 times stronger than that measured by astronomers, leaving open the possibility of the possible existence of multiverses.
