SMART CITIES

One week ago died William J. Mitchell, theoretic and planning of transport and construction of futurist urban cities and re-designer of automobile. For the author of Reinventing the Automobile, it was not difficult to conceive sustainable cities by means of radical changes in its infrastructure. Let us see some of their ideas and works: I) Futurist cities provided with great scale robots with sensitive nervous systems to solve necessities of the inhabitants and of external environment. II) Vital force of Smart Cities Lab (design of automobiles and re-design of urban transport), of MIT. III) Developer of CityCar: an electric, slight, folding vehicle and of the GreenWheel that transformed an ordinary bicycle into another electric one IV) In Reinventing the Automobile he sketched ideas around personal urban mobility of 21 century. V) He embraced the ideas of his students motivating them to make them real.

VI) He directed a program of constructions to the interior of MIT that transform the physical campus: 5 innovative architectural projects: Frank Gehry's Stata Center, Kevin Roche's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center, Steven Holl's Simmons Hall, Charles Correa's Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex and Fumihiko Half Maki's Lab Complex that expressed the values and hopes of the MIT, in which each building is unique and at the same time coherent part of all, with routes for pedestrians, common facilities and natural views everywhere, united in a vibrant residential community that he designed in one weekend in a hotel of Dublin. VII) Being one of the first in understanding the deep effects of computation on architecture and of internet in daily life, he always showed a marked interest in the relationships among the real thing, the virtual space and human communities.

Hace una semana falleció William J. Mitchell teórico y planificador del transporte y construcción de ciudades urbanas futuristas y rediseño del automóvil. Al autor de Reinventing the Automobile, no le fue dificil concebir ciudades sostenibles mediante cambios radicales en su infraestructura. Veamos algunas de sus ideas y obras: I) Ciudades futuristas con robots a gran escala provistos de sistemas nerviosos sensibles a las necesidades de los habitantes y del medio ambiente externo. II) Fuerza vital del Smart Cities Lab (diseño de automóviles y reconstruccción del trasporte urbano), del MIT. III) Desarrollo del CityCar: un vehículo eléctrico, ligero, plegable y del GreenWheel, que convertía una bicicleta ordinaria en otra eléctrica IV) En Reinventing the Automobile esbozaba ideas en torno a la movilidad urbana personal, del siglo 21. V) Hacia suyas las ideas de sus estudiantes motivándolos para hacerlas reales.VI) Dirigió un programa de construcciones al interior del MIT que trasformaron su campus físico: 5 proyectos arquitectónicos innovadores: Frank Gehry's Stata Center, Kevin Roche's Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center, Steven Holl's Simmons Hall, Charles Correa's Brain and Cognitive Sciences Complex and Fumihiko Maki's Media Lab Complex, que expresaban los valores y esperanzas del MIT, en los que cada edificio es único y a la vez parte coherente del todo con rutas para peatones, facilidades comunes y vistas naturales por doquier, unidas en una vibrante comunidad residencial, que diseño en un fin de semana en un hotel de Dublin. VII) Siendo uno de los primeros en entender los profundos efectos de la computación sobre la arquitectura y del internet en la vida diaria, mostro siempre un marcado interes en las relaciones entre lo real, el espacio virtual y las comunidades humanas.
