ARTIFICIAL HEART

CARMAT: BIO-CYBORG HEART

Two heart conditions that impair  daily pump  blood to various organs are: coronary artery occlusive disease and cardiomyopathies. When medications to treat these conditions fail and continuous cardiac failure goes on, exist the option of heart transplantation. This option requires be included in a waiting list that can give us the winning ticket only after several years. Sometimes there is a donor heart, but the receiver is not eligible. If   continuous deterioration of cardiac function exists, we can use temporary artificial blood pumpers (CardioWest/SynCardia Company), until a donor heart appear. Faced with this problem, the company Carmat SAS, led by the French surgeon Alain Carpentier, has launched a fully artificial biomechanical heart, whose characteristics are: I) Anatomic  and functionally it is the closest thing to a human heart. Built with biocompatible materials (bovine tissue, chemically treated) synthetic (plastic), simulate  the contraction of a human heart, showing sensors to detect increases in blood pressure or need for increased blood flow (exercise), inducing instantaneous self-regulation. II) People who use this device need not be anticoagulated. The possibility of rejection is zero. III) Their average lifespan is 5 years: 230 million heartbeats. IV) Its weighs is 900 g. Its external lithium-ion-batteries must be recharged every six hours. Devices that monitor electrical power source and others are carried in a bag hanging from the left shoulder. V) Costs: $ 180,000 VI) Designed for cases of terminal heart failure, return the patient to an active life. VII) An innovative heart, which outlines the future design of fully artificial hearts: less complexity, minimum weight (500 g), longer life (20 years) and overall biocompatibility.
