Dark matter film: Crime in scientific fields.

In November of 1991, Gang Lu, a Chinese youth, ex-graduate from a Doctorate of Physics of the University of Iowa, opened fire killing their adviser, the boss of the Program of Physics and 4 people but. As long as the physical youth one commits suicide the causes of so painful event even give cause to many speculations. Nevertheless, everything suggests that the main motivation resides in the impossibility that the doctoral thesis of Gang Lu, won the prize Spriesterbach, granted to his previous roommate and rival Linhua Shan. Chen Shi Zheng, graduate of the University of New York for that time and expert of many conflicts between Chinese students and their American advisers, reminds a poster of that time expressing "long life to Lu." Shing-Tung Yau, mathematical of Harvard mentor of many young mathematicians adds that Chinese families wait much of their children, turning them in highly competitive. Lu, was part of a family recruited in 1980, to come to Iowa to study the physics of plasm. Gerald Payne, professor of Physics in Iowa says that they were exceptional students, that Lu was competitive but not very sociable and that he lived alone. As Lu, before dying accused the official of his misfortune, Dr. Payne sustains that as much his adviser as the Physical Boss, tried to help him and they had given him recommendation letters for jobs. But Lu, would not have been realistic in their demands.

Everything suggests that the deep causes of this murder would lie in an inadequate relationship : adviser (consultant)/postgraduate, as long as the advisers, recommend, suggest when to defend the thesis and value the work, been pressed by the necessity of carrying out original contributions, a process that sometimes bears to desafectión and fights against feuds of long life. Chen Shi Zheng, graduado de la Universidad de Nueva York por esa epoca y conocedor de muchas pugnas entre estudiantes chinos y sus tutores americanos, recuerda hasta ahora un cartel expresando “larga vida a Lu”. Shing-Tung Yau, matematico de Harvard mentor de muchos matemáticos jóvenes agrega que las familias chinas esperan mucho de sus hijos, tornándolos en altamente competitivos. Lu, formaba parte de una familia reclutada en 1980, para venir a Iowa a estudiar la fisica del plasma. Gerald Payne, profesor de Fisica en Iowa dice que eran estudiantes excepcionales, que Lu era competitivo pero poco sociable y que vivia solo. Como Lu, antes de morir culpara a la oficialidad de su desgracia, el Dr. Payne sostiene que tanto su tutor como el fisico Jefe, habian tratado de ayudarlo y le habian dado cartas de recomendació para trabajos. Empero Lu, no habria sido realista en sus demandas.

Todo sugiere que las causas profundas de este asesinato yacerian en una inadecuada relación tutor (consejero)/doctorando, en tanto los tutores, recomiendan, sugieren cuando defender la tesis y valoran el trabajo, urgidos por la necesidad de realizar aportes originales, un proceso que algunas veces conlleva a desafección y luchas contra feudos de larga vida. Los doctorandos son como aprendices dice Michael Turner, cosmólogo de la universidad de Chicago- la unión entre un tutor y un graduando es para toda la vida semejante a un matrimonio. James Dickerson, fisico de la Universidad de Vanderbilt agrega que dice que algunos asiaticos son marginalizados y aislados de la comunidad y cultura americana, porque son inteligentes, trabajan 24 horas al dia y 7 dias a la semana, Aunque con ciertos agregados de ficción, mucho de lo anterior es recreado en la pelicula Dark Matter, dirigida por Chen Shi-zheng, escrita por Billy Shebary y estelarizada por Liu Ye, Aidan Quinn y Meryl Streep. El film gano el Alfred P. Sloan Prize at the Sundance Film Festival en el 2007.
