PHYSICISTS and HARRY POTTER`S CLOAK

To the German physicist Ulf Leonhardt doesn't care a lot that many call him Harry Potter, for turn invisible to people and things or, to levitate objects. Contrary to magicians that hide their secrets zealously, Leonhardt explains the reason of the phenomena that he studies. The physicist adduces that objects can be turn invisible if they are surrounded by electromagnetic waves (instead of reflecting light on them), the way the water flow around a rock. And that the best way of to study and to perfect knowledge on this phenomenon is to carry out analogies among the particularities of the event horizons of spatial black holes, with the movement of electromagnetic waves surrounding objects turned invisible. Consequence of the above-mentioned is the growing employment of metamaterials (dielectric means with ingenious geometries, to drive the light), able to obviate the long routes deployed by camouflage cloaks.

To levitate objects (mirrors), Leonhardt uses the forces of attraction and repulsion of Casimir, manipulating forces of quantum vacuum -forces of neutral atoms- able to self-form dipoles for separation of their loads, in states of quantum-superposition, so the positive side of a dipole attracts the negative of other, maintaining seemingly empty spaces (levitation).

No le importa mucho al físico alemán Ulf Leonhardt, que lo llamen Harry Potter, por tornar invisibles a personas y cosas o, levitar objetos. A diferencia de magos que ocultan celosamente sus secretos, Leonhardt explica el porqué de los fenómenos que estudia. El físico aduce que los objetos se tornan invisibles si se hacen circundar ondas electromagnéticas alrededor de objetos (en vez de reflejarlas sobre ellos), al modo como fluyen las aguas alrededor de una roca. Y, que el mejor modo de estudiar y perfeccionar conocimientos sobre este fenómeno es realizar analogías entre las particularidades del horizonte de sucesos de los agujeros negros espaciales, con el movimiento sui géneris de haces electromagnéticos circundando objetos tornados invisibles. Consecuencia de lo anterior es el creciente empleo de metamateriales (medios dieléctricos con ingeniosas geometrías, para conducir la luz), capaces de obviar las largas rutas desplegadas por capas de camuflaje.

Para levitar objetos (espejos), Leonhardt usa las fuerzas de atracción y repulsión de Casimir, manipulando fuerzas del vacio cuántico : fuerzas de átomos neutrales, capaces de formar dipolos por separación de sus cargas, en estados de superposición cuántica, de modo que el lado positivo de un dipolo atraiga al negativo de otro, manteniendo espacios aparentemente vacios (levitación).
