Libraries of the next future.

Diverse circumstances allow me to attend from principles of January/07 to the splendid library of South Miami (a branch of a circuit of 40 libraries of the county of Miami: Miami Dade County. Public Library System). This branch is located to about 50 meters of the warm beaches of South Beach (touristic center par excellence in USA). Being foreign they had to good to grant me a temporary guest library card (1 year), with which I accede freely to all the collections of the library including the use of computers (free: 2 hs/day). There is more: 1) the second floor with 35 computers and diverse collections is exclusively dedicated to take care of students of first and second level (indicative of the American educative cosmovisión). In the first floor (of a building of 2 floors and 250 m2), there are services of scan, photocopy, impression, fax, etc to 15 cénts per/sheet. The use of computers (40, in the first floor), including laptops is free. 2) One can take to house up to 7 books/x/7 days (to 15 cents each/book), as long as the user credits residence, otherwise alone he can read them in the library. The facilities of the library are excelent (fashion comfortable armchairs everywhere, light suitable and regulated of day and night, clean and excellent restrooms, distilled water everywhere, permanent information service, restaurant opened all day, security all the day, adjacent rooms to rest as desired, reading’s tutors formation on the part of the library. The attention is permanent : 9.30 a.m.-9 p.m. (M-T), 9,30-6pm (F-Sat) 1pm-6pm (Sun). If something unexpected occur the director announces it by a loudspeaker.

3) The important thing for us is a) the authorities library's desire by which all residents in Miami become avid readers. b) a personal and constant attention of the director of the libray and all the very kind employees to solve any problem of readers c) the intense preoccupation to have in display the main magazines and titles of books of the present time worldwide. There are books for blind and deaf people, audio, videos and many connections to other services. With so many facilities they give desire us to remain here to make an intense productive work. 4) These days were difficulties to connect the librarie’s PC in permanent form to Internet. I noticed then certain loss in the affluence and certain incomodity of certain sector of the library's users. I interpret this attitude as a valid proof of a previous prediction (Ciencia: July/08/2005) ours: the future’s reader tends to be audio-visual and omniinformative (he wants all the information quickly), which not speak bad about the existence of shades. Therefore, the libraries that have not adequate online connections (with computers and audio-visual innovations renewed constantly), are going to die. The malaise was surpassed partly because many readers began to take to the library their personal laptops. As you dear reader knows, all South Miami counts on broadband, which allows wireless connection to Internet. What I observe is that when the reader (asimilator of information), goes to excellent libraries like this, but not to seat to read books exclusively, but to provide itself with whichever information is possible with whichever means is possible. So, the modern reader tends to combine resources (online media, magazines, books, etc), deciding single in the end a specific subject to which he will dedicate preferential attention. As we said it before the libraries of the future would be totally computerized.

Bibliotecas del futuro.

Diversas circunstancias me permiten asistir desde principios de Enero a la espléndida biblioteca de South Miami (una filial de un circuito de unas 40 bibliotecas del condado de Miami : Miami Dade County. Public Library System). La filial está ubicada a unos 50 metros de las calurosas playas de South Beach (centro turistico hotelero por excelencia de USA). Siendo extranjero tuvieron a bien otorgarme un carnet temporal (1 año), con el que accedo libremente a todas las colecciones de la biblioteca incluyendo el uso de computadoras (gratis : 2 hs/dia). Hay más: 1) El segundo piso (35 computadoras y diversas colecciones están dedicada exclusivamente a atender a estudiantes de primer y segundo nivel (indicador de la cosmovisión educativa americana). En el primer piso (de un edificio de 2 pisos y 250 m2), hay servicios de scan, fotocopiado, impresión, fax, etc a 15 céntimos de dolar/la hoja. El uso de computadoras (unas 40,en el primer piso), incluyendo laptops es gratuito. 2) Uno puede llevarse a casa hasta 7 libros/x/7 dias (a 15 centimos c/libro), siempre y cuando acredite residencia, de lo contrario solo puede leerlos en la biblioteca. Las instalaciones de la biblioteca son exquisitamente cómodas (sillones confortables por doquier, luz adecuada y regulada de dia y noche, servicios higienicos limpios y excelentes, agua destilada por doquier, servicio de información permanente, seguridad constante, comedor abierto todo el dia, formación de tutores de lectura por parte de la biblioteca, area de star colindante si se desea descansar. La atención es permanente de 9,30 am-9 pm (L-J), 9,30-6pm (V-S) 1pm-6pm (D).Si existe algun imprevisto el director lo anuncia por un altavoz.

3) Lo más importante para nosotros son 3 cosas : a) el deseo de que todo residente en Miami sea un avido lector b) la exquisita y atenta atención del director (un distinguido americano de bigotitos, que cual gran ojo vigila constantemente que todo ande bien) y todos los empleados muy atentos a solucionar cualquier problema de los lectores c) la intensa preocupacion por tener en vitrina las principales revistas y titulos de libros de actualidad de todo el mundo. Hay libros para ciegos y sordos, audios, videos y muchas conexiones a otros servicios. Con tantas facilidades dan ganas de quedarse a realizar una intensa labor productiva. 4) Estos dias hubo dificultades para conectarse en forma permanente a internet. Noté entonces cierta baja en la afluencia y cierta incomodidad de cierto sector del público. Interpreté esta actitud como evidencia sólida, de una predicción previa nuestra (Ciencia/08/July/2005): el lector del futuro tiende a ser audiovisual y omniinformativo (quiere rapidamente toda la información), lo que no desdice la existencia de matices. Por tanto, las bibliotecas que no se computaricen (o no introduzcan constantemente innovaciones audiovisuales), estan destinadas a morir. El malestar fué superado en parte porque muchos lectores empezaron a llevar a la biblioteca sus laptops personales. Como sabrás caro lector, todo South Miami cuenta con banda ancha, lo que permite conexion inhalámbrica a internet. Lo que observo es que el lector (asimilador de información), acude a excelentes bibliotecas como esta, pero no a sentarse a leer libros exclusivamente, sino a proveerse de cuanta informacion sea posible a través de cuanto medio sea posible. El lector moderno tiende a combinar recursos (medios online -introductorios- revistas, libros, etc), decidiendo solo al final un tema especifico, al cual dedicará atención preferencial. Como lo dijimos antes las bibliotecas del futuro seran totalmente multimedia y computarizadas.
