BIONICS

The analysis of functionalities of many alive beings -normal inhabitants of nature- has generated brilliant ideas along the history. From the frontal thickening of fins of whales, derives the idea of building mobile surfaces in airplanes. In Berlin, the functionality of changing ways of feathers of birds is imitated, to object that wings of airplanes consummate less energy. The conditions of temperature, humidity and ventilation of homes of termites are imitated to create human houses but comfortable. Imitating particularities of the tube sucker of the mosquitos, painless injections was created. It is sought to imitate the spider silk, able to build hammocks with steel quality, to keratin, main component of hair, horns and fingernails, to create flying robots (Ronald Fearing/University of Berkeley) to supervise or find lost people. Robots with feet similar to those of geckos (small lizards that ascend and descend for diverse surfaces by means of forces of van der Waals, present in their almost 500,000 setae with sizes of double diameter that of human hair).

These functionalities (achieved by means of accidental mutations and natural selection), converted in successful to all alive being, creating non elegant creatures -although superefficient- with a single goal: to survive. Goals different by the way to that of many current engineers, lovers of aesthetics and a functionality stuck to strict rules. The above-mentioned examples has created Bionic (application of biological methods and natural systems to the study and design of engineering systems and modern technology) and Biomimetic that tries to understand the natural principles and to improve them. Some discoveries are impressive: the colors of many birds and tropical insects are not conditioned by pigments. They are but well the result of physical laws: certain corporal microscopic structures, reflect certain wave longitudes originating colors but alive, useful concepts in cosmetic and cards with holograms. Michael Rubner and Robert Cohen emphasizes that in this area is important the combination of biological knowledge and the pragmatism of the technique and engineering.

BIONICA/BIOMIMETICA
