THE OLDEST MAIZE

Dolores Piperno had to be the first to propose where were located the older versions of corn in America. This researcher (National Museum of Natural History/Washington), do not search botanical macroremains, but microscopic of maize (pollen, phytolites, starch grains), through all America. According to her, the oldest traces of maize (teosinte: Zea spp), are in the tropical valley of Balsas/Mexico (10,000 years BC). After analyzing starch grains, found in rocks and accumulated concretions in plants (phytolites), she established that the size of seeds and the quantity of starch of the current maize is double than that shown in teosinte, criteria useful for investigating early stages of evolution, domestication and subsequent dispersal of maize.
