AIRPORT BODY SCANNERS

After the recent failed attack (Dec,25), with bomb to an airplane in route of Detroit to Amsterdam, the sales of body scanners (backscatter X-rays that provide passengers' images without clothes), to the U.S. Aviation Safety Authority ascended to 150, of a requested total of 450, enlargeable to 900. A scanner used per years in American prisons. In other places and according to Handelsblatt, the European market for these machines (50,000 units), skirts 9 billion Euros. At the moment participant companies are: Rapiscan Systems, L3 Communications (USA), Smith Group, QinetiQ, Thruvision (UK) and Brijot (France).

Although backscatter X-rays provides very clear images, opposition exists to its use since the images show naked people and being x-rays, some doctors as David J. Brenner (Columbia University's Center for Radiological Research), argue that “you cannot exclude the possibility of a fatal cancer in a great exposed population to very low dose of radiation". Others said that it would take but of 1,000 screenings per individual, per year, to exceed radiation standards. Although with total radiation absence, minimum invasion of privacy and smaller resolution (needed but of 50 gr of certain substances to become visible), in Europe the Institute for Photonische Technologies in Jena (IPHT), offers the Terahertz-Kamera that captures body heat waves located in infrared-microwave range. In spite of their disadvantages some argue that the important thing is to detect the dangerous thing, without affecting passengers.

ANALIZADORES CORPORALES EN AEROPUERTOS

Un scanner utilizado por años en prisiones americanas. En otros ámbitos y según Handelsblatt, el mercado europeo para estas maquinas (50,000 unidades), bordea los 9 billones de euros. De momento las compañias participantes son: Rapiscan Systems, L3 Communications (USA), Smith Group, QinetiQ, Thruvision (Reino Unido) y Brijot (Francia).

Aunque los backscatter X-rays proporcionan imágenes muy claras, existe oposición a su uso ya que las imagenes muestran a las personas desnudas y tratándose de rayos x algunos médicos como David J. Brenner (Columbia University’s Center for Radiological Research), arguyen que no se puede excluir la posibilidad de un cancer fatal en una gran población expuesta a dosis muy bajas de radiación”. Otros, retrucan que tomaria mas de 1,000 screenings por individuo, por año, para exceder los estándares de radiación. Aunque con total ausencia de radiación, minima invasión de la privacidad y menor resolución (se necesitan mas de 50 gr de ciertas sustancias para visibilizarse), en Europa el Institute for Photonische Technologies in Jena (IPHT), ofrece la Terahertz-Kamera, que capta ondas de calor corporales ubicadas en el rango de infrarojas y microondas. Pese a sus desventajas algunos arguyen que lo importante es que detecte lo peligroso, sin afectar a pasajeros.
