120 years ago (1892), the city of Saint Gervais located to the foot of Mount Blanc -the mountain but high of Europe- was flooded by mixtures of mud, water, rocks and mud, dying 200 people. Today under the glacier Tête Rousse exist a full water cave without natural exit, with potential to flood the valley again. French authorities have reacted pumping this water toward an empty hidden lake on the fear that the valley be flooded again or that ice breaks throwing big masses of water (65 million liters), to the valley. The process is difficult because of the localization of the glacier. There are not roads and perforation and pumping equipment is transported by means of helicopters. A titanic work of uncertain success, since according to some experts, the extracted water of the cave could be again refilled if watery connections exist with other internal caves located under the glacier.

PREVINIENDO UN DESASTRE

Hace 120 años (1892), la ciudad de Saint Gervais ubicada al pie del Monte Blanco -la montaña mas alta de Europa- fué inundada por mezclas de lodo, agua, rocas y arboles, muriendo 200 personas. Hoy bajo el glaciar Tête Rousse existe una cueva llena de agua sin salida natural, con potencial para inundar nuevamente el valle. Las autoridades francesas han reaccionado bombeando esta agua hacia el lecho de un lago glacial vacío, ante el temor de que el valle sea inundado nuevamente o que el hielo se rompa y lance grandes masas de agua (65 millones de litros), al valle. El proceso es difícil a causa de la localización del glaciar. No hay caminos y todo el equipo de perforación y bombeo es transportado mediante helicópteros. Una titánica labor de éxito incierto, ya que según algunos expertos, el agua extraída de la cueva podría ser repletada nuevamente de existir conexiones acuosas con otras cuevas internas ubicadas debajo del glaciar.
