ALOPECIA

Very important the work of Angela Christiano (Dermatology and Genetics/Columbia University Medical Center) for her discoveries of genes implicated in the development of alopecia areata. As Angela sensed that this kind of alopecia involved multiple genes I) she simultaneously checked the DNA of 1,000 patients with alopecia and other 1.000 (control group) without alopecia, finding 139 markers of this disease in the genome. To her surprise she also found that the genes identified were not related to autoimmune diseases: psoriasis and vitiligo, as it was thought, but maintaining certain relationship with rheumatoid arthritis and celiac disease. II) Angela also has built a national register of genes involved in different types of alopecia, in a way that it will allow comparison of genomes of people with and without alopecia. III) It is expected that these findings will permit improvements on existing drugs on the market IV) Immune aspects of these diseases will now be better studied using simple procedures such as skin biopsies.

Importante la labor de Angela Christiano (Dermatology and Genetics/Columbia University Medical Center), por sus trabajos relacionados con el descubrimiento de genes implicados en la alopecia areata. Como Angela intuía que en esta alopecia estaban implicados múltiples genes I) chequeó simultaneamente el DNA de 1,000 pacientes con alopecia y de otros 1,000 (grupo control), sin alopecia, encontrando 139 marcadores de la enfermedad en el genoma. Para su sorpresa encontró además que los genes descubiertos no guardaban relación con ciertas enfermedades autoinmunes : psoriasis y vitíligo, como se pensaba, guardando eso si relación con artritis reumatoide y enfermedad celiaca. II) Angela ha contruido además un registro nacional de genes implicados en distintos tipo de alopecia, de modo tal que se puedan realizar comparaciones de genomas de personas con alopecia y sin el. III) Se espera que con estos hallazgos las drogas existentes en el mercado sean perfeccionadas IV) Los aspectos immunes de estas enfermedades serán ahora mejor estudiadas valiéndose de procedimientos tan simples como biopsias de piel.
