BRAIN and FREE WILL

Michael Gazzaniga (Psychologist, University of California/Santa Barbara) with more than 45 years, dedicated to the study of people with brain split personality has published: The Ethical Brain,  that redefines concepts of responsibility, free will , uses of neuroscience in society and in the courts. Gazzaniga argues that: I) Division of labor exists between brain hemispheres: the left hemisphere (lh), is the intellectual, the right hemisphere (rh) is the visual-spatial skilled artist. Example: to a patient with cerebral split personality, was showed to his rh, the image of a bicycle. He saw nothing, because his lh was cut and lacked visual input and information coming from the rh. Although he saw the bicycle, his rh lacked language to name it. However he could direct the hand and control the drawing of the bicycle. Thus, his rh, identifies objects by touch, feeling, seeing the image. Although the brain systems are separated there is a sense of brain unity. II) That new knowledge of neural processes are related to human responsibility. The brain is guided by an autopilot that act first and ask questions later. III) If our behavior is automatic when I'm responsible for my actions?. Where is my free will?.

IV) That current brain-scanning technology is not ready as reliable evidence in the legal system. V) That developing neurons are coded to congregate in specific brain areas that specialize in certain tasks, with simultaneous local connection and intercommunication between two hemispheres. VI) The lh always tries continuously to give a coherent explanation to aware consciousness. The lh is the interpreter that creates illusions and inserted subconscious motives. VII) Gazzaniga asks whether in the future, our responsibility will be determined by studies of our neural circuits. He further argues that such findings will be applied in the brain legal system, mitigating responsibilities of certain crimes or validating the veracity of certain statements. Gazzaniga concludes that ultimately, responsibility (brain emerging property) is a contract between two people, rather than a cerebral property, which obeys to different laws. Responsibility will be redefined. Meanwhile its implications must be sought in our hearts, in human moral intuitions, in their laws and customs.

Michael Gazzaniga (Psicologo de la Universidad de California/Santa Barbara) con mas de 45 años, dedicados al estudio de personas con personalidad cerebral dividida ha publicado : The ethical Brain, en el que redefine conceptos de responsabilidad, libre albedrio, usos de la neurociencia en sociedad y en las cortes de justicia. Gazzaniga sostiene que : I) Existe división del trabajo entre los hemisferios cerebrales : el hemisferio izquierdo (hi), es el intelectual, el hemisferio derecho (hd), es el experto artista visuo-espacial. Ejemplo: a un paciente con personalidad cerebral dividida, se le presento la imagen de una bicicleta a su hd. No vio nada, a causa del corte al hi, que carecia de ingresos visuales y de informacion del hd. Aunque el hd que vio la bicicleta carecia de lenguaje para nombrarlo, podia dirigir la mano y controlar el dibujo de la bicicleta. Asi, el hd, identifica objetos con el tacto, sintiendo y viendo la imagen. Aunque los sistemas están separados existe un sentido de unidad cerebral. II) Que, nuevos conocimientos de los procesos neurales tienen que ver con la responsabilidad humana. El cerebro es guiado por un piloto automatico que actua primero y pregunta después. III) Si nuestras conductas son automáticas cuan responsable soy de mis acciones?. ¿Donde esta mi libre albedrio?.

IV) Que la tecnología actual: brain-scanning technology no esta lista como prueba fidedigna en el sistema legal. V) Que las neuronas en desarrollo son codificadas para congregarse en areas cerebrales especificas, especializadas en ciertas labores, con intercomunicacion simultanea local y entre los dos hemisferios. VI) Que el hi siempre intenta en forma continua, dar una explicación coherente a nuestra conciencia. El hi es el interprete que crea ilusiones e inserta motivos subconscientes. VII) Gazzaniga se pregunta si en el futuro nuestra responsabilidad será determinada por estudios de nuestros circuitos neurales. Sostiene ademas que los descubrimientos cerebrales tendran aplicacion en el sistema legal, mitigando las responsabilidades de ciertos crimenes o validando la veracidad de ciertos testimonios. Concluye Gazzaniga que al final, la responsabilidad (propiedad cerebral emergente), es un contrato entre dos personas, mas que una propiedad cerebral, que obedece a distintas leyes. Que la responsabilidad será redefinida y que mientras tanto sus implicancias deberan ser buscada en nuestros corazones, en las intuiciones morales humanas, en sus leyes y costumbres.
