Brave future (Part II).

World Transhumanist Association (WTA), founded in 1998 by the philosophers Nick Bostrom and David Pearce, is an international non-profit association that struggles to expand the human capacities, with the help of a technological ethics. Good if people are better than well, as long as the human development (from the evolutionary point of view) has not reached its endpoint. All the emergent technologies (neuropharmacology, artificial intelligence, cybernetics and nanotechnology), have the potential of improving the human abilities. Dr. Bostrom main spokesperson of WTA, says: I am not optimistic neither pessimistic, but there are clear risks for the humanity in this century. Some scenarios (with up to 20% of possibilities), can carry the human to their total extinction". "We believe that it is possible to modify our human capacities. For example, although adquired muscular features in the gym don't pass to the following generation, today with the technology, it is possible begins to transfer some acquired (by means of genetic engineering) features, to selected descendants."But in what moment (prenatal, postnatal, half life), we must intervene technologically?. There, ethics intervenes. Another case are current prósthesis for specific disabilities. In the future, it is expected that these devices will intervene in the process of aging slowing or reverting it. The stem cells will be used to repair lost organs. New enzymes that will eliminate noxious substances for the organism will appear. Posthuman is a human optimally improved. A superman? Not. "Nietzsche aspired to a moral and cultural transcendency giving in charge to some few people of great will and refinement that buried the conventional and traditional moral chains rising to the rest of the humanity". In the transhumanism, all will have access to emergent technologies ("sharp memoirs, better and healthy life”). A competent adult that decides what to make with their body. The Boys from Brazil, is one of Julian's Savulescu favorite movies (Professor of Ethics of the University of Oxford), whose flag is the biological potentiation of humans: a new eugenics, clearly. Good, what was science fiction in the film is now a reality. Do we return to Nazi eugenics?. It depends on what you understand for eugenics. We make eugenics when we make a screen for Down's Syndrome or other chromosomal anomalies. The difference is that here is favored freedom election and doesn't decrease it. "The human potentiation can be seen as the total range of things that we make nowadays: to be about having children but healthy, but intelligent, reproductive interventions., good schools, good nutrition." Do you accept to use genic therapy in order that your children have a good one to live? "Yes, in the sense that you give them good vitamins to make them but intelligent”...“in some point we will intervene genetically, in the same way that we intervene in their diet". As regards sports Saavulescu accept the potentiation in the form of ingestion of moderate quantities of hormones of growth or anabolic steroids. "Certainly, we decide what athletes' class we want to be". According to Savulescu, the controlled administration of these agents will improve the performance of the sports and will eliminate illegal procedures. Savulescu believes the big challenge will be other medical interventions to be prescribed in the future. "There you have Viagra, a potentiator that improve the sexual performances of old people". When the United Nations this year prohibited the clonation in all their forms, Savulescu protested journalistically, clarifying that it exist reproductive clonation (should be prohibited) and terapheutic clonation (the essential). He hope the UN will retire its ban because its decision condemned a lot of people to suffer and to die. In front of our problems (including a possible total human extinction in 100 years), we should elaborate an ethic that introduces uncertainty where we have established an unjustified certainty. The challenge is to concentrate on the real risks.

La World Transhumanist Association, fundada en 1998 por los filósofos Nick Bostrom y David Pearce, es una asociacion internacional sin fines de lucro que pugna por expandir las capacidades humanas, al amparo de una ética tecnológica. Que la gente esté mejor que bien, en tanto el desarrollo humano (desde el punto de vista evolutivo), no ha alcanzado su punto final. Todas las tecnologías emergentes (neurofarmacologia, inteligencia artificial, cibernética y nanotecnologia), tienen el potencial de mejorar las habilidades humanas. El Dr Bostrom vocero principal de la WTA, dice : "no soy optimista ni pesimista, hay riesgos claros para la humanidad en este siglo". Algunos escenarios (con hasta 20% de posibilidades), pueden llevar a la extincion humana total. "Creemos que es posible modificar nuestras capacidades humanas...por ejemplo, aunque los rasgos musculares adquiridos en el gimnasio no pasan a la siguiente generación -hoy con la tecnologia- empieza a ser posible transferir algunos de ellos (mediante ingeniería genética), a descendencias seleccionadas". ¿En que momento (prenatal, postnatal, vida media), intervenir tecnológicamente?. Ahí interviene la ética. Otro caso lo constituyen las prótesis artificiales, desinadas actualmente a discapacitados especificos. En el futuro, se espera que estas se acoplen a los procesos de envejecimiento , lentificándolo o revirtiendolo. Las células madre se emplearan para reparar tejidos perdidos. Apareceran nuevas enzimas que eliminaran sustancias nocivas para el organismo. Posthumano es un ser optimamente mejorado. ¿Un Superman?. No. "Nietzsche aspiraba a una trascendencia moral y cultural encargada a unas pocas personas de gran voluntad y refinamiento, encargadas de enterrar las cadenas convencionales y moral tradicional elevando al resto de la humanidad. En el transhumanismo, todos tienen acceso a las tecnologias ."memorias mas agudas, mejor y más saludable vida". Un adulto competente, que decide que hacer con su cuerpo. Los Niños de Brasil, es una de las películas favoritas de Julian Savulescu's, profesor de ética de la Universidad de Oxford, cuya bandera es la potenciacion biólogica humana : una nueva eugenesia, a todas luces. Lo que fue ciencia ficción en el film es ahora una realidad. Regresamos a la eugenesia nazi?... Depende de lo que usted entienda por eugenesia. Hacemos eugenesia cuando hacemos un screening del Síndrome de Down's u otras anomalias cromosómicas. La diferencia es que aquí se se favorece la libertad de elección ; no se la reduce..... "la potenciación humana puede ser vista como el rango total de cosas que hacemos hoy en dia : tratar de tener niños mas sanos, más inteligentes, intervenciones reproductivas, buenas escuelas, mas nutrición.¿Acepta Ud (Savulescu), usar terapia génica para asegurar que los niños tengan un buen vivir? "Si, en el sentido que les den buenas vitaminas para hacerlos mas inteligentes....en algun punto intervedremos genéticamente, del mismo modo que intervenimos en su dieta"...."En materia de deportes acepto la potenciación en forma de cantidades moderadas de hormonas de crecimiento o de esteroides anabólicos....nosotros decidimos que clase de atletas seremos". De acuerdo a Savulescu, la administración controlada de agentes que mejoran la performance optimizarán al deporte eliminando procedimientos ilegales. Savulescu cree el mas grande desafio seran otras intervenciones médicas futuristas "no para tratar, sino para potenciar nuestras vidas."..."ahí tienen al Viagra, un potenciador que mejoró las performances sexuales de personas viejas"... Cuando las Naciones Unidas este año prohibieron la clonación en todas sus formas, Savulescu protestó periodísticamente, aclarando que existia una clonación reproductiva (la que debiese ser prohibida) y otra : terapéutica (la esencial). Que la ONU deberia retractarse porque su decisión condenará a mucha gente a sufrir y morir. Frente a nuestros problemas (incluyendo una posible extinción umana total, dentro de 100 años), debemos elaborar una ética que introduzca incertidumbre donde tengamos establecida una injustificada certeza. El desafio es concentrarse en los riesgos reales
