Edward O. Wilson, Emerit Professor of Harvard has a goal: to create individual web pages for each of the 1,8 millions well-known creatures of the world.
-Spiegel: Will you be able to create scientific web pages for all animals, plants, mushrooms and microorganisms, in less than 10 years?
-Wilson: Of course, it is possible and necessary. It will be possible gathering the knowledge spread in the entire world (investigation papers, museums and others).
-Spiegel: And the financing?
-Wilson: We receive the help of 2 foundations. A key factor in this company is the scientific team of computation that builds swiftly the pages for “The Encyclopedia of the life."
-Spiegel: Are you sure to complete the task?
-Wilson: For it we need to know how many creatures exist. Perhaps 10 millions are a realist calculate. Countless types die before we see them. The "Encyclopedia of the life", will give the scientists the necessary tools to explore diverse world environments with alone some clicks, accelerating the discovery and description of new types. -Spiegel: Have not the types more interesting been discovered but enough time ago?
-Wilson: Alone we know a fraction of the entirety of the species. You don’t have idea of the influence that each bacteria, each mushroom has on their environment in an unique way. If we don't know how the ecosystems work, how we will solve our environmental problems?

-Wilson: Por supuesto que es posible y necesario. Basta con recolectar el conocimiento esparcido en todo el mundo (papers de investigación, museos y otros).
-Spiegel: Y, el financiamiento?
-Wilson: Recibimos la ayuda de 2 fundaciones. Un factor clave en esta empresa es el equipo científico de computación que construye velozmente las páginas de la "Enciclopedia de la vida."
-Spiegel: Podrá ser completada?
-Wilson: Para ello necesitamos saber cuantas criaturas existen. Tal vez 10 millones sean un cálculo realista. Innumerables tipos mueren antes que los veamos. La "Enciclopedia de la vida”, dará a los cientificos las herramientas necesarias para explorar medios ambientes mundiales con solo unos cuantos clicks, acelerando el descubrimiento y la descripcion de nuevos tipos. Uno de los objetivos es que este tipo de información no solo sea escrita en journals especializados, sino también en la “Enciclopedia de la vida”. Eso es una revolución.
-Spiegel: No han sido descubiertos los tipos mas interesantes hace ya bastante tiempo?
-Wilson: Solo conocemos una fracción de la totalidad de las especies. No tiene idea de la influencia que sobre su medio ambiente ejerce cada bacteria, cada hongo, de modo unico. Si no sabemos como funcionan los ecosistemas ¿como resolveremos nuestros problemas ambientales?
