SMOS-ESA WATER MISSION

The ESA Mission SMOS (Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity), constituted by a big and a smaller secondary satellite: Proba-2, will be thrown in November 2009, with the purpose of 1) Study the humidity of big surface masses of the earth and criósphere, hoping to build maps of humidity every 3 days that will improve our understanding of the cycle of the water and our forecast of weather and climates: useful in agriculture and in the handling of water resources and 2) Study the salinity of the oceans building maps every 30 days that will improve our understanding of the sea circulation patterns. The salinity and the temperature determine the density of sea water, important factor in oceanic currents, as long as the transport of heat of equator to poles moderates the climate.

The Mission will study the oceanic salinity from the space, with : Microwave Imaging Radiometer using Aperture Synthesis (MIRAS) with helps of new 2-D radiometer-interferómeter and a lysímeter that will measure the evapotranspiratión of the soil and vegetation.
MISION ESA: AGUA-MSOS
