THE FACE OF PENTAWER
A rational explanation attempts to explain the curse of certain Egyptian mummies like Pentawer mummy of Thebes, (unembalmed in 1886), contained in an unmarked box, undecorated, without names, with dirty clothes, incompletely dehydrated and with resin in the mouth instead of cranial cavity, forcing said Gaston Maspero, who Pentawer was a prince, son of Ramses III, that having rebelled against his father was discovered and sentenced to death. A mummy with a painful face and distorted suffering expression that according to some express extreme fear associated to death shrouded in punitive torture, now better explained by poor technique of embalming and gravity. Not only Egyptian mummies, also Andean and jungle mummies of Peru (with imploring hands) and European Medieval (monk of capuchin Crypt in Palermo, with wide eyes), exhibit the same fear.
The rationale link these findings to rigor mortis caused by a chemical change that induced muscle stiffness in limbs and difficulty to manipulate the body, with persistence of ATP, which occurs at room temperature 1 to 2 hours after death with the aim of fix long facial muscles, disappearing 24 to 48 hours later, when muscles relax and body becomes soft by ATP depletion and cessation of metabolism. Proving that the dead man's weeping is caused by the force of gravity acting on muscles. Muscles of upper jaw does not change its position, being the first to stiffen. Upon cessation of rigor mortis, muscles relax and the dead seem to yawn showing bared teeth, a defect that current embalmers put aside keeping the jaw in place by invisible threads that connect the nose to the bone or, using a handkerchief tied around the mandible.
