BANNING SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION

The U.S. National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB), sent requests to Science and Nature in order not to publish sensitive details of viral research (mutations that could generate lethal viral pandemics), related to the emergence of new avian flu virus strains : I) According to the American government bioterrorists could use mutated viral strains as lethal weapons. Currently, several virologists are working with mutated viral strains of higher transmissibility from person to person. According to the NSABB, only bona fide researchers would have access to this vital information. II) Other researchers argue that such position is impractical, because it ignores the importance of sharing information with other experts (accelerates the progress of knowledge) and it will lead to information theft. John Wood (UK's National Institute for Biological Standards and Control), said that this approach will impede the progress and control of viral diseases and it will mean a delay for a vaccine able to counteract mutations of flu virus. Finally, mutations are nothing new for anyone with a minimal knowledge of avian influenza virus.

Actualmente varios virólogos trabajan con cepas virales mutadas de mayor trasmisibilidad de persona a persona. Según el NSABB, solo investigadores de buena fé tendrían acceso a esta información vital. II) Otros investigadores opinan que se trata de una posición impráctica, porque desconoce la importancia de compartir la información con otros expertos (acelera el avance del conocimiento) y porque dará lugar al robo de información. John Wood (UK's National Institute for Biological Standards and Control), asegura que esta actitud impedirá el progreso y control de las enfermedades virales y significará un atraso para fabricar una vacuna mutante capaz de contrarrestar las mutaciones propias del virus de la gripe. Finalmente, las mutaciones no son nada nuevo para quien tenga un mínimo conocimiento del virus de la influenza aviaria.
