HUMAN SILICON NEUROTRANSMITTERS

http://bigthink.com/ideas/41154 al (Harvard-MIT Division of Health Sciences and Technology), have designed silicon chips (analog very-large-scale integration, VLSI), to mimic the way neurons intercommunicate among them, carry out memory and learning processes, adapt to new information (plasticity), and so on. A method that could be used to create artificial retinas and know how the brain works. With 400 transistors, the chip mimics the activity of a single brain synapses and how neurotransmitters are released, the function of dependent ion channels that control the flow of charged atoms (Na, K, Ca), keys to perform: long term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), that reinforce and weaken synapses. Most chips operate in binary mode on/off, with current flows through transistors in analog mode. According to the researchers it is possible alter circuit parameters to suit specific ion channels.

In the future the researchers will try to integrate to the chips, concepts such as complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS), visual processing systems faster than those in today's computers. Also building chips interface with many biological systems, artificial intelligence blocks, knowing how LTD occurs, intimate mechanisms of ion channel receptors and postsynaptic NMDA activation. It is important for researchers to know if there is a second type of receptors: : endo-cannabinoids, similar in structure to marijuana produced in the brain and involved in several functions: appetite, pain, memory, etc.. To know if NMDA receptors are activated at the same time than LTD. When the new chips include the model of endo-cannabinoid receptors, it is sensed that we will able to simulate LTD and LTP processes.
