Transgenic and Peruvian children.

In the last days the holders of various Peruvian newspapers come with critics and censorship of certain institutions against the execution of the biomedical investigation: …" Efficacy of a rice-based ORS (oral rehydration salts), containing human lactoferrin and lisozyme in peruvian children with acute diarrhea", conducted by Nelly Zavaleta MD (Institute Specialized of Health of Children-IESN-), Institute of Nutritious Investigation (IIN) and financed by Ventria Bioscience of USA. Aprodeh (Association For Human Rights) accuses the minister of Health Pilar http://www.larepublica.com.pe/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=116427&Itemid=32&fecha_edicion=2006-07-14 Mazzetti and to the Directors of the hospitals Belen of Trujillo and IESN of Lima of to have violated ethics norms, permitting and authorizing studies with consent signed, but without adequate comprehension of their effects on the part of the parents of the children less than 5 years submitted to the study. By her side, envirommentalists based on Peru: Association of Latin American free of Transgenics, maintain that Ventria operates in Peru and Asia because cannot do it in USA, where it is excluded for fear to that the genes of their transgenics contaminate to not genetically modified vegetables.

The matter is that 140 children among 5-33 months, divided into 3 groups received a) solution of glucose + high content in Na (sodium) b) solution of not genetically modified rice + high content in Na and c) solution of rice not transgenic + lisozime (antibacterial, antiviral) and lactoferrin (blocks utilization of iron by bacteria), purified, originated in genetically modified rice. A genetically modified product or transgenic (case of the rice), possesses genes of other vegetables or animals inserted artificially in its genome, to aim to produce specific proteins to will. The results of the study showed that the solution c, shortened the number of days with diarrhea (from 5.21 to 3.67 days), accelerated the solidification of the feces (from 69,2% to 85, 2%, in 48 hours) and reduced the recurrence of diarrheas from 18,5% to, 8,5%., in 48 hours. The oral solution, has received the approval of the FDA, the GRAS, the Pediatric Academy Sciences, the International Academy of Life Sciences American and the Colegio Médico del Perú.

Our opinion is that the emergency of these fortified products are indetenible and eventually has more benefits, than disadvantages caused with their implementation. Saving the distances here we employ iodine salts and bread fortified with iron since many years ago, by obvious reasons. It does little the British business Syngenta, produced http://ec.europa.eu/research/agriculture/project_showcase/yellow_rice.html golden rice (fortified with betacaroten: Vitamin A). Certainly some genetically modified products (factor of similar growth to insulin, instigators of allergies, etc), must be scrupulously studied, but other not so much, because the genetic transfer occurs in spontaneous form since the start of the humanity. Vegetable, animal and Homo sapiens are submitted to vertical genetic exchanges (by sexual way) and to horizontal genetic exchanges (by virus, etc), routinely. Certainly in the course of the history, we have gone eliminating by natural selection, to the damaging genes. The insertion of genes of lactoferrin and lisozyme in our humanity, is then similar to horizontal genetic exchange. Besides in this case the solution of rice was not genetically modified and the lactoferrin and lisozyme aggregate, besides being harmless and beneficial for our health, were purified products (lacking of genes). Here there is also a matter of cost/ risk/benefit, because the acute diarrheas are the death cause second in Peru and each/year 36 000 children, are attacked for acute diarrhea, of which 8,000 they die. We incline for placing this new product of value tested, inside the therapeutic alternatives, encumbering it with 2 things: 1) to place them a label that indicate that is a matter of a lacking product of genes, in which in some moment intervened a genetically modified rice and 2) to improve and to watch that the informed consents http://www.elcomercioperu.com.pe/EdicionImpresa/Html/2006-07-15/impVidayFuturo0540975.html reported be adapted to ethical rules and national and international procedures.
