SMALLEST FROG OF THE WORLD

Biologists are fascinated with the discovery of a new species of Noblella: Pygmaea noblella by Edgar Lehr (Dresden/Germany) and Alessandro Catenazzi (Berkeley/USA), in the upper valley Cosñipata (3025-3190 m), in Southern Peru (Cusco). The new species measured 11.4 mm (snout-cloaca): an average adult, one of the world's smallest frogs. Call attention its large fingers and fast step into adulthood. Its density is 30 to 75 individuals/ha, inhabiting high cloud forests puna). It has a remarkably long finger. Los biólogos han quedado fascinados con el descubrimiento de una nueva especie de Noblella : Noblella pygmaea por Edgar Lehr (Dresden/Alemania) y Alessandro Catenazzi (Berkeley/USA), en la parte alta del Valle Cosñipata (3025-3190 msnm), en el sur de Perú (Cusco). La nueva especie mide 11,4 mm (hocico–cloaca): en promedio en adultos, siendo uno de los anuros más pequeños del mundo. Llaman la atención sus grandes dedos y su veloz paso a la vida adulta. Su densidad es de 30 y 75 individuos/ha, habitando matorrales y bosques nublados altoandinos (puna). It has a remarkably long finger. En 1960 el francés Jean Vellard, describió una relación inversa entre tamaño de anuros y altitud: a mayor altura menor tamaño, que atribuyó a los efectos de la hipoxia.
