HUMAN CORD SPINAL INJURIES TO BE CURED

The company Geron, based in California (200 million dollars in assets), has begun the countdown for a breaktrough medical experiment. In the coming months, 10 volunteers suffering from cord spinal injuries, will try to reverse their paralysis by injection of glial cells (2 million cells) in their spinal cords. If the treatment works, the affected portions of the spinal cords will begin to produce myelin, necessary to transmit nerve signals and allow normal ambulation of patients. According to Hans Keirstead, main scientist of the experiment, rats with fewer than 15 days of injury to the spinal cord completely reverted the paralysis. In rats that have over 1 year, the improvement is partial, because scarring prevented a total functional reversal. There are additional obstacles: generation of tumors, immune rejection, failure for unknown reasons, and so on.
