NAZCA CULTURE AND HUARANGOS

Everything indicates that the lack of ecological knowledge coupled with the satisfaction of their basic needs, forced the nasquenses to cut their huarango trees (algarrobos, Prosopis pallida), lying on his desert coastal habitats to plant new crops (maize, squash, sweet potato, etc), not foreseeing that this way erected their misfortune. At least that is what sustains David Beresford-Jones, an anthropologist of Cambridge University, after analyzing excavations in the lower valley of Ica-Nazca where clear evidence exist of cutting of large numbers of huarangos.

Aided by computer programs, Beresford-Jones argues that around 500 BC this cutting facilitated floods destructions, changed the nasquense landscape exposed so to strong winds, hampered the agriculture, destroying underground irrigation systems, making scarce resources in the lower Ica Valley. The nasquenses ignored huarangos properties, its gigantic proportions (trunk: 18 m in height and 2 m in diameter), acting as windbreaks preventing floods, roots that penetrate 50 meters into the groundwater absorbing water preventing the destruction of land fertility and moisture favoring decreasing aridity, drought tolerance and use of semisalad waters. To make matters better, huarangos, fix nitrogen, providing food, fodder and energy.

LA CULTURA NAZCA Y LOS HUARANGOS

Todo indica que la falta de conocimientos ecológicos aunada a la satisfacción de sus necesidades vitales, obligó a los nasquenses a talar gigantescos huarangos (algarrobos, Prosopis pallida), yacentes en sus desérticos hábitats costeros a fin de sembrar nuevas cosechas (maíz, calabazas, camote,etc), no previendo que al hacerlo erigían su desgracia. Al menos eso es lo que sostiene David Beresford-Jones, antropólogo de la Universidad de Cambridge, trás analizar excavaciones realizadas en la parte baja del valle de Ica-Nazca donde encontró claras evidencias de tala de grandes cantidades de árboles de huarango.

Ayudado por programas de computadora, Beresford-Jones arguye que alrededor del año 500 a.C. la tala facilitó inundaciones, expuso el paisaje nasquense a fuertes vientos, obstaculizó la agricultura, destruyendo sus sistemas de irrigación subterráneos, tornando escasos los recursos en la parte baja del valle de Ica. Ignoraban los nasquenses que los huarangos a causa de sus gigantescas proporciones (tronco :18 m de altura y 2 m de diámetro), actuaban como cortavientos impidiendo inundaciones, que disponian de raíces que penetrando 50 metros en las capas freáticas de la tierra sorbian agua en sus raíces impidiendo la destrucción de la tierra favoreciendo la fertilidad y humedad disminuyendo la aridéz, promoviendo tolerancia a sequías y aguas semisaladas. Por si fuera poco los huarangos, fijan nitrógeno, aportando alimentos, forraje y energía.
