RESTORED VISION

As it is reported in The Lancet, 12 people affected of congenital amaurosis of Leber (blindness for faulty function of the gene RPE65), improved its vision when the affected eye was treated with reparative genes carried to its subretina by means of adenovirus. This illness causes visual deterioration in youth and total blindness among 30-40 years. The authors of the study Albert M Maguire and Katherine A High (University of Pennsylvania), treated 12 patients (phase 1 trial), showing great improvement those that were among 8-11 years (detected obstacles and were mobilized without asistance). One child of 8 years old achieved a return of the vision almost at normal level, showing that success depended on the biggest or smaller degeneration of the retina, at the moment of treatment. According to some specialists if both eyes were treated, the result would be better. A victory of genetic engineering.

Según reporta Lancet, 12 personas afectas de amaurosis congénita de Leber (ceguera por funcionamiento defectuoso del gene RPE65), mejoraron su visión cuando el ojo mas afectado fue tratado con genes trasportados a su subretina mediante adenovirus. Esta enfermedad causa deterioro visual en la juventud y ceguera total entre los 30-40 años. Los autores del estudio Albert M Maguire y Katherine A High (University of Pennsylvania), trataron 12 pacientes, mostrando gran mejoria los que tenían entre 8-11 años (detectaron obstaculos y se movilizaron sin asistencia). Un niño de 8 años logró una mejoria de su visión casi al nivel normal, mostrando que el éxito dependía de la mayor o menor degeneración de la retina, al momento del tratamiento. Según algunos especialistas si se trataran ambos ojos, el resultado seria mejor. Un triunfo de la ingeniería genetica.
