Those over 65 who hold a gait speed of 1 m/sec or more, have longer survival than those with lower gait speed (0, 5 m/sec). The average speed for 34.485 healthy older adults aged 65 years was 0.8 m per second. The gait speed thus becomes a reliable marker of geriatric general health and longevity for over 65 years, being as important as blood pressure, body mass index, etc, being also useful in cancer screening, cardiac surgery and intensive treatment. According to Stephanie Studenski (University of Pittsburgh), who led the study, the gait speed is adopted by the body's own self (circulatory, respiratory, skeletal, muscular and nervous system).A decrease walking speed urges cancer research and/or determine which body organs is failing. Appropriate gait speed lowers blood pressure, maintains a healthy weight, improves mood, keeps memory and decreases the risk of cancer.


Los mayores de 65 años que mantienen una velocidad de marcha de 1 m/segundo o más, tienen supervivencias más largas que aquellos con velocidades de marcha menores a 0, 5 m/segundo. La media de velocidad de marcha para 34,485 adultos mayores saludables de 65 años fue 0.8 m por segundo. La velocidad de marcha se convierte así en un marcador gerontológico confiable de salud general y longevidad para mayores de 65 años, con tanta importancia como la presión arterial, el índice de masa corporal, etc, siendo herramienta útil en el tamizaje del cáncer, cirugías cardiacas y tratamientos intensivos. Según Stephanie Studenski (University of Pittsburgh), líder del estudio, la velocidad de marcha es adoptada por autoselección del propio organismo (sistemas circulatorio, respiratorio, esquelético, muscular y sistema nervioso).Una velocidad de marcha disminuída urge investigar cáncer y/o que sistemas corporales están fallando. Una velocidad de marcha adecuada, disminuye la presión arterial, mantiene un peso adecuado, mejora el humor, mantiene la memoria y disminuye el riesgo de cáncer.
