FAKE IN RESEARCH

The issue of distorting scientific data in order to stay in the elite of world scientific production is not new. Recall the case of the South Korean Woo Suk Hwang, who falsely claimed to have cloned human embryo. The issue here will always be a poor oversight of investigations before, during and after. One must not trust anyone. Silvia Bulfone-Paus (46), an Italian immunologist who studied medicine in Turin (1989), Genetics at Yale and is currently Managing Director of the Research Centre Borstel, Lubeck is directly or indirectly accused of manipulating images of western blots of unrelated experiments in order to endorse her findings on cellular signals involved in allergic reactions such as asthma. Computer images copied, sometimes enlarged, with new titles, with differences in contrast white/black by digital methods in at least 6 papers published in EMBO Journal, the Journal of Immunology, the Journal of Leukocyte Biology and the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Bulfone-Paus deny the facts pointing to guilt to 2 of his former aides : Elena Bulanova and Vadim Budagian. While investigations are conducted Bulfone-Paus is defended by Karl Ulrich Mayer, President of Leibniz Association who argued that there is no falsification of data, only of the forms. If Bulfone-Paus is found guilty she could be forced to pay back the grants.

INVESTIGACIONES FRAUDULENTAS

El tema de falsear datos científicos a fin de mantenerse en la élite de la producción científica mundial, no es nuevo. Recuérdese el caso del surcoreano Woo Suk Hwang, que alegaba falsamente haber clonado embriones humanos. El tema aquí siempre será una deficiente supervisión de las investigaciones antes- durante y después. No se puede (no se debe), confiar en nadie. Silvia Bulfone-Paus (46 años), inmunóloga italiana que estudió Medicina en Turín (1989), Genética en Yale y que actualmente es Managing Director del Research Centre Borstel-Lubeck es acusada directa o indirectamente de manipular imágenes western blots de experimentos no relacionados a fin de refrendar sus hallazgos sobre señales celulares comprometidas en reacciones alérgicas como el asma. Imágenes copiadas de computadoras, a veces ensanchadas, con nuevos títulos, con diferencias en los contrastes blanco/negro por métodos digitales en por lo menos 6 papers publicados en EMBO Journal, el Journal of Immunology, el Journal of Leukocyte Biology y el Journal of Biological Chemistry. Bulfone-Paus niega los hechos señalando como culpables a 2 de sus ex colaboradores de ascendencia rusa : Elena Bulanova y Vadim Budagian. Mientras se realizan las investigaciones Bulfone-Paus es defendida por Karl Ulrich Mayer, President of Leibniz Association quien arguye que no existe falsificación de los datos, solo de las formas. Si se comprobara su culpabilidad, Bulfone Paus podría ser obligada a devolver el dinero de los grants.
