techno-scientific breaktrough of the year 2012

Two events: one, technological and the other linked to basic science deserve our rating of 2012 breaktrough of the year: I) After a space travel of 566 million kilometers performed in nine months, a rolling robot landed on Mars :Curiosity, immediately sent images of the Martian surface to Earth. Although NASA expects that during the two years of its mission, Curiosity will check the study area (Mount Sharp and vicinity), to watch if environmental conditions were favorable in the past for microbial life, for us the most important aspect is its extreme sophistication, improvement and consolidation of robots as vital and advanced instrument for future terraforming of interestellar planets prior to establishing in them human colonies.

2) As for the other: the removal of millions of T cells to a 7 year old girl affected by acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), admitted to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, to insert new genes into them enabling them to kill her leukemic cells, signal trends of futuristic medicine: custom mode (employment of modified cells from the patient without rejection), and natural : genetic and immune processes to kill cancer cells are generated to small-scale cell by the body itself, basic elements of a natural medicine, defended ad nauseum by us, previously. The ineffectiveness of these l natural cell changes are due to their small scale production. Here, cancer occurs because T cells (component of our normal immunity), lose their ability to kill cancer cells. In this case, the genes were transported to T cells, by modified HIV lentiviral vectors. After growth by culturing, modified T cells, were reinfused to the body of the girl, obtaining levels 1000 times higher than initial level, generating a delayed development of tumor lysis syndrome (side effect of therapy) and finally the complete remission of ALL.
