Until recently, the results of reading comprehension and mathematics were not favorable for the average North-American students. Conversely, disciplined Chinese and Indian students controlled and guided by tiger mothers, almost always occupied the top spots. Are American students lazy?. No, definitely. My personal point of view about it is that north-american students for years have been quietly questioning the traditional teaching of most of their high school settled -with a few exceptions- in memory and repetition. In other words, their low grades in international contests were a reflection of a rejection to their traditional teaching systems. However the students themselves were quietly designing more creative teaching methods, using technology to which they are addicted. Therefore, I beg you dear reader to watch this TED video, in which the computer scientist Salman Khan creator of a technology-interactive- creative teaching received a long standing ovation at the end of his speech. Khan has developed over 2000 free online videos to teach mathematics to children and adults. Videos, with full carefully structured educational curriculums in several areas, showing the power of interactive exercises to be developed at home or in the same classroom with the teacher's help. Khan Academy, has changed the paradigm from memorize and repeat to questioning and experimenting with what students are concentrated in the most creative: thinking. No, definitivamente.

NEW TRENDS IN SCIENTIFIC PAPERS

According to reports from the Royal Society (1993-2003/2004-2008), China, India, Brazil, Turkey, Iran, Tunisia, South Korea and others have increased the number of their scientific publications worldwide. In terms of peer-reviewed articles, China ranks second, threatening to displace the first place to USA on 2013. While Americans continue to produce most cited articles, the number of American publications has fallen from 26 to 21%, while China rose from 4.4 to 10.2% (2008). According to Chris Llewellyn Smith (Oxford University/Royal Society study), Iran raised the number of their articles from 736 (1996) to 13.238 (2008), regardless of their difficult political relations with USA, since the number of collaborative work between American and Iraqi are 1831 (2004-2008). Turkey quadrupled its publications between 1996 and 2008. India and Brazil, continue increasing the number of scientific publications. Tunisia has gone from having 0 Funds in Research and Development (R&D), to 0.7% of gross domestic product (GDP). China investigates hard in nanotechnology, physics, biology and physics, while Brazil does in biology and agriculture. In general, global investment in R&D have risen from $ 790 to $ 1.145 billion (2002-2007), while the number of researchers rose from 5.7 to 7.1 million. At the moment the only way to measure the quality of scientific articles are the number of citations of the same by other scientists after their publications, area where United States continues to dominate. According to Llewellyn Smith, global issues as climate change, potential pandemics, biodiversity, food, water and energy security, need global approaches given their interdependence and interrelation.

ARTIFICIAL LEAF

Daniel Nocera (MIT/Mass.) and collaborators have created an artificial hand (leaf), able to generate cheap energy that just needs only 1 gallon of water and sunlight to power individual homes of people in developing countries. The model copies the natural process of plants to produce energy and grow using sunlight, water and CO2 (photosynthesis). The artificial hand like a natural leaf uses low energy to split water into hydrogen and oxygen and store energy. Placed in a gallon of water in a bright sunlight, the artificial hand produce enough electricity. The hydrogen and oxygen gases would be stored in a fuel cell, located either on top of the house or beside it. The artificial hand -the size of a poker card- made of silica, has electrical systems and catalytic converters (nickel and cobalt). 10 years ago, John Turner created an artificial leaf that used platinum as catalyst, a model abandoned because was expensive and because its useful life last less than 24 hours. The Nocera new model is more stable, lasts 2 days and is 10 times more effective than a natural leaf for photosynthesis. From: American Chemical Society (2011, March 28). Debut of the first practical 'artificial leaf'.

BRAIN AND BIOLOGIC NETWORKS

Study of brain function has advanced greatly, but not enough to understand it holistically. Since early neuronal staining and descriptions made by Ramon y Cajal to current functional brain studies and multicolor fluorescent staining of neurons and dendrites much water has flowed under the bridge. By the way, during these days of heat weather in Miami, some huge trees devoid of their leaves and fruits, brought in my consciousness the huge similarity between the arrangement of the branches of a tree and the sequential divisions of neuronal dendrites. Let's see: I) Both, neuronal dendrites and main divisions and subdivisions of a tree divide (dichotomize) of 2 to 2. II) After this, the following branch divisions of a tree are always initiated near the post-dichotomy area and then near a pre-dichotomy area trying to balance the maintenance of the global rise of divisions or its horizontal extension. III) The final overall shape of all the branches of a tree and neural ramifications, is the formation of a 3-D sphere. IV) For some functional reason the neural divisions end in the cerebral cortex, while those of a tree look for areas of maximum exposure to sunlight. This 3-D conformation seems to be the best for neuron-neuron connections with maximum efficiency. It is possible that this conformation allows computation of quantum type. V) What remains to be clarified is why dendrite-dendrites connections use recyclable chemical neurotransmitters instead of photons or electrons. It is possible that electrons and photons permit disadvantage neuronal connections (brain overheating, etc). On the other hand, perhaps this chemical connections permit stops to allow or cease the flow of information more effectively. Perhaps the neurological body and brain information must follow simplified morse-type patterns.

EXOTIC SPHERES

In 1956, John Milnor found a 7-dimensional mathematical object (7-D), identical to a sphere of 7-D, under the rules of topology (shapes with mathematical properties unchanged by stretching or torsion), though different in structure (exotic spheres). It was the first time in which was identified a way to share topological properties, but not differentiable structures of their smaller dimensional counterparts. Although it is difficult to imagine how form will have such a sphere, it is possible to form larger dimensional spheres through ways other than the usual two-dimensional.

Split a sphere into 2 halves at its middle, so that each half has a copy of each point of its Ecuador. Then, assemble the 2 halves so that one point in its southern part is not in line with another of its northern counterpart. At 2-D scale, there is only one way to do that: twisting the sphere. At 7-D, the points are mixed together in multiple ways (up to 28 exotic spheres, and more at 7-D). Until recently topologists knew that inflating a cube this could be turned into a sphere (2 topologically identical shapes). At 3-D or less, the sphere and the cube have the same differentiable Justificar a ambos ladosstructures and topological form. However, you can not turn a sphere into a doughnut without drilling holes. Although topologically different high dimensional spheres areas can be built making them smoothed differentiated. It is sensed that the human brain has very small exotic topological forms. Pioneering studies in topology, geometry and algebra that have earned John Milnor (Stony Brook University, NY), to receive the Abel Prize for Mathematics 2011, from the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters.

ESFERAS EXOTICAS

HIDDEN UNIVERSE

An acquaintance of ours, the theoretical physicist Brian Greene has just published his book The Hidden Universe, which emphasizes the possible existence of multiverses, generated from multiple Big Bangs full of energy before exploding. Greene based his hypothesis on 2 reasons: a) In mathematics b) In factual facts shown by quantum mechanics whose classic example is the demonstration of the existence of the position of a moving electron in some places, only in probabilistic terms, arguing that this particle would have to say a 60% chance of being in a certain place and a 40% of being in another, at the same time. That a human makes the decision to place the electron in the area marked as 60%, does not negate its existence in the remainder, which depends somewhat on our choice, on our decision. An important step in the consolidation of this theory would be to prove the existence of a moderate amount of high speed post-collisions graviton particles in the Large Hadron Collider, since such existence would show loss energy of a parallel universe to ours, the same that could be located just mm away from ours. Parallel universes may have or not organic life similar to ours, be empty and have elementary particles different from those identified in our universe. Each universe starts expanding like a bubble until it bursts, hence to contract and condense at a point (singularity), Greene says that exist the possibility of collisions of these bubbles.

MULTIVERSOS

ORIGIN OF LIFE

From: Primordial synthesis of amines and amino acids in a 1958 Miller H2S-rich spark discharge experiment. Print March 21, 2011, doi: 10.1073/pnas.1019191108 PNAS March 21, 2011.
As everyone knows, the russian Oparin was the first to try to create organic life in the laboratory. Greater sophistication in such kind of experiments would be tried by Stanley Miller in 1953, recreating primordial terraqueous atmospheres and oceans enclosed in lab glass flasks containing gaseous mixtures of methane, hydrogen, water vapor and ammonia to which finally were applied electrical currents emulating artificial storms and chemical reactions that occur in a primordial organic soup. According to Miller, if life was generated by such kind of mix, the problem of the origin of life would be solved. It means that potential to generate spatial life would exist everywhere, especially on planets similar to ours. Miller does not continued his experiments because their generated many doubts. Today, Jeffrey Bada (Scripps Institution of Oceanography/UC San Diego), a disciple of Miller, continues to conduct the same experiments with slight variations. Bada along with researchers from Mexico and USA, analyzed the same samples that Miller employed, using High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and time-of-flight mass spectrometry, identifying 22 amino acids, 5 amines and 7 sulfur compounds. These results have allowed Bada suggest that the first amino acids were formed in active volcanic islets, when they were covered by more water.

SUPERCAPACITORS

Huigang Zhang, Xindi Yu, Paul V. Braun (Materials Research Laboratory, and Beckman Institute, University of Illinois), have developed supercapacitors (device for storing electric charges), ultrafast, able to charge laptops in minutes and cell phones in seconds with the potential to be used in medical and military devices and also in electric vehicles. A storage technology that combines the performance of supercapacitors with the energy density of batteries. Until recently, ultra-fast loading and unloading caused dramatic reductions in the stored or delivered energy. The researchers were able to perform large uploads and downloads with minimal loss of capacity, using cathodes made of self-assembled three-dimensional bicontinuous nanoarchitectures composed of electrolytically active material sandwiched between the ways of transport of active ions and electrons. At temperatures of 400C and 1,000 C, lithium ion and nickel metal hydride batteries allow the production of lithium-ion battery capable of being loaded in 2 minutes.

THE COMING TV

According to Technology Review (MIT/February/2011), the fusion of internet content and commercial TV, developed some years ago by geeks and engineers from Silicon Valley, has been consolidated with the emergence of Google TV. Google decided to intervene actively in this area for fear of losing online leadership, by the billionaire income to be produced by the per view system, the commercial ad, the conquest of emerging markets and the growing shortage of clients addicted to cable. 1) The apparent inconsistency between a free and open web and a private and a billion dollar commercial TV in revenues has been solved by keeping the ad and the pay per view system, as well as adapting to commercial television formats, many programs online. The incorporation of YouTube is one of the strengths of this union. It is expected that many DVD orders will be established on demand to lower good prices. 2) It has created a giant screen with multiple content to choose from and a wireless keyboard 3) Since millions of TV channels will be offered to the public and special emphasis is given to tables of contents. 4) TV is expected to improve in content and be shared among friends and distant relatives. Many of the above processes will be favored by the existence of broadband in many homes. 5) It is expected in the near future, having a personal TV that will recognize the voice and tastes of each client.

A DRUG CALLED URINE

Caused a stir in 1978, to know that the sitting prime minister of India Morani Desai, drank a daily serving of his own urine for health purposes. By then, what the public not knew was that sterile urine of a healthy man, contained bodily waste products as well as remaining antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, hormones, etc. 1) So, the Roman Pliny and Ambroise Paré recommended the ingestion of fresh urine to heal burn, injuries, nicks, etc. 2) Robert Boyle recommended drink fresh urine to combat sore throat. 3) In France (1671), the chemical Matte Faveur collected the urine of children to produce volatile salts. 4) The soldiers of the First World War used anti-gas masks soaked with their own urine (urine ammonia counteracts chloride gas). 5) According to Richard Sugg (The Guardian/20/March/2011), Gerardine Botte, professor of chemistry (Ohio University), currently used urine to generate hydrogen fuel.

MORE NEWBORN MEN THAN WOMEN

According to a study led by Therese Hesketh, Li Lu, and Zhu Wei Xing and published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal (March 14, 2011 CMAJ 10.1503/cmaj.101368), in certain cities of India and China the sex ratio of newborns has changed to an overall average of 119 boys for every 100 women in China and 113 to 100 in India. However, in certain Indian and Chinese cities, the sex ratio is higher. According to the study, through the assistance of ultrasound many female fetuses are aborted because while some women need a respectable dowry to marry and earn little, men earn more, perpetuate the family name and keep elderly close relatives. In China where there is a police : one family-one child is more cost effective to have a son. The study predicts that within 20 years the sex ratio at birth will be even higher in China and India, always favoring boys, which could encourage crime. However there are overtones of change in certain farmer Chinese cities : if the first newborn is woman, then it is allowed to have a second child.

EARTHQUAKES and TSUNAMIS

Abstract from several notes from NYTimes.
The slippage of a large submarine tectonic rock plate (North American plate/Overriding plate), over other below it (Pacific tectonic plate/100 km long/mobilization: 4-5 cm per year/Subduction plate), generates stress, tectonic uplift and release of marine energy inducing violent sea waves (tsunami), as produced on March 11 off the coast of northern Japan (Earthquake, magnitude: 8.9), with expansion of sea waves to the Pacific Ocean, Australia, North and South America, killing 10,000 people (among dead and missing). The waves that hit the coast of Japan were 7 feet tall. The global effects of this tsunami are explainable according to Greg Valentine (University of Buffalo's Center for Studies GeoHazards), by the sudden movement of 2 plates moving large volumes of water, whose speed depends on the depth of the ocean epicenter of the earthquake. As masses of water close to shore, frontwaves decrease their speed producing advanced piling up of water, which can reach up to 20 m high, flooding everything that falls below this level. According to Valentine the numerous aftershocks perceived in Japan after the main earthquake, are due to the fact that subduction zone has many miles in length. Despite extensive preventive preparation of Japan to counter earthquakes and tsunamis, the reality is that -at least for tsunamis-: 1) Certain natural barriers: coral reefs, mangrove plantations, trees and coastal vegetation remain effective in their containment wave task. Perhaps it is time that Japan plant cement network piles in high risk coastal areas. 2) Other support comes from some mental preparation adapted to follow established protocols: to be hidden in specific locations as indicated above, sufficient supplies of food and medicine, energy reserves, plans to reunite families separated by disaster, etc. As those who know say although it is possible to prevent everything, it is difficult to put proper attention to preventive measures before the occurrence of a natural phenomena.

TERREMOTOS y TSUNAMIS

THE ORIGINS OF THE POLITICAL ORDER

Abstract from NYTimes (March,7,2011): From ‘End of History’ Author, a Look at the Beginning and Middle.
There is eagerness to read the book written by Francis Fukuyama (Stanford University): "The origins of the political order", about which the NYTimes has advanced a summary: I) The universal human social nature built from the outset certain behaviors that favored family; a reciprocal altruism, some kind of rules and a propensity for militarism II) Therefore, human politics tied to its biological substrate is subjected to certain recurring patterns of political behavior from prehistoric times to the French Revolution. Events that until recently were confined to a single causal explanation: economics, war and geography, should be confined according to Fukuyama to more factors: war, religion and human behavior that favors close relatives. III) An evolutionary political development path from hunter-gatherers to tribal conglomerates favored by religious ideas that united many people. The fact that a tribe could mobilize many men for the war meant : tribalizing all or die. IV) With the war the tribe went to a state better organized and more stable. While the tribes were dissolved after the death of their leader, the state offered more chances to survive. However, the states were affected by its geography, history and the order in which its various institutional components were placed. Thus emerged China, India, the Islamic world and Europe. V) The emergence of institutions allowed to issue rules that coordinated social behavior. While tribes were based in instincts that favor family, the state depended on creating and maintaining social rules. Being China the first state, the Qin Dynasty (221 BC) developed a class officer loyal to the state, without family ties.

VI) The tribalism originated feudalism (union of peasants that paid taxes to a Lord in exchange for protection). Therefore, when the kings emerged, unions of farmers did not have absolute power because they shared power with feudal lords. VII) The concept of law emerged early because of the influence of religion. According to many European citizens law should be absolutely -above kings- to overcome the selfish nature of these. With these laws, the English Parliament executed Charles I and depose James II, giving lasting solution to a thorny problem. Only Britain and Denmark developed institutions to enforce strong states: the rule of law and mechanisms to maintain audited the king. Despite the law, the instinct to favor family never disappeared. That explains why Chinese emperors located eunuchs without family as administrators. VIII) Fukuyama emphasizes that failure to take into account human behavior will never permit to understand the nature of human political institutions. Since the substance of the institutions is given by the culture, these are difficult to change. Once created the people give them intrinsic value, almost religious, stabilizing institutions of human societies. IX) Some societies do not evolve because of the inertia of its institutions. According to Fukuyama, as the current Chinese political system does not allow its president to be audited, in the long term China is expected to be unstable.

ALIEN LIFE?

A group of scientists led by Richard Hoover (NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center), say they have discovered fossil cyanobacteria and worms inside a CI1 carbonaceous meteorite. The authors have published extensive photos of their findings in the “Journal of Cosmology”. His critics are asking why they not sent their pictures to Nature or Science where it had been more difficult to publish. In the photos enlarged by electron microscopy we can see filamentous structures similar to flatworms. According to Hoover they prove the existence of life, in almost any place in the universe, adding that life arrived early on Earth because of heavy bombardment of meteorites from outer space. Another opponent, Carl Pilcher (NASA Astrobiology Institute), says that most meteorites are contaminated by Earth organisms.

VIDA EXTRATERRESTRE?

REVOLUTION IN TRANSPORT

Abstract from Der Spiegel: Innovative transporttechnik.02.03.2011
In Dresden/Germany, a team of German researchers led by Ludwig Schultz (Leibniz Institute for Solid State and Materials Research), improved day by day, a silent, economic, levitating minicar using superconductors and magnets. The front of the car has 2 small batteries and a 330-pound box that allows manual minicar handling on rails, allowing it to float. 2 In addition to 2 sport seats, the minicar carry out on the back a cryostat to handle the high temperature of superconductors. The cryostat contains a mixture of ytrium-barium-copper oxide (YBCO), cooled to -196 degrees with liquid nitrogen. The suspended minicar (SupraTrans II), runs on a oval monorail of 80 m. The electrical resistance is cooled with helium. Superconductors allow these minicars maintains the distance between the rail and the magnets constant, creating stability. The trackless of these minicars works, at least until the cryostat is cooled. The minicar is set in motion by a linear motor. It is expected that around 2060, they will provide taxi service along the rails of different cities, at a distance of two feet between them. Deteriorated vehicles will be automatically removed and placed in a garage. They are also expected to be used at airports at speed of 20 km/h.

THE FEMALE BRAIN

After reading "The Female Brain" (2007/RBA Books Barcelona), the neuropsychiatrist Louann Brizandine (University of California), clarified many doubts regarding the female brain or women in general: 1) Just born, the female brain is flooded with female hormones that make women more susceptible to emotion and communication, a phenomenon that will continue throughout their lives, especially today that there is artificial female hormones. 2) As a result, psycho-emotional attitudes of a woman will be changing over their entire life. For such reason, women are 2 times more susceptible to depression than men. 3) To product of previous conflicts and evolutionary forces, women are more sociable and always try to avoid conflicts.

4) The extremely wayward attitudes of adolescent girls are explained by hormonal changes coupled to neuronal pruning and replacement of such period. 5) The book answers the question: Why many women go to the bathroom together?: to socialize, counted troubles and make alliances. Learning such things they achieve pleasure by self-releasing of oxytocin and dopamine. 6) To make a decision, a woman study faces and tone of voice which takes a long time. Men decide fast based on rational aspects. While women tend to socialize, men are isolated, like games, spend a lot of space for sex and are aggressive. 7) Both sexes solve their problems using different circuits. 8) Women recall in detail the emotional aspects that most impressed them.

ARTIFICIAL BRONCHUS

A French medical team led by Antoine Carpentier and Emmanuel Martinod (Avicenne Hospital Bobigny/Paris), implanted successfully (2009), an artificial bronchus manufactured from one piece of cryopreserved aorta from a tissue bank to a 78 year old patient with right lung advanced lung-bronchial cancer, subject to bilobectomy and lymph node removal. Not being the bronchus implanted rejected by the donor, it was unncessary administer to the patient imunosuppressive therapy. 16 months after surgery, the patient enters and leaves his house at will because he feels good about health concerns.

DAWKINS and RELIGION

Richard Dawkins argues in his new book "The Greatest Show on Earth", that natural reality is beautiful, understandable and endowed with magical greatness. With this book, Dawkins attempts to avoid the imposition of certain fundamentalist religious ideas which assume that life was designed. Regarding the proposals of Dean Hamer (God Gene hypothesis), who assumes that humans are genetically predisposed to believe in religion, Dawkins argues that rather we are genetically predisposed to adopt certain psychological attributes, that under certain circumstances predispose us to be religious, obedient to some authority -useful in certain circumstances- to be afraid of death, etc.

Indeed, some human societies invigorate themselves with the practice of certain religions. When a tribe has its God of War and their young people believe that their destiny is to fight and die to gain heaven, they fight with all their strength for it. In such cases, it is easy to distinguish enhancer memes. Dawkins argues that evolution and the orbit of the earth around the sun are facts. At one point they were hypothesis, now they are facts, sometimes subject to change. On the other hand there is the possibility that evolution be part of a wider system of thought, as could happen with the possibility of the existence of a variety of extra-planetary life forms. Dawkins is currently finishing a children's book "The Magic of Reality", in which after describing initial myths about certain phenomena, he goes further clarify them with scientific evidence.

GENERAL ANESTHESIA

Abstract from NYTimes.

According to Emery Neal Brown, Professor of Anesthesia (Harvard Medical School and D. of Anesthesia, Massachusetts General Hospital), general anesthesia is a reversible induced by drugs coma. When drugs are removed, the coma is gone. During a coma due to brain damage, the patient stays unconscious, insensible to pain, does not remember and does not move. In turn, general anesthesia is a neurophysiological stable state in which a patient is unconscious, insensible to pain, amnestic and motionless. Neal Brown that since 2004 studied human volunteers under general anesthesia, through analysis of brain scans (functional MRI), measurement of EEG monitors brain activity, Bayesian statistics and mathematical interdisciplinary models, signal processing algorithms to analyze brain data, argues that little by little we are knowing how to induce and maintain general anesthesia, reaching a more exactly neurophysiological definition of anesthesia, exact knowledge of specific sites of action of anesthetic drugs and measurements of the depth of anesthesia.

Neal Brown also examines the changes in activity of several brain areas in people who lost consciousness, demonstrating the existence of brain areas that are off and others are activated. Neal Brown sees the need for joint experiments with neuroscientists, ensuring that during general anesthesia, only certain parts are disconnected, while others remain active. Somehow drugs inhibit the brain to transmit information rendering it unconscious. Definitely drugs alter the way information is transmitted.

ANESTESIA GENERAL
