WE ARE ONLY NEURAL CIRCUITS

Thanks to the NYTimes, we can see pictures that show the long road between the first and dark stains developed by C. Golgi (1873), to Ramon y Cajal (1898), who described populations of individual neurons to the current photo (M.R.I. Diffussion/Scanning electronic microscopy), showing the routes of neurons and dendrites thanks to the use of modified rabies virus. Clusters of interconnected neurons, through fluorescent protein derived from jellyfish, stained by specific antibodies, etc. Beautiful pictures condensed by Carl Schoonover, a doctoral student in neuroscience at Columbia: "Portraits of the Mind: Visualizing the Brain from Antiquity to the 21st Century" from the publisher Abrams. As Schoonover and other scientists conclude, it is clear that we are bio-robots with just certain emerging evolutionary properties (consciousness) and what we called free will. There is nothing special in our inner self, only neural circuits.

SOMOS SOLO CIRCUITOS NEURALES

AGEING REVERSAL

Although Carol Greider and Ronald DePinho (Harvard University), just expected to slow the aging process of mice, the reversal of the process was quite a surprise. Scientists found that the weak, aged, infertile, genetically engineered mouse, lacking the enzyme telomerase, reversed the aging process when they inject the missing enzyme for 1 month to the mouse, rejuvenating its body, becoming a healthy mouse. As you know each cell division promotes cell telomere shortening, which in turn leads to cell death or senescence. Although aging by telomere shortening may be caused by excess of free radicals, smoking or exposure to ultraviolet light, the finding is encouraging. Injection of human telomerase enzyme is not well regarded by some scientists who argue that while telomerase is present throughout life in mice, in humans the disappearance or the reduction of the enzime is to prevent the emergence of cancer.

REJUVENECIMIENTO CORPORAL

BRAIN HUMAN CONNECTOME

Transhumanists have long hypothesized the possibility of living forever scanning million brain’ slices, images later emptied into supercomputers connected to artificial bodies enabling us to live with minor variations, forever. A first step in this direction was the construction of the first connectome (1970-80: map of 7000 structural-functional connections, related to 300 neurons), of the nematode C. Elegans. Now in some centers in the world has begun the mammoth task of building the human connectome (100 billion neurons). In the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Sebastian Seung (Computational Neuroscience), gives the first steps in this direction, creating the first functional hypotheses, the first software and helping to build the first fully automated machines to analyze human brain data.Seung has a huge amount of pictures of neurons, dendrites and synapses including rising color 3D images.

Since the manual analysis is slow, Seung commitment is to build machines capable to see. He employs : 1) serial block face scanning electron microscopy (SBF-SEM) for 3D images. 2) automated ultramicrotome (ATLUM). 3) In the construction of 3D brain images, segmental boundaries cause recognition problems to machines. Seung think machines must solve this problem by themselves with the help of new softwares that will train them. To this end, Viren Jain and Srini Turaga have developed the Maximin Affinity Learning of Image Segmentation (Malis) and the Boundary Learning by Optimization with Topological Constraints (BLOTC), which reproduces the precise locations of the limits, removing topological errors. 4) Omni software will replaces the human eye to analyze convolutional networks. 5) To identify interneuronal connections with great accuracy Seung has resorted to marking genetic methods. Ian Wickersham who works with him, uses recombinant forms of rabies virus that jump between synapses produces a strong bright thanks to the use of fluorescent proteins, revealing even the finest axons.

As connectomics is not static and is constantly evolving (as in adolescence),being destroyed and rebuilt, Seung postulate 3 hypotheses: 1) We are not our genome. We are our connectome, the real location of our consciousness 2) In the future it will be possible to cure mental disease by destruction or addition of new neural connections 3) If we could cryogenically preserve our brains it might be possible to rebuild and improve our brain in the future.

CONECTOMA CEREBRAL

RAPID DIAGNOSIS OF TUBERCULOSIS

American researchers have invented a fully automated machine (Xpert MTB/RIF: rapid diagnosis of M. tuberculosis and rifampicin resistance), to identify the bacillus M. Tuberculosis in less than 2 hours. The process involves mixing the sputum with a product that inactivates the M tuberculosis, including the mixture in a plastic cartridge and its subsequent inclusion in a special container of the machine that runs the analysis of DNA by PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Though not 100% accurate, the method permit to detect cases reported as negative or with scarce bacilli as those occurring in HIV-TB co-infection. The sensitivity and specificity of the test is: 98.2% and 99.2% respectively. The sensitivity to identify rifampin-resistant bacteria is 98.1%. This method is a prelude of future diagnosis (perhaps in less than 10 years), of diseases in which with only 1 ml of blood from the patient or a small piece of tissue will be done by molecular methods simultaneous diagnoses of thousands of diseases, in less than 5 minutes.

BRAIN ANTIEPILEPTIC PACEMAKER

After that 40% (out of 110), american epileptic improved after a brain pacemaker implantation (DBS system), German doctors implanted a pacemaker-like in Tubingen, starting in Europe this procedure. The americans developed 50% fewer attacks after 1 year follow up. In addition, 1 in 10 patients were seizure-free for 6 months. The pacemaker stimulates a brain region preventing attacks. This method is of value to those who develop side effects to antiepileptic drugs. Alireza Gharabaghi (Neurosurgical University Clinic in Tübingen), led the surgical German team.
Regular pulses are applied through fine wires to the anterior thalamus. The physical signs of an imminent attack induce the patient to press a button to launch pulses.

NEW HUMAN MICROBIOTE

I) When we look under a microscope a drop of contaminated water, are accounted for millions of germs. But if this drop of water is cultured grows only a small number of microorganisms. It happens that the traditional culture procedure is obsolete, there are better methods. More than 20 years ago, Carl Woese identified Archaea microorganisms living in extreme environments, sequencing its RNA. Since 1985, Jillian Banfield sequenced the 16S ribosomal RNA gene to identify germs living in sulfur, molybdenum and uranium mines and since 1999, to identify human germs. Many of these human previously not identified human germs (microbiota) plays a role in the generation of essential amino acids, in energy capture and facilitating the functions of our immune system. Humans and their partners the germs have coevolved. We now need to include the entire human microbiota for understanding how function our body. Ideas given to call: The new theory of germs.

II) Michael Morowitz and David Relman (Stanford University/California), are currently exploring the body human microbiota with this technique of sequencing, analyzing microbial genes to distinguish new species in the intestine, skin, mouth, having been built in the past 5 years a catalog gene of the human microbiota with germs that inhabit highly complex zones, interacting, in co-evolution, establishing connections between germs and our bodies,in nutrition, metabolism of drugs, obesity, cancer, autism and multiple sclerosis, showing that they follow logical principles : colonization, sucession, competition, cooperation, etc. Lita Proctor, has a 5 year contract to develop the Human Microbiome Project (HMP), devoted to sequencing the human microbiome. III) With the same technique of sequencing some researchers are also studying the process of bacterial colonization during the first 3 weeks of life in preterm infants and healthy humans neonates, with the intention of viewing the installation of the first germs. What germs come first?. How are the community of germs in a sterile gastrointestinal tract?. How to adjust the bacterial ecosystem during the illness, diet, antibiotic therapy?. Would it be correct the concept of one germ-one disease?.
MICROBIOTA HUMANA

EXTRA DIMENSIONS

According to the theoretical astrophysicist Amitai Bin-Nun (University of Pennsylvania), the effects of black holes on the stars could reveal the existence of extra dimensions to the 3 already known. The idea is based on: 1) the space has extra dimensions (6 more), that we can not see because they are curled into very small length scales (infinitesimal). 2) Black holes induce temporo-spatial folding. According to Einstein, induced folding changes the tracks of objects: instead of going straight, the planets orbit the sun. Einstein said that folding forces also affect light (gravitational lensing effect). If a star is behind a gravitational lens (black hole), it creates the illusion of multiple images of the star, intensifying its brilliance. If there are extra dimensions the gravity on the edge of the black hole will be stronger, making stellar images 44% brighter.

DIMENSIONES EXTRAS

COMPETITIVE GERMAN BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH

Germany strives to be competitive in world medical services through the integration of national hospital services with their universities. To that end since 2009, came into operation the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Disease (DZNE) located in Bonn with 7 associated institutes. Until recently the German biomedical research, its clinics and its associated institutes (Max Planck and Helmholtz Society), not always cooperated with each other, limiting their effectiveness. On November 9 of this year was opened the National Centre for Diabetes Research (DZD) and the German government approved the construction of four additional institutes: cardiovascular, infectious, pulmonary and cancer, to come into operation next year. Each center will receive $ 48 million a year and the DZNE something else.

Scientists of these institutes are free to structure the research. Each center will establish partnerships with universities and local non-university institutes. Once positioned, they can establish other centers outside their local areas. Instead of having 150 patients, the lung institute will now collect all Germany 1000 patients suffering from pulmonary fibrosis, determining specific markers that will help to develop new therapies. The activities of the institutes now have the security of long-term investment, increasing its international visibility. The idea is to have institutions well funded, well organized and decentralized.
INVESTIGACION BIOMEDICA ALEMANA COMPETITIVA

CANCER MAKES ITS OWN BLOOD VESSELS

Ten years ago, Mary Hendrix prevented the possible ineffectiveness of the first angiogenesis inhibitor, Avastin (bevacizumab) against melanoma cells, as these seemed to be making its own vascular bed to facilitate its nutrition. In present days, 2 studies that used samples of glioblastoma brain tumors, demonstrated the existence of blood vessels produced by cancer cells themselves, characterized by an extensive network of abnormal vessels (endothelial hyperplasia and glomeruloid structures) near the tumor with genetic markers typical of glioblastoma. Glioblastoma cells have a subpopulation of CD133+ multipotent stem cells capable of differentiation in tumor and endothelial lineages.

A first study performed in laboratory dishes, led by Viviane Tabar (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center/NY), demonstrated the ineffectiveness of Avastin to inhibit angiogenesis induced by glioblastomas. Avastin inhibited the maturation of endothelial progenitor cells in the endothelium, but not the differentiation of CD133+ cells into endothelial progenitors. A second study led by Ruggero De Maria (Italian National Institute of Health / Rome), killed between 20-90% of glioblastoma cells after choking nutrient blood vessels of tumor cells. Today it is expected that combination therapy against tumor cells and blood vessels will remove a large number of cancers.

The number of daily calories consumed by a normal adult is 2600. If for some reason you eat more, these are stored as fat (obesity). However, there are few people who are against the rule: eat up to 8000 calories a day, without storing fat as the case of the american Lizzie Velasquez (21 years) who eat every 15 minutes, is extremely thin (weight 28 kg, height: 157 cm), without producing a single gram of fat and exhibiting only a very small muscle mass. Lizzie was born prematurely, weighing 1 190 grams and measuring 40 cm. The doctors who attended her said the uterus that contained her had little amniotic fluid. Currently, except for a blind right eye, all the internal organs of Lizzie (liver, lungs, heart, etc.) remain normal. Her brain has developed normally. Lizzie is aware only if she eats constantly. If she does not eat constantly, she start to deteriorate, her immune system declines, loses power, because she has no energy reservations.

At 19 she received massive blood transfusions because her red blood cells do not multiply properly. A common cold can keep her bedridden for weeks. Lizzie ingested oral iron and multiple vitamins to stay healthy. Her gynecologist says he can have children without passing her condition to her children. Abhimanyu Garg (Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas/Texas), who has studied extensively her, think the cause is genetic (Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome). A question on the mind of those who study her is: Where it is going the consumed extra energy?. We think that energy storage as fat is an adaptation acquired by humans to have extra energy in prevention to famine periods. Lizzie would have returned to the condition of the first humans lacking this adaptation, for some reason: to defend themselves from the harmful effects of junk food.

COMING DISCOVERIES -II-

According to Stuart L Pimm (Conservation Ecology, Duke Univ.), now that has been completed a globalof the American Geophysical Union), now we know better the universal extent of the effects of the Indian Ocean, as is extracted from data collected over several years. According to him, the Indian Ocean circulation triggered major changes in the atmosphere affecting the entire planet. Every month tons of clouds move eastward affect the monsoon in India, generatin census of marine many are interested in knowing how many species of animals and other organisms exist in the oceans. How many species are highly dispersed in the oceans. Whether the high diversity of the oceans is built by a few species, with the risk of mass extinction. According to Michael J. McPhaden (President g rainfall in USA and hurricanes in the Atlantic. The Madden-Julian oscillation generated by the Indian Ocean is so powerful that its wind speed up or slow the rotation of the earth. According to Ken Caldeira (Carnegie Institution), although the climate models have improved little allow projections of climate changes for coming years. So, if the global economy hinges on information technology and industrial services, global temperatures will rise between 1.1 and 2.9 degrees C, in the coming years. If on the other hand we continue using fossil energy, the predicted rise of the temperature will be 2.4 to 6.4 degrees. Jane McGonigal (Games Make us Better). Future games could have practical applications and even could generate new discoveries. There is already a very competitive game (Foldit), which encourages players to design the most appropriate protein folding. According to David Haussler (Center for Biomolecular Science and Engineering), scientist will read new types of genomes (of immune cells and various forms of cancer), enabled by the fall in the cost of reading genomes. The genomes of immune cells constantly change to stay healthy. Rearranging some sections of our DNA, genes create new immune cells to form antibodies and receptors. The International Cancer Genome Consortium has the goal to sequence 25.000 genomes of a variety of cancers, allowing to select the best anticancer drugs and better tolerate transplants.

DESCUBRIMIENTOS EN LOS SIGUIENTES AÑOS -II-

Stuart L Pimm (Conservation Ecology, Duke Univ). Michael J. McPhaden (President of American Geophysical Union). Jane McGonigal (Games Make us Better).

COMING DISCOVERIES

A group of scientists foresee the following discoveries for the following next 10 years. Heidi B Hammel (Space Science Institute), we will orbit and discover the 2011, the insides of the large asteroid Vesta (330 miles wide). An asteroid that was born along with our solar system 4.6 billion years ago. After it, scientific will study Ceres (likely to have water, minerals and a small atmosphere). Charles M. Vest (President, National Academy of Engineering), forecast a new era in biology. Until now, biologists were studying cells and tissues, while engineers built bridges, buildings and factories. Realizing engineers in recent years about efficiency, strength and flexibility of living forms, they have begun to imitate in their buildings some of these processes. At the University of Delft/Netherlands, certain bacteria close cracks in concrete construction. Steven Strogatz (Applied Mathematics at Cornell University), says that soon the computers will tell us what is true but not necessarily that we will understand it. At the University of Cornell have created Eureqa, a computer that has rediscovered the physical laws of Newton. Rob Carlson (Biodesic), foresee that in the coming years some fans could draw a little blood, add to it commercial genes and facilitators obtaining quickly efficient and inexpensive stem cells. André A. Fenton (Center for Neural Science, NYU), said that soon will be discovered the organization of memory within the brain. He and his team have discovered the molecule that stores memory (PKMzeta) that if is blocked vanish the memory. Inducing animals to memorize things he hopes built memory maps. Will continue...

TWO SIDES OF A COIN

According to the graphic designer and computer scientist John Maeda (Rhode Island School of Design Photograph), innovation emerge when art and science converge. According to Maeda for invention to occur, the scientist must study art. Maeda studied Computing and the Arts at MIT. The designer says that to the basic core of learning: science, technology, engineering and math, one must add art. The innovation does not come from equations or new classes of chemicals, it comes from human experience, listening to music, seeing good art. Imagine a Nobel Prize of Chemistry modeling in clay molecular structures enabling better world thinks. Art helps to see the world in a less limited way. Our economy is built by people who think so convergent. In contrast, artists are divergent thinkers, expanding the horizon of possibilities. 80% of the human experience is what you see, what is played, how one feels, it is not technology. For politicians it comes down to measurements. It is easy to measure. Singapore and Japan, known for their high use of test-taking procedures (focusing on science and engineering), look to the West when seeking innovations. The best scientists are those who are humanists and scientists at the same time.

OUR BODIES ARE HANDLED ENERGY.

See video Newton channel

Paul Nurse, Nobel Prize of Physiology and Medicine 2001 (findings regarding the role of cyclins and kinases in cell cycle), has developed the idea that ultimately the biological cells and higher organisms should be considered in terms of matter, energy and information, the latter being the most important. Also, that biology should be thought of as a highly organized system. The double helix is according to Nurse an example of stored digital information, with the inheritance contained therein being a great mass of information. According to Nurse, each cell is a complex computer, which messages are transmitted mainly by chemical methods. Logic simplification that will make possible that certain body modifications and the eventual cure of diseases will be made in the future through energy manipulation.

SOMOS ENERGIA MANIPULABLE

ENERGY COMING FROM THE CENTER OF OUR GALAXY

What does it mean to have discovered 2 large bubbles that emitted gamma rays, 50 ° above and below the center of the Milky Way, with a diameter of 40 degrees longitude?. According to Doug Finkbeiner (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics), one of the authors of the discovery, gamma-ray of these bubbles have been created by a huge injection of energy to the center of our galaxy, via a past accretion that built a massive black hole or perhaps nuclear explosions generated by the birth and death of stars in the last 10 Megayears. Maybe there is too much dark energy there. The study of the origin and evolution of these bubbles, extracted from data from Fermi Space Telescope NASA's gamma rays, will improve our understanding of recent energy events within our galaxy and open the doors for future exploitation of this energy for more advanced huamn beings.

ARTIFICIAL BLOOD

Mickie Bhatia and colleagues (McMaster University/Hamilton, Canada), achieved the direct conversion of dermal fibroblasts from adult human volunteers to multilineage adult blood cells without the intermediate step of stem cells (pluripotency). Experiment candidate to be a scientific breakthrough of the year. Insertion (within fibroblasts) of Oct4 gene (POU5F1) carried by a virus, multiple cytokines and activated factors stimulating hematopoietic transcriptión, were able to generate derived pan-leukocyte with marker CD45 cells, the same that gave rise to granulocytic, monocytic, megakaryocytic and erythroid linage that later showed in vivo ability to be engrafted. In this case the activated blood forming programs formed blood different from that produced by embryonic stem cells. The decision to form blood from adult cells was based on the fact that red blood cells created from embryonic stem cells do not contain the adult form of hemoglobin. The technique will help to develop autologous replacement cell therapies, avoiding complications (teratomas),associated with the use of pluripotent stem cells. Now, it is needed to develop clinical trials to see if these artificial blood cells are as good as real.
SANGRE ARTIFICIAL

DARK MATTER

The latest issue of Scientific American offers a brief summary of what is known actually about dark matter, an important cosmological aspect to know the origin and evolution of elementary particles, galaxies, clusters of galaxies and the whole universe. According to the magazine it was thought of this type of stuff from 1900, following the discovery of loss of nuclear atomic energy (radioactive beta decay), through emission of ionizing particles. To explain such radiation, Fermi postulated the existence of a new force of nature associated to certain particles driving forces (W and Z), which induced atomic nucleus to lose energy by heavier particles. Later it was discovered that the weak nuclear force was necessary to maintain separate nuclear particles. The task now is to identify the constituent particles of dark matter using 3 strategies: annihilation, scattering and production of these particles in the lab. When 2 WIMPs (weakly interacting massive particles) collide, disappear leaving a set of electrons, antielectrons (positrons) and neutrinos. Such collisions would not be frequent, otherwise it would not left WIMPs. Thus, particle candidates for dark matter are neutrinos, wimps, axions and other hidden particles that interact with ordinary matter through gravity.

Also contributing to the knowledge of dark matter are the discrepancies caused by mass measurements of galaxies, clusters of galaxies and the total visible universe through dynamic and relativistic media, which established that dark matter constitutes 80% of the total universe matter, while the visible matter only accounts for 20%. Another way of approaching the understanding of dark matter was understood that to hold together large groups of galaxies requires 10 times extra matter. Today, all agree that certain gravitational effects of the visible matter are conditioned by influences of dark matter. Through the force of gravity, dark matter sculpts the universe forming a network of galaxies. One of the goals of the Large Hadron Collider is to find these particles, especially WIMPs type, that act only through weak nuclear force, being immune to electrical and magnetic forces that dominate our world today.
MATERIA OSCURA

Through the following steps: I) Use of a microcamera mounted on special glasses to take photos of the environment. II) The video is stored on a portable PC that transforms the digitized electrical impulses into signals directed toward an wireless implanted chip (Finn/light sensitive with 1500 microphotodiodes), 3 mm long, located beneath the retina and connected to a power source, located behind ear. III) The light sensitive microchip stimulates the optic nerve which, in turn, transmits electrical impulses to the brain. The microchip replace damaged rods and cones in diseases such as retinitis pigmentosa, partially restoring vision to people who for years saw only shadows. Actually, patients can distinguish a banana an apple, a fork from a knife, doctors and people in a room. The implants performed in the hospital Tübingen (Germany), are forever. They are not cheap, costing between € 70000-80000.

3-D WOLRD: AN ILLUSION?

Since 2001 it is holds the British-German experiment: GEO600 in Hannover (A. Einstein Institute/Germany), to capture directly cosmic gravitational waves (tiny audible distortion of space-time caused by supernovae, neutron stars, black holes), through a 600 m interferometer that uses laser light. Last year, strange noises began to be captured in one of the tubes, to which European scientists remained cautious. However, the American physicist Craig Hogan, argued since 2008 that this noise comes from a 2-D tiny scale world, that permeates our entire universe, adding that the 3-D holographic world that we perceive is an illusion (a projection of the time interlacing depth). According to Hogan, the noise suggests that the experiment ran into the lower boundary of space-time resolution.

Living in a 3-D world, is impossible to perceive the 2-D world, because nothing travels faster than light. A hologram can see an object in relief. Varying the position of the observer we can get different perspectives of the hologram of the object. In modern times, a hologram is a 3-D image recorded by laser on a special sensitive emulsion. An illusion likely to be discovered using sensitive equipment. The basis of the theory of Hogan is math, rather than raw data, being that its main weakness. Hogan is building today at Fermilab a small holómeter (40 m long), to study gravitational waves and the real 2-D microworld. In their experiment a split laser beam is directed over 2 horizontal tubes, perpendicular to each other. At the end of the tubes are precision mirrors that reflect back the laser beam, the same that will be combined and superimposed.

AGEING

15 years ago, the thin and bearded British biogerontologist Aubrey de Grey (now, 47), said that the death was a disease and therefore was possible to prevent, to treat and to cure it. To prolong the lifespan (and prevent the death), he recommended further study of DNA function and pathways of cellular aging. He added later a strategy to rejuvenate the human body through tissue transplantation. In his book The Mitochondrial Free Radical Theory of Aging (1999), he sustained that eliminating mitochondrial DNA damage could significantly extend the lifespan. De Grey says that some mutations cause cancer and other cellular dysfunction, that some intracellular aggregates and senile plaques cause atherosclerosis, that stop of cell division weakens heart cells, induce osteoporosis and deteriorate the immune system. That certain non-dividing cells causing diabetes type 2 (lower generation of insulin), which causes cellular senescence and more rigid junctions (hardening of tissue). His principles however have been strongly criticized for 28 scientists (Embo Report. 2005. 6 (11) :1006-8), arguing that the tenets and Grey therapies does not have extended the life of any animal or human. De Grey has replicated, arguing that these scientists have not understood the basics of senescence.

In recent weeks however, good news come for de Grey. Tom Kirkwood (Director of the Institute for Ageing and Health/Newcastle University), who made several studies on ageing says that evolution invested heavily in maintaining the reproductive area and little to lengthen life (soma theory). The evolution invested little in somatic maintenance and repair of cells. That ageing is the result of accumulations of debris and damage to cells and tissues. The genes determinants of longevity and frequency of senescence are related to cell maintenance (DNA repair, antioxidant and anti-stress proteins). Like de Grey, Kirkwood does not believe that longevity is scheduled. This can be shorter or longer depending on the efficiency of cellular maintenance. Thus, Kirkwood has arrived at the same conclusions as the Grey. One recent work performed at The Institute for Ageing and Health, including immunofluorescence technique is the led by Professor Glyn Nelson who is identifying cell populations in older than 85 years with irreversible damage to DNA that prevent cell reproduction. This work has potential to be scientific breaktrough of the year if the work is refined and if the findings are subjected to appropriate holistic abstraction.
