PERSONALITY TRAITS

PERSONALITY and GEOGRAPHY

Studies of cultural geography, made in Peru, argue that coastal (inhabitants of Lima, Trujillo, Piura, Tacna, etc), living facing the Pacific Ocean and those of the jungle (Iquitos, Yurimaguas, Pucallpa, Puerto Maldonado, Moyobamba), living near the   banks of the Amazon, Huallaga, Ucayali, Urubamba, etc. rivers, are cheerful, optimistic and gentle, because they live facing the sea, ready to go in search of better opportunities. Conversely, those who live in the highlands (Cuzco, Puno, Abancay, Juliaca, Cerro de Pasco, etc.), are taciturn and suspicious, because they live surrounded by hills. Although several reports speak of overly respectful and almost shy Japanese character, we only had knowledge in this regard of properly planned works performed inUSA. Now, according to a   well-planned study of 5 personality types, conducted via online by psychologists from the University of Cambridge, to 400,000 British, concluded that Scots are the most welcoming, friendly and emotionally stable. In other words,   certain personality traits are more prevalent in certain areas of   England: the people of Wales is shy and neurotic  and the less friendly, but conscientious  people are in London. The survey authors argue that these personality types are conditioned in certain areas by social traditions, customs, lifestyles, environmental influences, strongly associated to economic, social and health variables. As all know, worldwide, people choose to live areas that meet their psychological needs.

PERSONALIDAD  y   GEOGRAFIA

PROTON THERAPY

PROTON  CANCER THERAPY
As mentioned in previous articles being  our bodies   constructed and maintained by surrounding energy, an obvious therapeutic method is to  use   graduated energy  to restore, maintain or   delete inappropriate provided energy, keeping our bodies in health. At the end,  a tumor is a bag of inappropriate energy and diseases are energetic disorders. And, although the use of radiation therapy to alleviate or eliminate localized cancer has sense, its benefits were offset by the concomitantly destruction performed in healthy surrounding tissues, major limitation of their employment.  An alternate  antitumor, energy therapy, improved over the years used accelerated proton (instead of photons),  that reach  high energy in  small  cyclotrons –little machines- similar  to  the european Great Hadron Collider, although the latter collide  particles and the proton  beam destroys cancer cells  layer by layer, pixel by pixel with high accuracy using the pencil beam scanning technique. Protons are obtained from a source of atomic ions of H, from which electrons and protons are separated and injected into the cyclotron, which accelerates in a  system that subsequently degrade them  to regulate its energy, finally   passing through a device that  rotates    at 360 degrees   delineating perfectly  the tumor. The problem with these cyclotrons is its cost: $ 125 million, although the creator of these machines, the Belgian Yves Jongen is building cheaper prototypes.

GENETIC SURGERY

MUTATIONS  ELIMINATED   BY GENETIC SURGERY

The embryonic DNA edition (genetic surgery) is an immunological technique used by bacteria to avoid an attack by viruses, plasmid, etc. Copied and applied to monkey embryos the technique produce convincing and encouraging results. The CRISPR (Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats) technique resembles the process of copyingand pasting of usual writings. An RNA sequence (prepared by genetic engineering) locates a specific region of DNA (dangerous mutation), where a DNA enzyme, attached to RNA guided sequence, cuts the DNA, eliminating the dangerous sequence. After that, genetic sequences of DNA-written at will,  are inserted into the empty space.  With this technique, previous procedures that produce 3 parent's babies become obsolete.  At least in mice it is possible to eliminate several sequences at the same   time. As inserted DNA sequences are built by researchers it is expected to generate therapies to correct genetic defects. However, the technique also facilitates the creation of designer babies. While the technique can insert genetic sequences at will in embryos, fertilized eggs and sperm (passing the change to future generations), there has been a great ethical debate. Some scientists applied the technique to convert primates in models of human diseases, especially those related to the brain.

GERMAN FEMALE SCIENTISTS

ABOUT,  EXPERIMENTS.

From Der Spiegel

Mindset of the Nobel Prize in Medicine 1995: Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard, regarding the success or failure of experiments, product of his thoughts about genetic research of fruit fly. I- The scientific and her group formed exclusively in German labs, eager to work with mutant flies because they wore all genes that controlled the development of the fly. No one had done before systematic attempts in this direction. No one knew how many genes were involved and if it was possible to identify them all. Carefully conducted preliminary tests and calculated possible results. This gave themsecurity, about what they would find. They developed the experiments with optimism, perseverance and courage. His persistence and sometimes arrogance, worked. II- The scientific learned that although half of the experiments fail we should always try them. III- The scientist must have psychological support and courage to take risks. The higher the risk, the greater the gain. Failed experiments are not failures; they are just failed attempts ... maybe the methodology did not work. If you wish not fail, it is never found anything new. If we fail it is just does that things not work that way. In practice even successful experiments cannot teach us much except that this is not the great road. Trying to get answers, we should remember that what we try to identify something not known, yet. If anyone thinks he has the answer before the experiment it does not lead to anything good because it is a biased thinking. It is wonderful to attempt results, without knowing so much about something. When results are known, many new things are understood. IV- The scientific advised not to publish failed experiments, because another researcher can make them work. If, however, the work is successful write and circulate it first among equals, providing them all possible data until it is accepted as true and verifiable. Many unimportant things are posted. It is not only to generate data, but identify valuable things, to understand and answer fundamental questions. To reach the stars, you have to crave something really important, new and risky.

GANYMEDE

A  SALTWATER  OCEAN  IN   GANIMEDES

The presumption of water under  the surface of Jupiter's moons (Io, Callisto and Europa), now joins to the almost certain presence of a hidden saltwater ocean perhaps 150 km depth beneath the thickness of a thick layer of ice on Ganymede, the largest moon of Jupiter. After analyzing photographic material from the years 2010-2012, obtained by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, was observed dancing auroras induced by the  strong magnetic fields of  Ganymede and Jupiter's rotation in the northern hemisphere of the moon  (see photo). According to one of the authors of the article: Joachim Saur (University of Cologne/Germany), magnetic fields of Ganymede, cause bright auroras due to the uptake of cosmic particles by the magnetic field, which after contacting with the oxygen of the  thin atmosphere produce Ganymede’s  auroral glow with patterns that change every 10 hours, daily. The existence of this ocean opens up the possibility of bacterial life on this moon. While many scientists believe there may be bacterial life in such ocean, the  real thing  is that can not be denied the generation of marine animals capable of developing a culture and communicate with each other by the only possible way: long-range sonic languages.

MINIHEARTS

MÍNIMAL  DRUG TOXICITY

With the creation of cardiac organoids (mini-organs, mini-hearts : cardiomyocyte clusters), placed, fed and studied in silicon chips, the door opens to create better  drug efficacy  and  safety and low toxicity, which will serve to treat several diseases in a personalized way. We believe that many scientists are already preparing to use the new methodology (Cardiac Microphysiological For Drug Screening System), at large scale, leaving aside cumbersome tests so far in animals. According to AnuragMathur and Kevin Healy (University of California. Berkeley), the new method will save time, money and  will gain  many followers because: a) To avoid ethical problems, not embryonic stem cells are used, but induced stem cells (iPSC), derived from human, epithelial, mature cells, which after being dedifferentiated to stem cells are maintained in nutrient media until converted into cardiomyocytes, the same that are inserted into silicon chambers forming three-dimensional  layers, beating to 50-80 beats per minute. b) Although initially, drug development will be costly, it is expected that iPSC cells will be derived from the patient to be treated (personalized medicine). c) Nutrients and drugs are infused through channels located on both sides of the camera. In studies with Verapamil, Metoprolol, Isoprenaline, etc, it is clear that soon we will have more powerful drugs and with faster action than digital, for example. The researchers conclude that the new methodology greatly exceeds the results obtained in animals.

GENERAL THEORY of RELATIVITY

BEYOND EINSTEIN and his Theories

I) In celebrating   100 years of the creation of the generaltheory of relativity, it should be good,  to  know that  the way in which Einstein elaborated his theories was exactly the way a child, a very sensitive composer musician  or a scientist without mental shackles would do  trying to understand the world. Einstein liked understand the whole rather than the parts, unlike the way many scientists operate today, almost always oriented  to  parceled  aspects of the  knowledge. With imagination freed from the straitjacket that  impose certain scientific rules, Einstein engorge prior knowledge in such  a way, that knowing the whole, it was easy for him to produce great conceptual leaps. In our opinion, only those working like Einstein, Darwin, Schrödinger, Newton, should be called scientists. The rest are aspiring to scientists or just technicians. To have growing number of scientists like Einstein, will require creating schools for children and adolescents totally different than today. II) The special theory of relativity, sustains on simple and almost magical tenets the relativity of time and other variables for certain objects close to the speed of light, which should remain constant for all observers. Spacetime, acquired in the special theory of relativity the character of relative variable, not absolute. Therefore, if a human twin remains stationary while the other twin is moving, to the extent that the spacecraft of the latter approaches the speed of light: time slows down (time dilation) and the length of the ship are shortened (length contraction), to allow the speed of light remains constant in stationary and moving contexts. The theory argues that the time could stop if the moving object reaches the speed of light. III) As in the special theory it is unspoken about acceleration of space objects, Einstein proposed in 1915, the generaltheory of relativity to explain the trajectories of cosmic objects following potential gravitatory geodesic lines.  According to this theory, massive universal objects warped the spacetime around them because of the gravitational pull, explaining the movements of objects through spacetime. Although many experiments have proven this theory, the theory need yet to be tested against the huge gravitational forces of black holes, or some bigbang (time stopped), to know if the theory is compatible with the laws of quantum physics and demonstrate the existence of gravitational waves in the spacetime.

WATER in MARS

WATER in MARS

Although current evidence  signal  Mars as a planet without surface water, recent studies support the existence of water on the young Mars -by an estimated of  about 2 billion years period- After mapping the Martian atmosphere with 3 powerful infrared telescopes (Keck II telescope, NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility and the ESO's Very Large Telescope located in Chile), scientists from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center/USA, determined the composition of water molecules in the Martian atmosphere at different locations and seasons, for 6 years, establishing that as  higher the concentration of heavy water (an H replaced by deuterium), retained in the Martian water cycle (Martian polar caps),  higher was the amount of ordinary water (H2O), lost in space. The ratios of  common water relative to heavy water allowed to calculate that 4.5 billion years ago, Mars was a warm, wet  planet and that  with the elapse of time   lose 6 times more water (87%) than the currently (13%), identified in its polar ice caps. By losing their common water over millions of years, Mars lost pressure and heat to keep water liquid, pushing back the ocean to the North Pole where it remained frozen. In the early Mars, the amount of water was enough to create a global ocean, able to cover the entire surface of Mars to a depth of 137 m. Additional data argue that water of this ocean would have mixed with another deeper ocean located in lowland areas of the Martian northern hemisphere, opening the possibility of habitability and evolution of life on Mars.

INDIAN SCIENCE

INDIAN   SCIENCE

The problems that face Indian science, are the same that hinder delivery of quality science in many developing countries: 1) Indian scientists win Nobel prizes, but not working in India. 2) Indian researchers are not promoted for his scientific achievements but for his years of service, remaining in their positions as much as possible. 3) Although Indian public institutions havesufficient funds, they impose many restrictions to scientists, being required less government control. 4) The movement of scientists, from one institution to another is not allowed. 5) Public scientific institutions prefer to fill positions through internal promotions. 6) No Indian institution, questions the neglecting of Indian science, from the government. Against this, it is recommended: a) Promotion of science must be carried out by non-government structures agencies. b) Create a fund administering agency composed of active scientists, some of which would not necessarily be Indians. It is crucial that research purposes criteria be  independent of government control. c) Set rotation of administrative leadership positions every 5 years, promoting the return to active scientific activity. d) Promote the creation of working trans-institutional groups in highly selected areas in order to promote competition and successful results. e) To promote efficiency in the expenditure of funds, it is recommended working in competitive environments, unaffected by government regulations. This way,   will be possible to pay competitive salaries to young researchers. Public-private collaboration is important for improving productivity, cost reduction and lower energy consumption. f) It is important to create work environments where researchers must be retributed by its scientific achievements, rather than by administration and longevity. If you remember these names: Jagadish Chandra Bose, Satyendra Nath Bose, Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, Srinivasa Ramanujan, Har Gobind Khorana, Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar, Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, you  will  understand that it will not be difficult to develop a great Indian science.
CIENCIA   HINDU

TECHNO-BREAKTHROUGH

TECHNO-BREAKTROUGH of the   YEAR

In a previous article (Bigger brains. 02.25.2015), we qualified as techno-breakthrough of the year, the discovery of a sequence of human DNA: HARE5 (human-accelerated regulatory enhancers), which promote brain development in transgenic mouse embryos in an experiment conducted by researchers at Duke University (USA). Another finding, similar but performed in the Institute of Molecular CellBiology and Genetics: MPI-CBG (I. Max Planck Dresden-Germany) confirms and extends the results identified previously. To our surprise in the video attached, the neurobiologist: Wieland Huttner, Director and leader of the MPI-CBG, said that his group is working on the study of 56 genes related to brain development for 25 years. A feat performed in a research institute, from which everyone should be proud: Max Planck Institute. According to Huttner, the gene: ARHGAP11B, is the most important of all genes involved in brain development because: a) According to Svante Pääbo (Evolutionary Anthropology Leipzig), this gene is unique, it is only possessed by humans and our closest relatives (Neardenthals and Denisova-Human). b) Chimpanzees lack this gene. c) The gene induces the formation of larger amounts of brain stem cells, which in turn induce the formation of a higher number of neurons (twice the normal number of neurons in a mouse). Also promotes the formation of neocortex folds, increasing brain size.

Otro descubrimiento similar,  pero realizado en el Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics : MPI-CBG (I. Max Planck.
