PROLONGED FASTING

How long can remain more or less in good health, a human being that fast?. ¿Where would come the energy if you stay in fasting more than three weeks?. There are reports of fast deaths of some humans and others who remained alive for up to 60 days. According to Hippocrates, fasting few days, purify the body, mind, deeply beautifying skin and hair. It is hoped that these questions will be resolved by hindu physicians of Physiology & Allied Sciences Institute of National Defence (Ahmedabad/India), after scrutinizing body scans and heart, blood and brain tests of the yogi 83 Prahlad Jani, who allegedly fast from 8 years without taking food or water. Results that could be useful in natural disasters, extreme stress or space travel. Jani a lifelong fasting meditating yoga, spent 10 days in 2003 in an Indian hospital, where he proved he had a hole in the palate from which flow a liquid like water that he drinked.

AYUNOS PROLONGADOS

HUMAN and EARTH BRAIN

Growing advances in digital technic and computational neurobiology allowing to study to the brain for parts (reverse-engineer), are facilitating to understand how brain functions permitting the construction of 2 brain models to great scale that although run but slow that real brains, simulate big number of neurons and connections. At the moment the models lack sensitive inputs and motor ouputs and of important subcortical structures (cerebellum, amygdale, spine), looking like sleep rhythms. From one side: I) Henry Markram’s model (Blue Brain Project), offering a detailed neuronal reconstruction, complex systems of connections, complex range of gates and communications mechanisms of infinite detail. Of another side the model of II) Dharmendra Modha (IBM), creator of a simulated program of the brain of a cat. In his simplified model of sinapsis and interneuronal connections, the neurons alone have soma with nuclei and simplified spikes. The goal of Modha is to program in parallel, architectures to great scale to carry out simulations of great number of neurons and synapsis. Modha hopes to have supercomputers the 2019, looking like bebe brains or of psychotics. The pattern of Modha has created a conflict among the use of simplified models to run but quick with that of neuronal complex but detailed to understand its operation.

Complementarily (and, if the exponential growth of calculation power doesn't cease), it is hoped to build devices of common use, based on principles of neural computation, probabilístic (not deterministic), able to reason inductively (not deductively). The seminal paper of Simón Haykin (McMaster University): "Cognitive radio: Brain-empowered wireless communications", allowing the generation of wireless nets with devices that use neural computational principles menace to build a new infrastructure of the world, with sensors that will give us information on the use of the electricity, conditions of roads, patterns of weather and of dissemination of illnesses, optimizing goals, regulating the flow of resources, making to the world that surrounds us but useful and efficient.

FULL FACE'S TRANSPLANT

Spanish doctors from Vall d'Hebron hospital (Barcelona), has just carried out successfully the first full transplant of face (entire skin, superior and inferior maxillary bones, palate, cheekbone, nose, muscles, teeth). A pioneer process because apart from solving the aesthetic problem and function of face’s muscles, exalts the kindness of plastic surgery and microsurgery. The patient, a 30 year-old farmer that accidentally shot himself in his face 5 years ago, converts the movie Face/Off , in reality. Before the face transplant, the patient didn't speak; alone breathed and ate through tubes. Now he speaks, eats and laughs.

Previous to the transplant the patient was extracted what was remaining of his skin, leaving him only his tongue and eyeballs. His denuded face was replaced then with whole skin, muscles and donor's bones in a process that last 24 hours. The operation shows the success of neurovascular microsurgery, allowing to unite accurately small blood vessels and nerves with full recovery of sensibility and motor function. Now it is hoped to set aside infections and self attacks of immunologic system against the donated tissue. The french woman Isabelle Dinoire (partial face transplant/2005), is well, after having overcome successfully two self immunologic attacks.

Ahora habla, come y rie.

INDUCED PLURIPOTENT STEM CELLS

An interesting report on the potential of induced pluripotent stem cells (IPCSs: reprogramming of mature differentiated cells toward others with functional characteristics similar to embryonic stem cells), brings us in the last number of Scientific American. Apart from upgrade us and to put on in perspective around these cells, the article uses an up-to-date format using sound, pictures, drawings, pictures, videos. We expect more presentation like this because this will be the communication of future. IPCSs has some problems; sometimes, the final product is a cancer or a teratoma. In other occasions they don't generate the wanted tissue, fact attributable to functional interference caused by the virus in charge to carry out the the necessary genes for reprogramming. Nevertheless it is expected in about 10 years to regenerate or to form in personalized form any organ using these cells coming from the own sick person. It is also hoped to make in these cells IPCS rehearsals of medications against any illness, avoiding to appeal to animals and human beings. Important landmarks related with IPCSs are the approval of human-animal embryos fusion in England (2007), the efforts of the company Geron (2009), to revert the effects of paraplegias using IPCS cells and the nonexistence of ethical problems with these cells because they don't come from human embryos.

CELULAS MADRE PLURIPOTENCIALES INDUCIDAS

EXTRATERRESTRES

The new book of Paul Davies : The Eerie Silence. Renewing our Search for Alien Intelligence postulates : I) Extraterrestrial alien search methods of SETI (radio signals), are too conservative II) We look for extraterrestrial life in mistaken roads and in mistaken places III) SETI centers its search based in an anthropocentrism, assuming that all E.T. resemble us. We should take off such a mental tie (and other), to the brevity. IV) As long as the civilization but near would be located to 1,000 years light of us, would be quite difficult to communicate with them. Nevertheless it is necessary to continue analyzing these signals V) If an advanced civilization contemplates us now, they would see us like in the year 1000 A.C.

VI) We should put a lot of attention to our own Earth. If the life begins here, possibilities of second genesis would exist in other planets. VII) So, exist the possibility that E.T. could have been here 1 million year ago, without up to now we recognize their signals through the impact of their technology. They could already be using our internet VIII) If the universe is full of life an aliens generation could exist with post-biological intelligence: immortal, with characteristics of cyborgs or pure machines. An encounter with them will pose us in contact with systems of processing of information, vastly superiors IX) Who would evaluate an extraterrestrial signal?. What would mean this signal for our society, our personal identity, religion, science?. Given our antecedents exist the possibility that we react militarily. X) Concludes Davies that if alone there is life here, would be a serious tragedy to annihilate among us, the only intelligent species of the cosmos.

E.T.

ICELAND'S VOLCANO

The eruption of the volcano Eyjafjallajokull (Iceland, island above rocky submarines volcanos of North Atlantic Ocean), pouring tons of particles of sulphur dioxide of up to 6 km high for all Europe, forcing the closing of airports and suspension of flights of European airlines before the fear of lack of visibility and destruction of airplane’s engines force us to imagine scenes of more span happened 65 million years ago, when a big meteorite collided against Earth generating enormous powder columns around the planet containing silica, coal, iridium and others, creating a mantle that stopping the entrance of solar light and annuling the photosynthesis, conditioned an intense cold along one year, causing the non alone death of dinosaurs but the extinction of 50% of species of that time. In spite of their smallest quantity and duration the current toxic cloud, has showed their potential of altering the European climate.

NEW SEA SPECIES

Pictures taken from Der Spiegel.

After carefully examining te pictures of new species of multicellular organisms living in the deep sea of the Atlantic Basin Guinea only 2 things come to our mind: I) Whenever there is water, the possibility of finding new multicellular forms in aliens planets is unlimited. II) However there seems to be a rather common finding in them: the forging of a digestive system with its own brain sensori-reflex system. The other thing: ways to capture food (mouth, tentacles or successive rings, to move) is the accessory.

MITA AND IMPOVERISHMENT

According to MIT Economy PhD student Melissa Dell, the setting-up of mita (forced work in mines, together with their families), impoverished their participants coming from agrarian communities of the south of Peru and Bolivia. The line of an oval figure (andean norwest-southeast), contain a region of relative poverty surrounded by wealthier areas (non possessors of but natural resources). Dell, believes that the system of mita settled down by the conquerors (1573 - 1812), explains the results. Those that left their lands to work in mitas are but poor nowadays (Econometra: The Persistent Effects of Peru's Mining Mita). The mita was established when being discovered silver mines near Potosi, participating from 1573 but of 200 communities forced to provide every year 3% of adult men of Potosi and Huancavelica.

Dell, says that cities subject to mita harvested the same crops and had the same social characteristics. Today these areas produce 32% less than their neighbors, having many children with stunted growth. After 1573, non affected for the mita constituted big country properties with many workers and stable rights of property. With the time these big properties had big highways placing their products in diverse markets. Contrarily, the participants of the mita, had small parcels, without rights to property. The lack of highways obliged them to develop single agriculture of subsistence with scarce access to markets and poor education. Being depleted the mines in 1812, the mita disappeared.

The Persistent Effects of Peru’s Mining Mita).

TREATMENTS ONLINE

Abstracts from Scientific American
Technology promises rapid changes in the way of giving and receiving health care: I) Sharing health electronic information will give to the patients more power, said John Gomez (Eclipsys). It is access to laboratory tests, medical records, imaging and even to medical journals. It is customary now to share on Facebook, ultrasound pictures of babies, medical information and treatments. II) Now we have individualized medical information (MyChart program, Google Health) existing in USA, to this respect government aid. III) Some argues that this kind of customized information will make the patient to feel more committed to his health care, offering also the physician his best medical treatments. IV) However will be less visits to the doctor, a space that will be taken by nurses, physician assistants, with questions and explanations. Perhaps some patients become advisors or allies of physicians in the care of his health, although some do not fully understand data. Educate, inform and explain is the task. V) Hospitals are expected to more competitive, to attract more customers. When integrating genomics, health care will be highly individualized.

VI) It is expected to reduce the number of errors in medical records, and warnings of potential dangers. Expected are changes in attitudes to lifestyles, diet etc. Information will be individualized and portable. VII) Sure will occur robbery of health information as electronic records will have important data (genomic) (See: Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences). The solution to this problem would be the creation of anonymous records (International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems :ICD), with a series of algorithms and related codes. VIII) Maybe at some point the American FDA will regulate smart phones (Apps, online: HealthMap, iMedical Apps.com app), where some doctors make decisions, based on heart rate data, scans of organs, adverse effects of medications, interpretation of electrocardiograms, vital statistics, etc. IX) The traditional clinical trial will not be abandoned. The coming technology is aimed at young resident doctors.
TRATAMIENTO MEDICO ONLINE

IX) El juicio clínico tradicional no será abandonado.

ALTRUISM AND BUSINESS

Ernst Fehr, an economist of the University of Zurich aims at introducing altruism and compassion in business made by prominent European businessmen. A mammoth task because market economic theories are based on selfishness. Aided by the Dalai Lama, Fehr argues that man have selfish and altruistic genes. It's all about education and finding the good in us. The problem is that selfish increase, cooperation collapses, threatening world peace. One way to promote altruism among entrepreneurs is according to Fehr resort to Buddhism and meditation. Pictures or scenes of people suffering awake in businessman sympathy and compassion. People with compassion are more altruistic. Recently, the Stanford University has built the Brain Center for Compassion and Altruism Research, with participants of the stature of the Dalai llama, the economist Jeremy Rifkin and the researcher Frans de Waal. According to them it is better to cooperate than to attack each other.

NEGOCIOS Y ALTRUISMO

ANCIENT SNAKES

Blair Hedges (Penn State University) and Nicolás Vidal (Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris), have just discovered that species of snakes of reduced vision (blind), current inhabitants of the southeast african island of Madagascar, confused until recently with earth-worms (scolecophidians), existed since prehistoric times (160 million years), in Madagascar when this was even part of the continent Gondwana (Africa plus India). A molecular clock showed that scolecophidians inhabited Gondwana and that its initial diversification followed the division between East and West Gondwana (150 Ma). The ulterior evolution and dispersion of these blind snakes outside of Africa happened floating through the ocean and in earth following termites and ants and to populational isolation.

SERPIENTES PREHISTORICAS

INFORMAL SCIENTIFIC EDUCATION

The editorial of the last number of Nature sustains that in order to improve the education in USA, should extend outside of class rooms. Something that would go in opposition with the ideas of Obama, but worried to reinforce the current curriculums, dedicated exlusively to school environments. Researchers say that most scientific knowledge are acquired for the people outside of the school: TV programs, websites, articles of magazines, visits to zoological and museums, hobbies: gardening, care of birds, conforming an informal scientific education, difficult to measure, very effective, hardly needed of a modest investment. Since many years the NASA, National Science Foundation (NSF), Discovery and others exhibit TV special educational programs of great audience. Some problems exist :abundant surface informatión and a lot of available pseudoscience. Somebody with great analysis capacity could become specialist in any topic. But we need methodologies in order to evaluate the learning of scientific informal knowledge.

TISSUE ENGINEERED ORGANS

Although even lack a lot to travel, we don't doubt that organs manufactured by means of bioengineering will be better than many current human transplants, expensive and affected by immune rejection. Bioengineered organs will have less colateral effects, will be taylorized and will allow the rehearsal of new drugs. At the moment are manufactured skin, cartilages, bronchuses and blood vessels because they need few blood vessels. A liver or a kidney are bigger problems because: I) they need a dense net of capillaries. One works in developing new procedures to make grow new blood vessels to the inside and outside of organs. Ultrafine furrows in the interior of endothelial cells allows to create nets of capillary blood vessels. Combining muscle and endothelial cells in bioreactors containing flows of liquids allows to create big blood vessels. To the interior of human body the organ stimulates the angiogenesis; outside of the body the organ dies.

II) The addition of polymer nanoballs liberates in controlled form factors of growth that stimulate the growth of blood vessels. III) Stem cells of bone, muscle, skin, etc, are cultivated in order to be differentiated in the type cellular wanted over 3-D structures of support. To achieve the appropriate cellular type protein signals are used to achieve an uniform direction since embryonic cells can form tumors. They are also used induced stem cells. IV) Removing all cells, natural frames are formed. If to the remaining connective tissue are added fresh cells, it is formed a new organ. Employing pig’s heart connective structures it is possible to form a new heart. The structures can also be manufactured starting from thin polymeric fibers or hidrogels. On hidrogels it is possible to build cartilage and bone.

A novel system that involves the implant of big quantities of cells coming from islands of pancreas of pigs (micro-encapsulated in extracts of seaweed: alginate), in the abdomen of human diabetics type 1, threatens to revert the complications of this illness. The alginate avoids the detection and immune destruction. The procedure has received the approval of health australian authorities to carry out the phase II trials in humans. The procedure (Diabecell), driven by a neozeland company doesn't use antitransplant medication. The pilot test carried out in humans have verified that the implant diminishes hypoglycemic events, long term complications of hyperglycemia and daily necessities of insulin. To minimize the risks of illnesses transmitted by pigs, the company uses pigs maintained in isolation for but of 200 years coming from the neozeland island of Auckland.

NEW PHYSIC

Until finally after 16 years and 10 billion dollars invested, the LHC the but big collider of particles of the world, successfully achieved the collision among 2 beams of protons traveling almost to the speed of the light, to energies of 7 trillion electron volts (7 teraelectronvolts: 7 TeV), removing atomic subparticles whose analysis will allow -when energy of 14 TeV are reached- : 1) to discover the Boson of Higgs a particle that supposedly would have endowed from mass to all existent atomic subparticles 2) To corroborate the existence of extra space-time dimensions 3) Possibility to discover the graviton 4) To add speed (GRID system), to the current internet 5) Possibility to understand and to reconstruct the Big Bang 6) New lights around the laws of cosmos and microcosms 7) Discovery of new particles and new states of the matter 8) To clarify concepts around the dark matter that constitutes a ¼ of the current universe 9) To clarify the existence of supersimmetry according to which each particle has a supersimmétrical partner 10) To clarify the supposed asymmetry between matter and antimatter. Finally Dr. Modest Montoya from Peru. Why you or in their defect at least 2 Peruvian physicists are not in the CERN?

NUEVA FISICA
