HOW TO GENERATE HUMAN EGG CELLS

As postulated in 2005 by the biologist Jonathan L. Lilly: women are not born with a specific number of egg cells, there would exist rather a hidden reserve of stem cells (oogonian stem cells) in the bone marrow of all adult women, intended to become permanently in egg cells, as needed. Now, Tilly has extracted stem cells from ovaries of mice, that generated viable egg cells that were fertilized and were able to produce embryos. Tilly found the generated egg cells, identifying a particular protein lying on the surface of egg cells and sperm. The same procedure was subsequently applied with partial success to human ovaries of women in reproductive age coming from the Saitama Medical Center/Japan, with the intention of performing sexual reassignment caused by disorders of gender identity, giving rise to reproductive cells that produced immature egg cells, which when were injected in ovarian mice produced follicles and structures that formed mature egg cells, some of which had a unique set of chromosomes. With this, the possibility that a single young woman over all her reproductive life span (20 years), could give birth to 400 000 related human beings and that any infertility case can be successfully treated is open. It is also hoped that this work helps to understand how drugs and nutrition affect egg cells.

Futuristic neuroscience

Within the planned revolutions for the next 10 years: nanotechnology, stem cell use, personalized medicine and brain changes, the latter applied to humans, is which are expected to generate significant cognitive changes, ethical, legal and moral controversies, while most humans only expected benefits and improvements in the treatment of many brain and mental diseases. I) Someone could brainwash many people and make them their slaves. Soldiers with brain connections linked to weapons systems and drones. Workers for life, fans to demand, etc. II) According to the report of the Royal Society (England Academy of Sciences), soon will be possible to stimulate the brain to accelerate learning.

III) It shall be possible to design new drugs that will improve performance, make speak the captives or plunging them into deep sleep. IV) Not to mention to transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), which conducts electrical signals through the skull to improve many skills (placing bombs, snipers vision and others). With this technique, the accuracy is doubled. However, many wonder : if you control a mentally a drone and if a bomb falls in a population who's the culprit: the armament’ system or the man?. V) The reading of the EEG (electroencephalogram), will analyze brain waves (biofeedback) to improve the skills of soldiers, archers and professional golfers. EEG records, will select images for closer inspections. VI) It is anticipated the use of brain scan to select faster learning human beings during recruitment.

EVOLUTIONARY ADVANTAGE OF ZEBRA’S STRIPES

Susanne Akesson (Lund University/Sweden), Gábor Horváth (Hungary) and others have conducted experiments in optics and insect feeding on a farm near Budapest populated with horses and sucking blood horseflies. According to the researchers, black and white stripes of zebras will serve as camouflage, hiding them from hungry lions and tigers and also to ward off horseflies, more eager to blood horses of a unique color. The study examined the attraction of horseflies to different types of panels crossed by black and white stripes of varying width. According to Akesson, horseflies are attracted to horizontally polarized light, because this phenomenon will help them to identify aquatic stretches where to copulate and leave their eggs. The arrangement of zebra stripes (especially white), prevents the polarized light to be reflected. The more narrow white stripes, the less likely to attract horseflies, conferring an evolutionary advantage to zebras.

THE INMUNE SYSTEM

The case of the Russian immunologist M. Medzhitov (Yale University/Howard Hughes M. Institute), is instructive; you wins, if you're hungry. While in Russia Medzhitov dreamed of doing great discoveries in biology -impossible task- due to lack of facilities in Russia in bankruptcy. However he read by chance in 1992 at the Moscow State University, an article written by the American immunologist Charles A. Janeway Jr. (1943-2003), which proposed a theory about how the immune systems work in vertebrates. It is known that birds, vertebrates and others are protected against infection by two immune systems: the innate and the adaptative (owned only by vertebrates and of recent evolution). The innate system after detecting the invading microbes guides the adaptative immune system to fight the intruder germ.

After sending an email to Janeway, Medzhitov traveled to Yale to work with him. To discover in innate immune system cells the gene that activates the adaptive immune system response took both of them, 2 years. Toll like receptor gene was found to be important in the induction of immunity and inflammation. Shortly was discovered the gene responsible for the onset of septic shock. It was the same gene Toll reported a year before that caused the induction of immune and inflammatory responses. Last year, Nature published a letter signed by 26 top scientists seeking the Nobel Prize for Charles A. Janeway and M. Medzhitov. Without words.
