Robots almost humans.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caty27Fe1_o

The Dra. Lola Cañamero of the University of Hertfordshire, leader of Feelix Growing Project has before her a great project : to build robots that learning from humans will be capable of being related appropriately social and emotionally with them. By suddenly it is studied to condition in robots in development, the imprinting (baby robots that follow and imitate the first object that they see like human mothers). Feelix Growing, is a project headed by british that involves 6 countries, 25 robotists, development psychologists and neuroscientifics. According to Cañamero, the learning was given by means of emotional and tactile feedbacks received from humans, with positive reinforcements (kind words, correct conduct, aid to robots, etc), processed by videocameras, audios, sensors that narrow the distance among robots and humans. Initially facial bosses and human movements will be prioritized, adapted to neural artifical networks gotten into focus in baby robots that grow and help humans in their daily works. It is expected that artificial neural networks be capable of being adapted to constant changes, detecting human inputs of conduct, voice, movement, in which the observational learning adopted initially stunning emotions in robots (ire, happiness, solitude). Other participants in this project are: Center National of the Recherche Scientifique, Universite of Cergy Pontoise, Ecole Polytechnique Federate of Lausanne, University of Portsmouth, Institute of Communication and Computer Systems, Greece, Entertainment Robotics, Denmark and BE Aldebaran Robotics, France.

We believe that the aproximation is wrong and alone will serve to do but visible the conceptual error, because splits of an imitative external base and not from internal, own robot development. For us the interaction with humans and the environment should be given from a long-term plan that consider as a great goal the recognition on the part of the robots its own internal ego, that permit to differentiate the good thing of the evil in a general sense by their own, effect to be reached when the robots will possess powerful multimedia mechanisms in their CPUs. Then the emotions will be alone good or bad things, collateral effect.

Robots casi humanos.

Chajrauma.

Several photos extracted from sports page peruvian magazines (to see The Trome 01/01/2007), showed the shaved scalp of the player Jose Mendoza Zambrano, steering wheel of the Sporting Cristal (Premier League of Football of Peru) exhibiting a series of pads of his scalp separated by furrows or plicatures, similar to land tilled (chajrauma in quechua). We advance that the player should have a father or a mother of aymara or quechua ancestry, in the meantime the 50% of Peruvians native resident in Puno of quechua or aymara origin possess this total or partly genetic characteristic. For us chajrauma is a genetic adaptation tending toward dissipating the side effects of solar rays of great altitude (over 3500 m above sea level). Histologically these areas exhibit hypertrophy of conjunctive tissue, condensed around hairy foliculles and sebaceous glands (to see: Medicina Prehispánica Peruana: Capitulo : Dermatologia Prehispánica).

Clean energy fron organic wastes

The Chinese government has determined to promote the drilling of more producing pits of gas methane (originating in areas with high concentration of organic wastes thank to the action of certain germs), capable to generate clean energy clean, envirommental protection of rural western areas (high producers of grains). The methane generated in the pits is pumped to hundreds of rural houses where is employed in cooking, to generate heat, electric light and to eliminate completely eggs of Schistosoma, Estreptococcus suis (hogs). Wei Ciao' vice minister of Agriculture, said that the Chinese government will give subsidies from 100 to 1200 dollars by each pit and for each house. The gas methane is employed in China since 1970. At the end of the 2005 18 m of rural families had pits of methane. For the 2010 it is expected that they have them 50 m of people using methene. It is a matter of pits of 8 feet cubics, capable to produce 80% of the energy of a house of 4 members.

Continous replicant teeth.

Der Spiegel Courtesy:1) Above: dental embryo technique 2)Lower:Embryo dental mouse nodule.
The news are encouraging, for million of people who lose their teeth because of decay or diverse diseases. A group of Japanese investigators led by Takashi Tsuji of the University of Tokyo, extracted dental nodules of embryos of mice, separated ectodermic and mesenchymal cells, letting them grow separately (cultures), returning them to unite after adding to them collagen gel generating multiple dental nodules. Soon they made jaw cuts in which they implanted the generated nodules, forming perfect teeth in 14 days. Tsuji, predicts that the technique also will be successful in humans (Nature Methods).

Bionic eyes.

BIONIC EYE TECHNOLOGY
1: Camera on glasses views image
2: Signals are sent to hand-held device
3: Processed information is sent back to glasses and wirelessly transmitted to receiver under surface of eye
4: Receiver sends information to electrodes in retinal implant
5: Electrodes stimulate retina to send information to brain

A team of American investigators, led by Mark Humayun, of the University of California, have perfected a video-camera of 1 mm square (60 megapixels) that after capturing environmental images, send them to a processor unit located in the belt of people with difficulties to see. From there, the images are returned to the video-camera, of where they are send as electric (wirelessly) signals to receivers (electrodes), implanted and mixed with healthy retinal cells that finally send the signals to the brain. Approximately 1.5 million people in the world suffer of retinitis pigmentosa and 1 of each 10, older than 55 years suffer of macular degeneration because of the age. In both cases, the retinal cells processing of the light die gradually. According to Humayun(Doheny Retina Institute), the bionic eye will allow these patients to see.

OJOS BONICOS.

Parallel worlds

Our universe is for the German physic David Deutsch only one of many parallel infinite universes. What seems absurd to the common people incites Deutsch to accuse them of ignore the objective reality. Deutsch, one of those but illustrious representatives of the theory of the multiverses (multiple universes that exist and we don't see), works at the moment in the Center of Computation of the University of Oxford.

Question: Mr Deutsch, You affirms that a parallel universe exists not furrowed by comets for 60 million years. Are you sure of it?
Deutsch: Completely.
Question: Are there dinosaurs in other universes that survive and evolve toward intelligent beings?
Deutsch: Sure.
Question: Then many universes exist.
Deutsch: It finds it of the quantum theory, a fundamental area of the physics. The deduction of the existence of many and different universes is not mine. It is known for 50 years, having been published for the first time by Hugh Everett.
Question: Where are the other universes?
Deutsch: I respond analogically to this question, always mentioning to a certain universe. For example I live in Oxford and you not. Then we are referring to different places of the same universe. Now wonder to yourself, (without fear to make a mistake) if you would like to leave your universe and try to introduce in our (another), universe.
Question: then like we can imagine them?
Deutsch: It is better to begin of the other side. According to the quantum theory the physical reality consists of things but big that the total of the things that we know or we see. The reality is a very big thing and it is better to call it multiverses. It has regions that function autonomously… behaving in a different way.
Question: Are you saying that all we could exist in many of these universes?...In which of these universes could we find you?.

2-Technology Review.

Mundos paralelos

Deutsch: Seguro.
Pregunta: Entonces existen muchos universos..

How the brain process faces

Above: Drawings Courtesy of NYT.
The neuroscientist Doris Tsao of the University of Bremen/Germany says that the brain processes the faces in specific and high-priority form, seeming a cerebral area dedicated to the recognition of these, exist. In their investigations, Dra. Tsao uses resonance magnetic functional to identify cerebral activated areas while it stimulated monkeys with expensive, fruits and other structural patterns, discovering groups of activated cells related with the identification of expensive, in 3 regions of the temporary lobe. The cerebral areas that identified faces sometimes identified non-faces structures like faces. "If non-faces structures arrive to certain threshold the cells that process it recognizes them as faces (case of certain groupings of clouds).

For their side, Pawan Sinha, cognitive scientific of MIT has developed a software capable to identify the faces of potentials terrorist. For it he feed his PC with hundred of varied faces, discovering certain common relationships among them: the eyes and the mouth are always but dark that the forehead and cheeks respectively. With 12 of these characters, it is possible to identify faces although they were of low resolution (with images of 12 x 14 pixels 75% of one face is recognized). Like a PC, the brain processes the faces in a holistic form but that for individual discoveries. The non-faces structures sometimes assume the position of faces : Jesus Christ, face in 3D in the region of CydoniaMars, etc. It seems that facial recognizing seat deeply in our cerebral architecture, says: Takeo Watanabe, a neuroscientist of the University of Boston. After being bombarded by stimuli the brain perceive them continuosly although they are no longer seen, what grants advantage of survival (to be but sensitive to faces of wild animals and to escape). For Dr. Sinha, is beneficent to see faces and not to be so rigid in its recognition patterns.

Advanced aesthetic: Natural female breast using stem cells.

Japanese scientists that at the moment lead the introduction of advanced techniques of aesthetic body improvement, have been able to increase in natural form the size (2 sizes), of female human breasts using a mixture of autologous fat (own, obtained by liposuction of the thigh or stomach) and fat stem cells. The mixture is injected little by little, layer by layer in each breast in order to obtain a diffuse distribution of the transplanted fat. The lipoinyection is carried out with fine (1 mm) needle, so the incisional scars are imperceptible. The method is priced of being permanent and superior to implants of silicone, saline solution or bovine collagen that sometimes originate seudotumors for calcification, fibrosis or necrosis, forms cysts, leakage or, condition autoinmmunes illnesses or infections. Kotaro Yoshimura of the school of medicine of the University of Tokyo, affirms to have tried with success to but of 40 patients. For their side, doctors of Cellport Clinic Yokohama, the first one approved by the Japanese government, assure that treated breasts shine soft and natural, without displacement or asymmetry.

Sleep deprivation and health

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ePvdbNJuXLA

Many wonder so what serves to sleep and how many hours of dream are advisable. Investigations carried out in the last years confirm that at least for certain people (the subjected to high levels of daily strés), being awake is equal to be sick and sleeping to recover the health. It is that for many to sleep little or to get up early, it is equal to suffer of bad mood, headaches, to segregate high levels of hormone of the strés (cortisol, corticosterone) that affects to the heart, the levels of glucose, etc making but prone to these people to acquire diabetes, hypertension, depression, heart diseases, etc. To sleep little (at least in rats), promotes the scarce formation of cerebral new cells especially in the hippocampus with what certain brain cognitive functions deteriorate, according to a work led by Elizabeth Gould and collaborators (PNAS). Also it is known that the deprivation of the dream bears to an acceleration of the ageing and to acquire similar cognitive defects to that exhibited for chronic trinkers.
Sueño=salud. Vigilia=enfermedad, para ciertas personas.

Action videogames :good for our eyes

We have written in several opportunities that we participate of the physiologic maxim that settles down that: "the function makes to the organ." Who uses the sense from the view to the maximum will have advantage in this aspect on other humans. There they are like test the German race driver Michael Schumacher (world champion of F - 1) who managed child´s karts, adapting from early age their eyes to cerebral diverse circuits and now to myriad of children from all over the world training with active video games. With security Schumacher and these children, will suffer abundance of nervous circuits in certain cerebral areas, the same ones that could be inheritable after several generations, which in fact will be beneficial. We emphasize this because now a team of the University of Rochester led by the professor Daphne Bavelier, after studying to 2 groups of students a) one that saw daily action videogames (Unreal tournament, Halo, etc), during several months and other b) that saw videogames less active, concluded that those that saw action videogames, improved their vision 20% according to the usual tests that routinely the oculists carry out. Evolutionarily, the eyes were one of the pillars of the cerebral development. The action videogames take the visual system to their limits, as long as the cerebral circuits are adjusted it, interacting in turn with many activities of daily life, Bavelier says. The scientist assures that these results will be part of a new way of ocular treatment.

Seeds: Norway Noah´s Ark.

Foto tomada de : Elpais.es.

In order to protect the genetic agricultural diversity in front of the diversity of climatic changes, the Norwegian (4 500 000 inhabitants) government, hopes to build among the 2007/08, a camera of armored security that housed 3 million of seeds from all over the world (with all the vegetable arable varieties). The camera to be dug up to 120 meters in the heart of a mountain and 130 m above the sea level is located at little distance of the North Pole, in the Norwegian archipelago of Svalbard. The gray brain of the project is the executive director of Global Crop Diversity Trust, Cary Fowler whose foundation will cofinance the construction of the camera and will pay the trasport of the seeds from its origins until the arctic archipelago. It is expected that the increase of the temperature of the air will affect little to the permafrost (permanently frozen layers of ice located in the superficial levels of the floor of very cold regions or periglaciars), that surrounds to the camera.

Light to matter conversion and viceversa.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QxbutNmaL-s

American researchers were able to disappear a beam of light, making it reappear in another side, using as slowers 2 clouds of atoms of sodium, separated 1 mm, among them. A light pulse stopped and extinguished in one box is revived from a completely different box in a separate location and sent back on its way. In the actual experiment, a slow light pulse was stopped and stored in one Bose–Einstein condensate (the first 'box'), then revived from a different condensate, 160 μm away. Information was transferred by converting the optical pulse into a travelling matter wave more amenable to manipulation than light. In this case, a first beam of light was thrown against a cloud of atoms of sodium, where after being captured (conversion of light in matter), left a cast of light inside the atoms. A second laser sent to a second near cloud of atoms of sodium, revived the original pulse recapturing the speed of the light with the same form and longitude of wave of the original although something weakened. It is believed that these experiments will allow an experimental bigger control of light and matter: dispositives of optic storage, quantum but quick and powerful computers. Instead of optic fibers, boxes full with wires and/or chips : data and images will be read directly of the light. The quantum procedure exploits the properties of the matter supercooled: Bose Einstein Condensation (under conditions near to absolute zero, a great fraction of atoms with spin 1 :bosones, collapses and condensed (superatoms), thanks to states of lowest quantum effect emerging to macroscopic scale). It was predicted by A. Einstein (1925), based on statistical works of photons carried out by the hindu S.N. Bose. Already in 1990 a team of Harvard had achieved slowed the speed of the light from 299,792km/s to 61km/h, using as controls, clouds of atoms of sodium (light was caught in the vacuum, to temperatures a little above the zero absolute: -273 Celsius).

The new synchroton of Oxfordshire (UK).

The beginning of the construction of a modern synchrotron (cyclic accelerator of elementary particles equipped with a magnetic field and another electrical one, to turn aside and to accelerate particles in synchronous form), located in Oxfordshire/UK, marks a landmark in certain british scientificas areas. The Synchroton (Diamond Light Source), to being finished in 30 years, put England at the level of China, USA and France in the matter of investigation in hard sciences, at the same time that opens the doors to UK to diverse businesses. The electrons sent to the interior of a small accelerator (linac), reach the speed of the light, after connecting themselves to a circle magnetic accelerator. The energy (photons), lost during the deviation of electrons, emerges like rays of light highly focused, allowing to delineate and to draw the matter on atomic scale, working actually like true electron microscopes. The Synchrotón of 562.6m of diameter will cost 450 million dollars and will be administered by Central The Laboratory of the Research Councils (CCLRC) and the Wellcome Trust of England. Gerhard Materlik, executive head of Diamond, said: "we have an ample rank of investigation projects that go from the cancer to the storage of data of certain mysteries of the Solar System. Chris Binns, physic of the University of Leicester said:" we are in the search of methods to construct new magnetic materials to assemble new types of nanoparticles. We need to understand the magnetic structure to nanoscale. Dave Stuart, structural biologist of the University of Oxford, tried to investigate with this light, the protein molecular structure of certain cancerous humans cells.

National Clinical records database.

In some modern countries, the concept has been developed that the current system of hospital clinical files (CF), written in paper, is obsolete. Although we participate of the idea of to computerize CF and to universalize them, we say that CDs (compact disks) that contains all patient´s medical information (including pictures or videos of illnesses or diagnostic procedures), should be to disposition and in being able to of each person or patient. The hospital should have a copy of the same one. To any national online system of CF, alone should be sent information allowed by the patient who should be entitled to veto information strictly personal. Who better than the own patient to take care and to enlarge their own HC, had bill that the data stored in hospitals can get lost, to stray or (if there are legal problems) to be sold to insurance companies or other interested ones. The main advantage of having basic online data is its easy accessibility in emergency situations. In England they plan to put online, CF of 50 million people. At the moment, a pilot is developed there with 150 people who are instructed of possible errors being expected with the time to connect 3000 general practitioners with 300 hospitals. The main objective in this case, is to have access to the past clinical record from a patient to the brevity avoiding unnecessary repetitions or duplicity of diagnoses. The main fear in a national system of data, is the loss of confidentiality. Hence sensitive data (abortions, HIV), are not stored online now, alone basic data (allergies, reactions to medications, blood groups), are published. Those that promote that absolutely all the information of the patients must be stored and published in a national system of data assure that it is possible to create very sure crypto-passwords or, have sealed letter to be open alone in cases of emergency.

Preventive health since fertilization.

The appearance of a new book (Peter Gluckman and Mark Hanson : Developmental origins of health and disease), is generating controversy in the high spheres of health of most countries, specially in the most developed. It has to do with new concepts around the origin and development of the health and disease. The book takes shelter from many previous works, made in the embryonic and fetal stage in humans and animals, considering that diverse intra and extrauterine environmental factors (mother), condition certain diseases (low weight when being born conditioning: diabetes, strokes, hypertension, coronary arterial disease etc), of adulthood. The presence of stored clinical files in certain hospitals helped the construction of the book with which it was possible to correlate diseases of adult individuals with their respective weights when being born. The association seems to sustain itself in the fetal plasticity (phenomenon by which a genotype can give rise to different morphologic or physiological states in answer to different environmental conditions during the development). With it, a new vision of optimal development of the human being is developed who aims to prevent negative effects for the health in the short and long term. Now it will be emphasized in a new type of preventive medicine to begin from the same moment of the fertilization.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXGucGtgWcs

Researchers of the American Company Ravgen Inc's, led by Ravinder Dhallan, developed a blood test (treated with formaldehyde, that selects abundant fetal dna) , extracted of gestating mothers (first trimester of the pregnancy. Lancet, Journal of the American Medical Association). After extracting and processing samples of blood treated with formaldehyde the investigators found that these contained an average of 20.2% of fetal adn, compared with 7.7% of not treated samples. Fetal previous tests: fetal sonography, amniocentesis, biopsy of coriónic villous, blood of the umbilical cord are effective but also invasive and dangerous. According to Alan Cameron, consulting obstetrician of Queen Mother Elizabeth Hospital from Glasgow, all that one can make at the moment in sure and non invasive form is to identify blood fetal groups. Alastair Kent, director of Genetic Interest Group, said that it is a notable advancement that will give arguments to the gestating ones to decide on important aspects of their pregnancies.

Procedimientos médicos fetales no invasivos.

Human peruvian rabies transmitted by vamps.

11 children younger than 6 years coming from native communities of the north forest of Peru (Huambiza-Aguaruna. County of Condorcanqui), next to the frontier with Ecuador died from rabies after being bitten by bat-vampires (Chyróptera), possibly of the species: Desmodus rotundus. Luis Suárez, general director of the department of Epidemiology of the Ministry of Health of Peru, said to Reuters that was about 2 buds happened in different places. In the last 2 months a total of 1.101people were bitten in this area, having received most their respective antirábic vaccines coming from Argentina and Ecuador. The vampires--that only live in Latin America-- consume bovine or human blood when they are sleeping. At the moment 2.500 people (of a total of 10 000) are exposed to this type of bites in amazon rural peruvians areas. The hematophages vampires bite to humans, when they opened new agricultural rural frontiers, occur retirement of their livestock, vulnerable housings persist, there are little access to services of health and small amazonic towns are inhabited by humans.

Total Human Genome Sequence :To $ 1000 dollars.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=81d4HALbjyc

The sequence of the equivalent of a human genome at a cost of $1,000 dollars has been announced as a goal to the interior of the community of geneticists. New technologies suggest that this possibility, exists. With such a reason Nature Genetics, supported by Applied Biosystems, carries out the question of the year to prominent geneticists: What would make you if this technique was already available?.

Axel Meyer (University of Konstanz): It would bear to a democratization of the genetic code. At the moment few advanced centers of genómic exist. We would not lose time collecting data like now, but rather carrying out interpretations. It will be useful in Pharmacogenómic, allowing personalized medical treatments and contributing data to insurance companies. With this technique, evolutionary aspects of many species would be studied.

David Goldstein (Duke University):
We would know much of functional genetic variations, allowing the setting-up of personalized diets and medications with minimum colateral effects. We would study certain human genetic variations better, have a better understanding of memory, behavior, personality. We would know more around who we are and toward where we go.

David Gurwitz (Tel Aviv University): We would have a better understanding of the hereditary factors that condition certain pharmacogenétic reactions securing bigger security and effectiveness. According to the Center of Control of the Illnesses (CDC), 6.7% of people hospitalized in USA, are because of reactions to drugs.

Detlef Weigel (Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology):
We would study with more easiness the way certain traits and sequences vary along the years in different species, identifying the genes that allow us to adapt to adverse circumstances.

Richard Gibbs (Baylor College of Medicine): It would make difficult choices easier. In humans we would prioritize studies of more cohorts with phenotypes of importance, accelerating the alelle discovery, adding significant numbers of populational controls in order to get a better understanding of normal variation. This would put the genetics in a new orbit. We would study better the project Cancer Genome Project... an urgent necessity....

Trudy Mackay (North Carolina State University): I would study the first 500 genomes of Drosophila melanogaster, a true treasure that has survived to the natural selection and has very important and complex features necessary to understand the human health as well as adaptative evolution. We will know how many genes are associated to show specific variations. We would add data to the computer for predictable genes. We would reply the same genotypes in enviromment controlled conditions, achieving in this way, a power without precedents to detect variants.

Francis S. Collins (National Human Genome Research Institute): A serious appropriate question would be : What should we not make?. The technique will be good to improve the human health. A great objective would be to sequence 75 000 human genomas included amomg them 2500 of sick of asthma, diabetes, stroke, Alzheimer, arthritis, cancer, depression, which would permitt us to identify the genetic variations of these illnesses. Also would be appropriate to sequence 25 000 genomas of people that has passed the 100 years enjoying good health and independence.

Stephen J. O'Brien (National Cancer Institute): I) I would obtain the sequence of 38 species of cats in order to monitor the past, the present and the future of the genomic diversity of this species, like enclosed handling for the conservation of species II) I would look for to identify the changes that happened among species with the radiation of Felidae. I would sequence the genomas of species in extinction danger to preserve the genomic instructions of species that are extinguished to reconstruct them in the future. I would sequence 375 genomas of primates to know from which the Homo sapiens derives.

Evan Eichler (University of Washington):
I) I would sequence 1000 genomes of individuals of diverse geographical regions to understand the normal genetic variation better, inside our species II) secuenciaria and it would compare genomas of patient with retard mental idiopático and of their relatives to identify novo mutations III) secuenciaria geomas of all the species of primates and mammals to reconstruct each couple's of bases evolutionary history IV) he/she would obtain the complete sequence of but of 100 germinal cells to have a better idea of the procesos of novo mutation.

Jonathan Pritchard (University of Chicago): It would have a great impact in medical genetics. We would identify systematically strange genes in of novo mutations. It would have great impact impact in the biology of the organisms and in genómics differences among species.

David Goldstein (Duke University):

Detlef Weigel (Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology):

Ewan Birney (European Bioinformatics Institute):

Leonid Kruglyak (Princeton University):

Trudy Mackay (North Carolina State University):

Evan Eichler (University of Washington):
