PERUVIAN PREHISPANIC :SECHIN BAJO

The discovery of rectangular/circular ceremonial places -some sunken- built with stone and mud bricks, in the mountains of Casma (Sechin Bajo/3500 BC by carbon dating), by the archaeologists: Peter R. Fuchs, Renate Patzschke (Lateinamerika-Institut, Freien Universität Berlin, and his team), Jesus Briceño Rosario and others, suggests a renewed series of theories about ancient Peruvian population and its thought: I) The discovery calls for an early development of Peruvian pre-Hispanic civilizations in the mountains rather than on the Peruvian coast, because there the first hunter-gatherers found better livelihoods (camélids and others), more suited to their technology column (arrows, knives, etc.).
II) The first Asian migrants (hunter/gatherers), carried a cultural baggage strongly linked to life after death (burial of dead with objects, dyes and even food), evidenced by the finding of multiple niches. In their minds full of magic panteist primitive conceptions (snakes/cats, etc.), to meet the challenges of nature, it was easy to add it others : construction of ceremonial centers with binders people purposes of mutual aid and conquer. III) The existence of childlike drawings (geometric), indicates that the acquisition of perspective's drawing (proximity and remoteness of objects) is a mental process, acquired through culture, after a long time.

BILL GATES :HIS FIGHT AGAINST THE MALARIA

Left: Spaniard Researcher Dr. Pedro Alonso.
The biggest merits of Bill Gates, will not be his innovations in software global needs. We foresee, that his greatest achievement -for which he will be remembered- will be one in which he and his wife Melinda, are working feverishly :a Foundation whose goal number one, is the eradication of malaria globally (which kills 1 million Africans every year, of which 90% are children under age 5, living in the african SubSahara). To that end his Foundation has injected to a conglomerate of scientific institutions: $ 380 million dollars, to a total of $ 1 billion that already has the Herculean undertaking. The attack against malaria is carried by his most obvious side: immunization of children under 12 months, against Plasmodium Falciparum. We dream of someday, to fit the genomes of human blastocyst of 32 cells, with antigens against all endemic infections and infestations worldwide.

The vaccine chosen (RTS, S), consists of a recombinant protein that merge a portion of the circunsporozoit protein of P. Falciparum, with a surface antigen of hepatitis B virus, generating production of antibodies and white blood cells, diminishing the ability of the parasite to infect, to survive and develop in the human liver, as well as stimulating a protective immune response against the virus Hepatitis B. The vaccine developed since 1987 by GSK (Glaxo Smith Kline) and worked in children by experts from the University of Barcelona (Dr. Pedro Alonso), proved successful in 2002, when tracks realized showed protection for 6 months. Since 2005, it is known that the protection is more durable (18 months). Currently, 1442 african children (Tanzania), under 12 months receive 3 doses in order to asses the safety, immunogenicity and efficacy of the vaccine, which so far reduces episodes of severe malaria, up to 50% of times.

MERGING of HUMAN and NANOBOTS

Today finish the meeting (February/14-18/2008), organized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science /Boston/USA, one of the most important scientific events of the year in America. As expected within the 18 guests invited, were thinkers like Craig Venter (hated and loved. One of the most innovative scientists in the field of biology/genetics), the founder of Google: Larry Page, Ray Kurzweil, a free thinker, inventor, futuristic with solid arguments, who said during his lecture that : 1) small robots (nanobots, which would enter through blood human capillaries and interact directly with our neurons), implanted in our brains, will make us more intelligent. 2) machines and human will merge through devices implanted in the body to improve our intelligence and health. 3) that we already have the hardware and software necessary to achieve (2029), artificial intelligence, similar to the human, including their emotional aspects. 4) We are already a machine/civilization that uses technology to expand their physical and mental horizons.

TYPE II DIABETES: UNEXPECTED RESULTS

Great debate and controversy originate these days, the results of some scientific studies conducted on a large scale, in type II diabetics. I) On one side: "Effect of a Multifactoral Intervention on Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes." Danish Clinical Trials (last issue of NEJM), in which a group of Type II diabetics (out of 160 patients), followed by 14.3 years, had fewer cardiovascular events and deaths when glucose levels remained close to normal healthy people, used intensively multiple drug and continued to change behavioral patterns, following different ways from groups that were not adhered to these regulations II) On the other hand, an American study (proposed by The Heart, Lung and Blood Institute and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases), conducted in 10000 Type II diabetics, for 13 years, in which contrary to the results of the work mentioned above, type II diabetics who had blood glucose levels close to those of healthy people, exhibited more cardiovascular deaths than that people that followed rules and controls more lax. To surprise of many of us the tracking of these patients has been suspended (!we demand an explanation).

In spite of the output in the first study, we think hypothetically that in chronic diabetic patients, although the high level of glucose, conditioned known chronic complications, at the same time conditions significant changes in the total body homeostasis of diabetics. It is as if the body is to accommodate to a new level of glucose to function relatively better. This means that 120 or 130 mg/100 ml glucose, would be better, offset by the adverse effects of a lack of insulin or the difficulty of proper utilization of glucose. Trying to equalize the levels of glucose in normal people, is a contradiction because this approach, did not change their homeostasis. The approach of treating type II diabetics, should vary. The issue is not restoring only the sugar level to normal, but to match altered homeostasis of diabetics with appropriate levels of sugar (as custom), using self transplantation of stem cells and releases insulin guided by appropriate answers of the diabetics themselves.
DIABETES TIPO II: RESULTADOS IMPREVISTOS
I) De un lado :”Effect of a Multifactorial Intervention on Mortality in Type 2 Diabetes”.

HUMAN BEING DEFINITION

When a year ago we wrote two articles on the definition of human beings, we opted for a clear proposal. A human being is formed, just after the fertilization (union of egg and sperm). Immediately, the randomly (crossover), mixing of genes generated genetic programs designed to form unique and unrepeatable humans (Einstein, Hitler, Newton, Mother Teresa, etc.). Reasons why we are opposed to any kind of abortions and irresponsible genetic manipulation. Robert P. George and Christopher Tollefsen have just launched a book ("Embryo. 2008. A defense of human Life. DoubleDay/USA), which argue that a human entity must have a development program (DNA and epigenetic factors), oriented to develop brain and central nervous system. For the authors, that kind of program begins with the fertilization. For that reason, they remain opposed to any manipulation or health risk to the embryo. This proposals however suffer has no adequate responses when it touches upon the eggs. You can get clones without sperm, just with a little electric encouragement to the egg to jump-start the machinery that will produce a clone. Unless we establish a new definition of fertilization (see NYT).

2008. A defense of human Life.

IMPROVING OUR USEFUL LIFE SPAN

A recent study ("Combined Impact of health sanitary behaviors and mortality in men and women :The EPIC-Norfolk. Prospective Population Study"), carried out by Kay-tee Khaw and his team, of the Medicine School of the University of Cambridge/England, provided solid elements to the well-known relationship: preventive medicine-improved health. The study scored 4 points to people that: a) Are physically active. Physical inactivity: Sedentary work or not to carry out recreational exercises. b) Does not smoke c) Ingest moderate alcohol :1-14 units (1 unit = 500 ml), a week of blond beer, 1-14 units (1 unit=250 ml), of wine or cider a week or 1-14 units (1 unit=50 ml) a week of whisky, gin, brandy, vodka, sherry, vermouth, etc. d) Ingest 5 servings of fruits and/or vegetables a day, exhibiting blood levels of 50 mmol/l or more of vitamin C. People that obtained 4 and 3 points, live 14 and 4 years but respectively that people that don't adopt none of these behaviors. The researchers arrives to these conclusions, after examining and following in prospective way to 20, 244 men and women among 45-79 years, without cardiovascular illness or cancer, among 1993-1997, living in general communities of England, until the 2006.

ALARGANDO NUESTRA VIDA UTIL.

NERVE BYPASSES

When a person is paralyzed from the waist down, due to an injury to his spinal cord (physical trauma, or impact of projectiles, etc), it is assumed that the injury is irreversible.Which change part of the lives of those affected. Apart from not walking, they suffer of urinary, skin and sex problems. To alleviate the condition many use wheelchairs simple or mobilized by mechanical energy or mechanical media. Lately, 2 therapeutic approaches are emerging as the best options for treating this disease: I) stem cell transplant from olfactory area, to motor areas of the spinal cord in order to re-grow neurons and restore the function of nerves in the spinal area injured and II) Another very simple, advocated by Dr. John Martin of New York/Columbia University, who argues that when a spinal cord is injuried the segments above the lesion, retain their anatómo/functional brain connection, while those located below the injury, but remain viable, are functionally disconnected from the brain. With this simple premise, Martin has begun to establish bypasses (in rats), with nerves located above the lesion linking it to neural areas located below the injured area of the spinal cord, noting 4 to 28 weeks (through anterógrad tracers) that nerve axons are regenerated in the ventral horn, intermediate zone and dorsal horn in normal hemiseccionated rats. Electrical stimulation of the proximal part of the nerve inserted (4 weeks later), evoked action potentials in the intermediate zone and the ventral horn. The estimulation of the nerve inserted also evoked contraction of muscles in the back and leg. The treated rats showed less spasticity and greater mobility of hip, knee, ankle and digits in the ipsilateral member. The axons of nerve inserted formed synapses in new motor circuits. As motor neurons of the nerve inserted continued to maintain its cerebral connections, these new circuits can restore voluntary control of muscles paralyzed below the injury.

THE ARGENTINEAN CONICET

Everyone knows that Argentina -40 years ago- was on the verge of becoming a first-world country. Interruptions of its democracy and some bad economic efforts, slowered the pace of this rich nation. Today, Argentine is recovering in some instances, especially in one: hard science (physics, chemistry, biology, etc.). To the remark: "By their fruits you shall know them," we add now, that in almost any global scientific research body the mark "research made in Argentina", sounds strong. Not for nothing Argentina is represented in hard science by : I) Bernardo Houssay (Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. 1947. Conditioned reflexes. II) Luis LELOIR. Nobel in Chemistry. 1970. Studies on carbohydrates III) Cesar MILSTEIN. Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine. 1984. Studying secreting antibodies cells, surpassing in the Spanish-speaking world to the powerful Spain that has only : I) Ramon y Cajal. Nobel P. And Medicine. 1906. Studies on nerve cells and II) Severo Ochoa de Albornoz. Nobel. Medicine and Physiology.1959. Studies in nucleic acids.

To the feat, achieved working on Argentine soil should be added the value of CONICET (National Council for Scientific and Technological Activities). Founded 50 years ago, the argentinian Conicet, looks today younger than ever. In it works now : 5216 researchers (average age: 37 years), 2700 technicians and 123 research centers (executing units) and publish :6000 annual works in specialized journals (nanotechnology, computer, earth sciences, mathematics, social sciences , ecology, biology, renewable energy, anthropology, geological resources, astronomy, molecular techniques, genetic, weather, Pansy Utopico, Paleoclimatology, oceanography, meteorology, anthropology, Inorganic Chemistry. Quantum Chemistry. Probiotics, vaccines, Philosophy, regional foods. Rays LASER , FIBERS OPTICIANS, Carcinogenesis, pests, insecticides, industrial crops in arid regions, Camelids, Ecology desert communities, maintenance of Patagonian sauries, sismostratigraphy, astrophysics, Statisticians studies, immune system, genomics, physics Plasma Physics, Theory of Nuclear Physic, Demography and society, Poverty and vulnerability, DECONTAMINACIÓN of WATER through SOLAR COLLECTORS OF LOW COST SOLAR, etc.).

The first President of Conicet: B. Houssay knew each researcher and followed closely the work of each, politics which is maintained until today. His level of excellence is maintained, because the assessments are fair and rigorous. Some areas were developed around eminent scientists of great prestige, but without being embedded in medium or long range plans. An important aspect of the Ejecutive Units of Conicet, is the highest productivity quali-quantitative achieved by linking them to universities campuses, where there are groups with appropriate critical mass. Another aspect is the training of highly qualified human resources according to international standards (doctoral thesis). Another aspect is the decentralization of Conicet (Buenos Aires, La Plata, Cordoba, Northwest, Northeast and Comahue), which operate on the basis of the following guidelines: a) common scientific objectives. b) minimum critical mass (7-10 investigators) c) Institutional relationship with universities d) Development Plan to 5 years, including the training of human resources.

In Conicet there is a current dominance of some disciplines (medicine) and neglect of others, like the obvious technological revolution in a country producer of food (as does Embrapa or Monsanto in Brazil or USA), environmental issues (climate change, fight against desertification and maintenance of biodiversity), impact of new technologies (nanotechnology, new materials), certain branches of engineering, oceanography, high-impact social issues (education, regional integration, migration, etc.) and the informatic revolution occurred in the past 15 years, which led to great facilities for transmission of information : almost instantaneously. A final problem in the Conicet is the poor physical infrastructure and the need of renewal of equipment (which is plenty in the Spanish CSIC).

WATER IN ENCELADUS

In February 2005, the American space probe Cassini, with the help of the Imaging Science Subsystem (ISS), took the photo seen at the bottomin which are visible cryovolcánic plumes (water vapour + particles of ice launched by geysers due to tidal forces because its proximity to Saturn), escaping of the outer rim of Enceladus (one of the 60 moons of Saturn. Diameter = 500 km. Young, surface, that reflect : 100 % of sunlight), placed near tiger stripes (linear fracture surfaces, located at the south satellite pole). Jürgen Schmidt and his team from the University of Potsdam, Germany, analyzed the pictures, noting speeds considerably lower for particles of ice, in relation to vapour, phenomena occurring below the satellite surface. A mathematical model showed that condensatión of particles of ice and its growth in channels of variable width subjected to continued collision and friction, explain the low speed of particles. Being the vapour close to the point of sublimation at temperatures lower than 260 K, it is able to withstand ice particles flows, suggesting the existence of liquid water below the south pole of Enceladus. Near the tiger stripes, were detected chemical processing and high temperatures.

PERUVIAN MARINE CONTAMINATION

A ship of the Peruvian Navy (BAP: Supe. ATP-157), that transported 1300 barrels of raw petroleum, burns and collapsed in front of Peruvian north coast (14 km, sea out), in Tumbes (end Peruvian north), 4 days ago, after seemingly suffering a short electric circuit. As a consequence, 13 people suffered serious burns, one of which died. Colaterally, the sea of Tumbes, was contaminated with the petroleum of at least 300 barrels. The remaining 1000 barrels collapsed with the ship and at this moment are pouring their content to the sea. As the Peruvian Navy from Peru, is part of the entities in charge of conserving the Peruvian environment we wonder if it is been worth that the Navy (BAP Supe, belongs to Peruvian Navy), be also judge in this misfortune. The consequences and damages of this contamination are big and somebody has to pay for it.

Was the Peruvian BAP Supe, prepared to gather and to transport 1300 barrels of petroleum?. Perhaps, yes, but by the light of the consequences, with all security it did lack the elementary norms of security for this task. When we speak of consequences we refer to eatable fish and prawns dead in polluted areas, swamps (manglares), and surrounding fauna about to be affected, tourism and trade equally affected. To the traditional contamination with lead of adjacent atmosphere of certain Peruvian mining seats and/or contamination of Peruvian rivers for mining wastes it is added now the marine contamination. As always the work of entities in charge of looking after a good conservation of Peruvian environment, leave a lot that to want. They act when the damage is done, owing on the contrary based their action in preventive strategies. In front of this type of accidents all Peruvian scientific entities (included Concytec and Peruvian Universities), must open a public debate with many proposals of for half. Queerly, they never say anything.
CONTAMINACION MARINA PERUANA
