MANIPULATED DREAMS.

According to Deirdre Barrett (How Artists, Scientists and Athletes Dreams for Uses Creative Problem-Solving-and How You Dog, Too) and others, it is possible to control dreams by means of novel technics that solve specific problems, eliminate nightmares, to dream to the interior of a dream and to know something of what others dream in real time. Until recently it was thought that during REM dream, participated mostly the brain cortex. Today it is accepted that the lower part of brain stem activate the cortex, that finally carry out a very organized work and with sense. It is known that depending on the type of dreams, certain regions (visual, motor and sensitive cortex), are but active, prevailing the visual effects. Other areas (prefrontal: logical reasoning and censorship), are less active during REM dream. Interesting thing is that during dreams, we continue thinking on daily problems giving them creative solutions because our logic is less linear that when we are awake and because frontal lobes in charge of censorship, are less active during dreams.

A way of solving problems during dreams is to represent them visually. During a dream, Kekule solved the structure of benzenic ring aligning atoms simulating a snake that volute on itself, bit its own tail. One technique is to think the problem having an image of it before going to bed and not jump from the bed when waking up, because we can get lost dream images. Some therapists create alternate wanted scenarios, closing the eyes and imagining them (Barry Krakow). One can dream to the interior of a dream (lucid dream), persuading the fellow that such a night certain dream will occur. But lucid dreams are not adapted to stop nightmares. You can influence the dreams by means of sensorial stimuli (auditory), although not so strong because they could wake up the person in study. Steve LaBerge uses flashes of red light directed to the face. If their patients to the awakening said they have seen red flashes, they are convinced of having had a lucid dream.

A titanium sensor of 3,4 cm of diameter implanted under the skin, able to monitor in permanent form tissue glucose’s concentrations by means of wireless telemetry, has been developed in pigs with eventual application in human diabetics. According to David Gough (University of California/San Diego), the sensor works continually (220 and 520 days), in diabetic and non diabetics pigs. The sensor detects the glucose by means of enzymatic electrodes that detect electrochemical differences of oxygen. The sensibility of the sensor is discreetly limited by its encapsulation, variations in local vascular perfusion, enzymatic inactivacion, limited readiness of oxygen, etc. The small differences observed between blood and tissue glucose are the result of transfer of glucose from blood to the tissues.

PRECAMBRIAN PERIOD

Dickinsonnia precambrian fossil
A great query after the discovery of great number and variety of animal fossil remains of impregnated in the surface of Burgess Shale’s rocks (530 million years b.C), was to know if these alive forms emerged of sudden or were as Darwin predicted product of a progressive evolution. Disconcerting until 35 years ago was the fact that there had not been precambrian fossil remains, in spite of an intense search in remote areas of Australia, the desert of Namibia, shore of northern Russia, etc. Recently the brilliant Chinese paleontologist Jun-Yuan Chen (Nanjing Institute of Geology and Paleontology), shocked the scientific world arguing that his research in rocks on Maotianshan Shale in central Yunnan, southern China, proved the emergency of sudden -without intermediate forms- of diverse metazoan phylum and subphylum body plans in Cambrian sea waters. Some Cambrian species (ctenophores, priapulids, sipunculans, arrow worms, tunicades, linguloids, etc), according to Jun-Yuan Chen, changed a little. Contrarily the superphylum Panarthropoda evolves forming novel body plans in short periods of time, being changed the location of head-appendixes, grasp organs, forge of vertebrate brains, etc.

The recent discovery of Precambrian fossil remains with new animal forms (Dickinsonia, pteridium, archaespius, fractofusus, kimberella, pixel, sprigina, vacorina, etc), gives a radical overturn to this problem, favoring Darwin. Dickinsonia, a relative of current jellyfish lacks mouth and anus, being a perfect Precambrian transitional animal. Some very flat animals seem to have been fed by osmosis with nutritious coming from marine beds. Other, with bilateral body symmetry could be until our predecessors. Kimberella, is a possible mollusk ancestor. The best current explanation for the emergency of this apparently sudden animal complexity, seems to be related with the ascent of levels of atmospheric oxygen that in Precambrian times hardly constituted 63% of current levels.

REGISTRO FOSIL PRECAMBRIANO

BRAIN SHARED INFORMATION

Drawing, courtesy of PNAS

After analyzing brain images obtained by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), registering simultaneously the brain activity of 2 people during a verbal natural communication, Greg Stephens (Princeton University), argues that if the sustained conversation is interesting and understood by both (speecher-listener), the independent brain processes disappear, being replaced for a combined activity of expression and understanding of the language that allows to share information. According to Stephens, temporal-space brain activity of the listener is coupled to that of the speaker with a slight time retard. Activity that disappears if both fail in communicating. It seems that this process uses the same neural networks in both brains, being possible listener’s neuron-mirror participation. Being that listener’s neurons exhibit anticipatory activity, to bigger activity bigger understanding of the information.

ACTIVIDAD CEREBRAL COMPARTIDA.

NEW COLLIDERS

Although in the last Plenary Session of the International Conference on High Energy Physics carried out yesterday, evidences of the existence of Higgs boson were not shown (hypothetical particle that gives mass to other particles), at least it is known where it isn’t located. Previous experiments suggested that Higgs boson had a mass between 114 and 185 GeV: gigaelectronvolts (1 GeV = mass of 1 proton). Guy Wormser and Robert Roser informed yesterday that the 2 detectors of the Tevatron (USA); had discarded that the mass of Higgs boson were between 158 and 175 GeV (¼ range of calculated energies). Given the elusivity of Higgs boson, now is tried to build a collider but big with coming funds from all over the world. Instead of flying along giant rings the new one will accelerate electrons and positrons straight (International Linear Collider). With it, Tevatron and LHC, are announced deaths. And ¡they cost so much!.

NUEVOS COLISIONADORES

¡Y, costaron tanto!.

HIGGS BOSON

Today, at the International Conference on High Energy Phyics (ICHEP), that takes place in Paris we will know in a plenary session the techniques and experiments carried out in the Tevatron Particle Collider at Fermilab (US), at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC/Francia) and in the accelerator of particles Hera (Hamburg), in relation to the possible discovery of Higgs boson. Something is known in this respect, since well studied particles W and Z, contain parts of Higgs boson. At the moment it is not clear how close are we of this fundamental discovery.

SMART COMPUTERS

Scientific outpost in computation is copying in parallel animal biologic networks in order to create computers able to see, to hear, to make decisions and until being emotion moved. Advance and backwardness, because to copy is not to innovate. Copies are not similar to the original. Real innovation would be to design a computer (quantum or other), able to compute instantly the origin, life and death of a storm, to know instantly the final form and product of a vegetable starting from the computation of its genome or the structure of a unique leaf; to establish the whole structure of our unique satellite, with the simple computation of the sway of earth marine waves. Thomas Wennekers (U. Plymouth), tries to build computers that see and listen learning how neurons communicate among them. For it he simulates a groups of neurons and laminar microcircuits to great scale of visual neocortex (implied in seeing and listening), crucial fact to recognize objects and words.

For their side Steve Furber (U. of Manchester), has created the software SpiNNaker with multiple chips that simulate a great number of neurons and whose only communication with the rest of the world is a little signal or sound that send information to a net of small computers. Each arm processor of SpiNNaker, simulates 1,000 neuronal models. Furber tries to design a chip with 18 arms processors, 16 of which will models neurons that will learn to see. The goal of Furber is to create a system composed of a billion neurons, controlled by a million of processors ARM. The topic is to understand how the brain passes a very big lot of computational elements from a small area to another, managing the system without being surpassed by superior coordination of these processors. A way to do that is that individual processors use less power, be every time but small and be endowed with self-organization capacity.

COMPUTADORAS INTELIGENTES

SUPERSTAR

Until recently it was thought that existed a superior limit (150 times the mass of our sun), for massive stars. A myth that has just collapsed when being had discovered a star 265 times but massive that our sun, with 1 000 000 years of existence. The star –part of a massive cluster of stars of Tarantula Nebula, to 165,000 years-light of our Milky Way- was discovered by the European Space Observatory's it Telescopes, located in the desert of Atacama. It has been predicted that it superficial temperature surpasses the 40,000 grades Celsius, is 7 times but heat and several millions of times but brilliant that our sun.

EUTHANASIA IN DEUTSCHLAND

In Germany, people’s right to self-determination and euthanasia with medical consent, is a current matter because according to surveys 1/3 of registered German doctors would agree to helping patients to die. Jörg Dietrich Hoppe, President of the Medical Association of Germany considers that any german physician that wants to help to induce euthanasia, can do that. However, Hoppe explained that the survey only confirms that the vast majority of doctors understand the suffering and suicidal wishes of terminally ill patients, but a real contribution is unclear. In any case most of German doctors rejects this attitude. Hoppe argues that suicide is not something that necessarily be attributed to doctors. Any terminal patient can establish a relationship of trust with other people and decide their death. Finally Hoppe believes that if the medical attitude to help a person to commit suicide would be majority it would damage the physician-patient relationship. Hoppe says that although most physicians support the practice of euthanasia most not practice it, because they will receive sanctions from their unions and society.

WASPS AGAINST MANIOC MEALYBUGS

Thanks to the entomologist's pioneer efforts Hans Herren (biocontrol of crops’ plagues) and the current collaboration of institutions like the International Center Tropical for Agriculture (CIAT), International Institute Tropical of Agriculture (IITA) and the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), Thailand prepares to drop from the air to 250 000 tiny wasps (Anagyrus lopezi), with the purpose of eliminating Cassava mealybugs (Phenacoccus manihoti) that alone feeds of cassava (manioc), and has begun to destroy 200 000 cultivated hectares with manioc, essential staple in the diet of millions of Asian people. The 2 mm long wasps don't constitute a threat for human or animals. Females wasps inject their eggs to the interior of Cassava mealybugs killing them as the larva grows. Considering -according to Tony Bellotti (CIAT)- that 60% of the global exports (1.5 billion dollars), of Thailand are of manioc; the employment of expensive chemicals that damage ecosystems and contaminate foods, would be an environmental vandalism. The scientist added that wasps carry out his job quickly and effectively. However in the long term it is hoped to develop genetic varieties of manioc with resistance to mealybugs.

OIL FLOOD: SECOND THOUGHTS

Now that according to the British Petroleum (BP), the raw oil flood has been controlled (April 22, 2010) in the Gulf of Mexico, important reflections have emerged, as those of Henry Petroski (Engineer historian/University of Duke) who in their book : Success Through Failure, assures that as in previous disasters, procedures for extraction of petroleum in deep waters will be reanalyzed, improved and will not be repeated again. Let us remember the Hindenburg's explosion which forces to replace Hydrogen for Helium (less inflammable) and that after the collapse of the suspension bridge Tacoma (1940, Tacoma Narrows Bridge), because of ferocious up and down ondulations induced by strong winds, suspension bridges were built but big, with suspensors but rigid and a second deck.

Gary Halada (State University of New York, Stony Brook), assures that this type of catastrophes impels innovations. In 1967, the engineer Eric H. Brown, said : Engineering of structures, is the art of modeling materials that we don't understand to forms that we don't analyze completely, that mobilizes forces not valued completely in constructions with potential dangers that the public doesn't suspect. For the forensic engineer David W. Fowler (Texas University), will be improved the devices of prevention of escape of submarine petroleum (blowout preventers), the same ones that located above the wells will impede the exit of raw oil in emergencies. Although many will want that no longer submarine petroleum be extracted it won't happen. The BP will continue perforating wells in deep waters, in the gulf of Mexico, Brazil, West Africa and Egypt. In order to have money for these projects, the BP has just sold part from their passive capital to Apache company.

Gary Halada (State University of New York, Stony Brook), asegura que este tipo de catastrofes impulsa innovaciones.

PLANTS THAT THINK AND MEMORIZE

In The secret life of plants (1974/Editorial Diana/Mexico), Peter Tompkins and Christopher Bird, lectures widely about reading of thought and extrasensorial perception seemingly developed by plants, the same that carry out photosyntethic processes, synthesizing foods for man and animals. Now, works carried out by Stanislaw Karpinski (Warsaw University of Life Sciences/Poland), suggest that to think and to remember are activities carried out by plants -at least- those of Arabidopsis genre. Leaves would pick up information contained in the light, transmitting it to the whole of the plant, in a similar way to like our nervous system works.

When light impacts on a single leaf, the plant responds to it as a whole. Participate of this reaction a group of cells (bundle sheath cell), true nervous system of plants, present in each leaf. The light induces chemical reactions in leaves, continued even when light disappears. The plant picks up information coded in the light, to respond and to survive in front of changes and environmental streses. The changes depend on the color of the light. The plants use the information contained in the light (biological conputation), to be immunized against illnesses, stimulating protective chemical reactions. Plants exposed to light for one hour resist infections. Without previous light the plant is infected. This way, plants would have specific memory for the light, which is an kind of intelligence.

PLANTS THAT THINK AND MEMORIZE

SYNCARDIA

Among the few existent devices dedicated to maintain alive to people with heart terminal failure is the heart total temporary artificial, pneumatic, portable device of Syncardia Inc., that allows to patients that wait heart donor to walk and to remain at home. It weighs 6 kg, has a volume of 75 cm3, uses analogical technology, 2 batteries of lithium ions, a primary motor and a backup if there are problems. The device replaces the 2 original ventricles, while staying the 2 auricles and the original aorta to pump the blood to the body. The system pumps packages of air through 2 tubes of 70 cm of long and 1 diameter cm that facilitate the sending of blood to the implanted artificial ventricles. Other 2 tubes of 75 cm of long leave the artificial ventricles below the costal cage. Power source, batteries and others devices are carried in a external bag. While Syncardia drives a clinical study in USA to improve effectiveness and security, devices of 50 cm3 are being developed for small adults and teenagers.

OPTOGRAPHY

Retinal optogramm

For but of 100 years, some researchers try to identify criminals examining the images recorded in the retina of the victims few minutes or hours after having happened their deaths (Optography -images between life and death- fixed in the retina by photochemical action of light, showing white images on a purple or red background). In 1975, Evangelos Alexandridis and the student Kloth Thomas Mann experienced with rabbits, anesthetizing them and projecting in their eyes different slides during 2 minutes, after which they killed them. Then, they maintained the eyes of dead rabbits then in Potassium-aluminum solutions blended with saline. After removing the retina, they placed it on balls of white porcelain, analyzing them, next. The first optogram of this type showed the number 75, other scenes and until a Salvador Dalí drawn, outlined previously by Alexandridis. The researcher concludes that successes of this type were only possible with very intense light and prolonged exposition of the scenes (included the criminal, given the case). Of another side, the optograms were of short duration (up to 5 minutes). Contrarily and according to the artist Ogbourne optograms are technically impossible and always vague.

OPTOGRAFIA

PATIENTS RESEARCH THEIR OWN ILLNESSES

Some patients are participating with their own voice and thought in essays with experimental drugs. They have created Patient movement 2.0 and online community fórums like PatientsLikeMe, where biomedical research are treated in free and collaborative form. The patient N.N. refers via online that in 2008 she introduced in her stomach 150 mg of lithium dissolved in water by means of a tube in order to slow the progression of her Lateral Sclerosis Amiotrophic (ALS). Although she achieved adequate concentrations of lithium in her blood, she stopped its administration because it put her nervous and because other patients said that lithium seemed not to work in ALS, feeling the necessity to experience with informal medications (off-label) and other alternative ones.

Although the research reported in PatientsLikeMe were carried out in real time, not blind and without controls, some scientists (Richard Bedlack/Duke University), say that there is not substitute for randomized, double blind and controlled by placebos essays. Bedlack, has created a system (ALSUntangled), monitored by an international team of scientists that investigate new treatments at request of the own patients. The data are collected, revised, and discoveries are published in online, peer reviewed and of free disposition articles. (Lateral Amyotrophic Sclerosis).

OUR EARLY UNIVERSE

Although images captured by the Telescope Planck –launched by the ESA in May/2009- correspond to first visible lights (400 000 years after having happened the Big Bang), that formed matter, space and time, we have now an afterglow picture of the creation of our universe, showing our Milky Way. The aim of the Telescope Planck was to create an universal map of background cosmic radiation (Microwave Background: CMB), liberated after happening the formation of the first matter atoms.

Although microwave radiation was detected in 1960s, 16 years ago, Cobe satellite produced the first cosmic map of radiation (derived of the Big Bang in any direction of the universe), starting from which were formed galaxies under it influences of the gravity. The images show our Milky Way trimmed of stars, the CMB forming a yellow spotted, up and under the Milky Way, stellar powder of blue color and central red, hot bands, showing differences of temperature and density of not formed galaxies that would transform in galaxies with the time.

NUESTRO UNIVERSO TEMPRANO

NEW MATH TRANSLATORS

In the last 25 years, statistical systems that correlate words among 2 languages, have facilitated quick and consistent translations. Online translators analyze parallel texts (Voltaire and Proust in English and French), establishing correspondences among words. Now that Ben Snyder, Regina Barzilay (MIT) and Kevin Knight (Southern California University), have developed deciphering and translation systems of old languages in hours, it is expected that the number of translated languages will be increased (Google translates only 57 languages). However the perfect translation requires a logic synthesis and intuition that computers don't possess (Andrew Robinson). Humans recognize easily the meaning of a word starting from its context. Before it, current PCs needs to duplicate their intuition, narrowing the relationship of the language to decipher with other near related (ancient semitic Ugaritic-Hebrew) and systematizing the correlations (symbols with similar frequencies), of the alphabet to decipher with other near related. Ugaritic alphabet has 30 letters, 29 of which have Hebrew counterparts.

Regina Barzilay, has developed probabilistic technics that infer automatically exact models of natural languages and solve complex tasks of real natural language. Her software (Newsblaster), is able to carry out metanalysis of different news sources conforming appropriate summaries. By means of statistical learning (machine-learning software), she teaches to PCs to carry out better translations, feeding them with a couple of equivalent texts. After recognizing similarities among words (matching), the PC derives its own set of rules, establishing new sentences, estimating the probability that each interpretation is correct. Newsblaster recognizes 80% of similarities, summarizing cognates, words with common roots, prefixes, suffixes, recognizing cognates of tripartite structure in another languages. Newsblaster uses frequencies of symbolic mappings between one and another related language, selecting mapping that are identified better with consistent sets of suffixes and prefixes. Although the system doesn't use contextual information to solve ambiguities, the goal of this study is to incorporate logic and intuition used by human decipherers in an unsupervised statistical model.

NUEVOS TRADUCTORES MATEMATICOS

DOGMATIC SCIENCE

In an article published by El Comercio-Peru (July/04/2010/. Fallibility of science), Umberto Eco discusses the nature of scientific research, expressing the opinion of an author defender of antidogmatic nature of science -coming from experimental essay and error- being this, the reason for which human knowledge is never absolute. By the way science is innovative if it creates doubts around certain dominant ideas of the time. It is antidogmatic when after scrutinizing existent paradigms, rejects some. A healthy scepticism is a good weapon in science. Contrarily, science is dogmatic when it accepts easily Darwin, Einstein or Copernicu's suppositions and doesn't question certain current cultural paradigms. If when pleading for paradigms science defends its power, it is capable to call heretics to those that challenge its authority. Science is dogmatic if it doesn't filter information (that coming from internet). Completes this discussion, an article of Geoffrey Munro published in The Journal of Social Applied Psychology, in which 100 students judged the quality of scientific information. In the study when the results threatened to change the point of preexistent view or didn't coincide with the way of thinking of one participant group, these rejected and ignored it.

GENES AND CENTENARIANS

The biostatistician Paola Sebastiani and the geriatrician Thomas T. Perls (Boston University), studied the genomes of 1055 centenarians (genome-wide association study of exceptional longevity), coming from New England finding a set of genetic variants that predict extreme longevity :EL). With these data they built a genetic model composed by 150 single nucleotide polimorphisms (SNPs), able to predict the EL, with 77% of accuracy. So, centenarians would have a certain number of genes that would protect us of a group of illnesses, instead of an alone one. The easy identification of these genes in such small sample (1,055 centenarians), is due -according to Sebastiani- to emission of powerful signals indicating their presence. According to the researcher but of 75% studied centenarians possess these genetic variants. Keeping in mind that 25% of studied people lacks these variants, Sebastiani argues that environmental factors and the particular lifestyles of people help to age better. Keeping in mind that at the moment 1 centenarian exists for each 6000 North Americans, it is necessary to establish preventive measures to promote an aging but healthy.

CENTENARIOS Y GENES PROTECTORES

OVARIAN TRANSPLANTS INCREASE LIFESPAN

A press report of the 26 Annual Meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embriology, informed that transplants of ovaries restore the fertility, rejuvenate and it lengthens lifespans of female mice, making possible that such effect also happens in human females. Transplants of ovaries preserve the fertility of women after cancer treatments or to extend their reproductive life. Noriko Kagawa led author of the paper said that transplants lengthened lifespan of female mice in little but of 40%. Kagawa and their team carried out 2 experiments: I) Removed the 2 ovaries of young female mice (140 days), transplanting them to 6 old female mice (525 days). II) Removed a single ovary of young female mice (170 days), transplanting them to 8 old female mice (540 days). Female mice usually reach menopause at 525 days, dying on average at 548 days.

All female mice that received ovaries recovered their fertility, were more active, showed interest in male mice, copulated and had breedings. In the first experiment the reproductive cycles lasted but of 80 days and in the second but of 130 days. The lifespan lengthens to 877 days in those that received one ovary and to 915 days in those that received 2 ovaries. Being evident that transplants induced the continuation of hormonal functions, it is not clear why ovarian transplants increased the lifespan of female mice. Although a minority of women has been autotrasplanted with its own ovaries after anticancerous treatments, it will attempt in the future transplant other women's ovaries using a minimum of drugs to suppress the immune natural answer. Kagawa says that her team has transplanted successfully ovaries maintained thawed during a good time.

ALMOST HUMANS MACHINES

TO SEE VIDEO:MEDICAL VIRTUAL ASSISTANT. NYT.

Taken from NYTimes
In the Peruvian University where I teach prevails the concept that 4 year medicine students, should practice and to learn neat and exquisitely the anamnesis and physical exam, to carry out with them initial diagnosis of illnesses. Nevertheless, in the last years in some universities of Peru and in most foreigner it is added to the above-mentioned data of auxiliary exams (technology, sometimes very sophisticated). Not consider technology to carry out initial diagnoses of diverse illnesses implies a devaluation of technology with preference for data gathered handmadely. Something silly since the anamnesis is carried out at the present time by robots that listen, speak, see, reason, learn and are able to arrive to precise preliminary diagnoses. In the measure that softwares of artificial intelligence (AI), are perfected they will be but precise, even overcoming the one carried out by current doctors. Where will go the 8 or 12 years of doctors' training?. The study of a patient can not be based fundamentally on anamnesis, physical exam. Doctors will need a new training, to carry out metanalisis, research, to carry out diagnoses using the best evidences and a dialectical reasoning. Always go ahead of the frontier of knowledge. If the technology is quick, efficient and precise why to locate it in a second plane?. We should prefer it, because our senses are imperfect.

Using photographic cameras, headsets and others, Microsoft, ATT and Google has developed doctor virtual assistants (avatars), able to listen and to sustain conversations with sick people, giving them a diagnose preliminary or deriving them to specialists. The sequence of words of a conversation is calculated with stored data of how often different words and sentences are typically used. The virtual assistant establishes appointments and by means of simple reasoning rules establishes the severity of the illness. The AI tries to simulate human thought. Many telephone calls are now carried out entirely in an automatic way. If the robot detects bad temper in a call, this is derived to the manager. With the time these machines will be students' tutors, will attend surgeons, will drive cars with security, managed the time of their bosses and will coordinated the work with colleagues but effective. It already exists, a virtual personal assistant able to take note of the order, to look for information and to take actions (Siri Company), in alliance with Nuance Communications, company of voice recognition and conversion of the same one to text.

MAQUINAS CASI HUMANAS
