VENEZUELA SATELLITE

We don't understand why up to now Peru is incapable of investing 406 million dollars to have an own communication satellite, as has just made it Venezuela yesterday. From the 2006, we make this birdcall to our rulers. The satellites that provide sure data to each instant -not every 15 days, as they make in conventional systems- are not unreachable economically. Nigeria, affected always for deforestations, droughts, floods and eruptions of volcanos, has 2 own satellites, inside a program that pretend to install a satellital net for prevention of natural desaters. Alone the Niño’s Phenomena of 1982 and 1993 costed but of 3000 million dollars to national treasury.

No way speaking of educational and social benefits, TV, radio, internet access, tele-education and tele-medicine, for big social groups, Latin American integration, communication and military. To have them implies to pass from the stone age to that of gold, in communications. The successful launching from China, of the satellite of communications Venesat-1/Simon Bolívar (15 years of useful life), has several implicancias: 1) at the same time that he/she gives technological sovereignty to Venezuela, Preposition the tecno-military-Chinese arm to Latin America, including listens of phone conversations 2) it increases the military might from Venezuela 3)agrega tangible help to the geopolitical pretenses of Venezuela, opening the technique to other Latin countries. In the face of the impossibility of to build and to throw an own satellite, Uruguay gave Venezuela one of the last two hemispheric orbits that he had left in exchange for 10% of the capacity of transmission of the satellite.
SATELITE VENEZOLANO

MINI X-RAYS DEVICE.

The magazine Nature publishes in the cover of its last number the bone of a human finger, obtained with emissions (of 30 seconds), of flows of electromagnetic radiation -including X-rays, as a Scotch Tape 3M is rubbed and liberated of its adhesive surface of contact. Liberation conditioning strong and short bursts (billionth of second), of electrons (triboluminiscence), containing each one 300,000 photons of X-rays. The experiment was carried out by researchers of the University of California/Los Angeles. Don't hope to obtain X-rays in the office, because it is needed a vacuum medium. The Scotch Tape 3M (cellophane polymers, containing C, H and O), was created in 1930, by Richard Drew. A discovery that can be used to design portable medical devices to destroy tumors by emission of pulses of electrons and also to generate nuclear fussion. If the energy obtained after unrolling adhesive tape, is directed to ions implanted in modified tapes, these could accelerate its kinetics, so as colliding among them could melt and generate energy similar to that of sun.

ERWIN SCHRODINGER

I) The scientific portrait of Erwin Schrődinger (Prize Nóbel/1933/Wave Mechanic), deployed in Der Spiegel, come back to a scientist of Einstein's same size. It cares of his work, the math descripctión of quantum mechanics that we use in chemical reactions and subatomic particles until today, and his innovators ideas in the area of the Biogenétic. When in "What is Life. The Physical Aspect of the Living Cell" (1944), hipotetized the existence of an cell order inserted in aperiódic crystals, it was evident that he suggested the existence of a genetic code, delegating a central role to the "omnipotent gene" that "autorganized systems". If in this work we discover a scientist with innovative, deep and clear thoughts, in "Mind and Matter" (1956), we discover a philosopher asking himself : "how finds each individual, his place in a changing and complex world?. Schrödinger did approach scientific problems, in a way not imagined previously. His thought -that cost what is worth a feather and a paper- was heir of the ideas of Schopenhauer, Hindu wisdom, Ernst Mach and the phenomenology of Edmund Husserl. A free thinker that still in some of the strange experiments that he carried out, was always a loner, a fellow, independent, active in many areas, more than anchored in a single place. A versatile and deep scientist that united seemingly separate phenomena, opening interpretations based on principles, more than in conclusions. While conventional scientific realization absorbed scientific problems in math formulas, closing the case, Schrődinger, put queries, returning again and again to the topic, reinterpreting the phenomena from the beginning, generating new hypóthesis, leaving solutions but of the times without answer neither scientific realization (Schrődinger’ style).

II) In "Mind and Matter", he wrote "How it is possible that existing an unique natural phenomenon, do exist an infinite variety of representations and interpretations -as each observer's perspectives does exist-?. He argue that multiplicity is apparent, due to our limited capacity mental and our unskillful to obtain continuous answers of nature. We are not still in position, of saying what really happens in the world. Alone we can describe that observed in individual concrete cases. We are outside of the material world, of which we are alone spectators. As long as, the sensations and ideas don't belong to the world of energy, it cares to remember that our scientific vision of the world, lacks ethical and aesthetic values. A material world conceived by force of extracting our self (mind with values). Ideas that have allowed us to understand better how we enthrone the things of the world by means of our senses (perception) or by means of concepts (experience), in appropriate synthesis linked to Hegel's history of philosophy and Darwinist evolutionism, echoes of the Perspectivism and/or Theory of the Relativity. It continues being clear then that we don't know a lot about the world, that it continues being complex in spite of all our discoveries. Like Newton, in My view of the world (1961), he sustains the existence of an universal unique conscience (Oneness of mind) and a reverence for the life, emphasizing that plurality is a false construction, what counts is the unit. As long as each one of his texts continues stimulating our consciences, Schrődinger will continue alive.

III) Schrődinger’s legacy is that his ideas have facilitated a new synthesis of sciences of life that consider today alive systems, as open, and self-organized in order to maximize its ecological sustainability, in which that everything is more than sum of the parts. An everything in term of relationships and processes. An open system with need of feeding with continuous flows of matter and environmental energy, to continue be alive. Systems analyzable today, by means of non linear math and patterns of cybernetic organization in which stand out closed loops, networks, feedbacks, self-regulation and self-organization. Appropriate systems to math patterns (interrelationships, order, quality), structural (constituents, matter, quantity) and organization (interrelationships among components of the system). Alive organisms are far from equilibrium, what allows them to evolve, adcquire spontaneous order and self-organization, base of development, learning and evolution. Organisms in equilibrium, are dead organisms. Self-perpetuation of alive networks, conditioning the emergency of knowledges, fundamental characteristic of life processes (I Think, then I exist). When arguing Ilya Prigogine (Chemistry Prize Nobel, 1977) and Fritjof Capra that cognitive, alive systems, with perceptions, emotions and behavior don't necessarily require brains with nervous systems, they agree with the potential creation of intelligent artificial systems (AI).

ERWIN SCHRODINGER

Cuando en “What is Life.

MOVING the EARTH in the SPACE

I) In Summaovni (Lulu/2008/pp:127-128), we propose a system of mirrors mounted on small asteroids reflecting the light of the sun permanently toward the Earth with the aim to revert cooling or to maintain continually illuminated the Earth. In the last years it has been verified an increment of emissions of CO2 and a bigger melting of the ice of the poles. Recent news inform us about potential reversions of global heating by means of extensive terraqueous shadows. Idea of the Russian Mikhail I. Budyko, who in 1974, intended to inject the stratósphere annually with millions of tons of particles of SO2, which after reacting with O2, water and other molecules would form minuscule drops of sulfate conformed by water, H2SO4, powder, salt and others, on which acid and water would condense bouncing 1% of solar light, toward the space. Solution doesn't exempt of side effects. David Battisti of the U/Washington, argues that CO2 heats the planet day and night, summer and winter. When ice melts and goes to the sea a wide white surface is replaced by another dark and hot. The stratospheric SO4 produces darkness only when the light of the sun shines, cooling more the tropics that the poles. As less solar light reaches the surface of the Earth there will be less evaporation, particularly in the tropics, what will cause rains.

II) The other idea that I propose in Summaovni (Lulu/2008/pp:124), is move the earth away from the sun in order to become cooler, an idea that we discard later for the convincing that such an action could unchain enormous energy detachments, causing vast natural disasters. The idea of moving the Earth comes from the writer Olaf Stapledon, who in 1930 proposed to move the earth, near Venus first and later close to Neptune, when it becomes uninhabitable. Greg Laughlin (U/California) believes viable this possibility as long as he estimates that the gassy planets Jupiter and Saturn, could never have been formed in the place where they are at the moment, for not existing enough gas neither powder in those places, for that then.

MACHINE BRAIN INTERFACE.

As we know, our brains receive and emit orders to muscles (final efectors of movements), by means of nerves that ultimately work with electric signals. When electric impulses are not transmitted, arms and/or legs are paralyzed. Under this mark, in 2007, researchers of the U/Duke/Medical Center, achieved that monkeys with paralyzed arms, operate robotic arms as if was own, implanting 96 and 320 microelectrodes, respectively in the motor brain of 2 female monkeys (Macaque rhesus). Cortical neurons analyzed signs that allowed to robotic arms to move a joystick linked to a cursor on a video screen. Days later one of the monkeys did without of the movement of its arms, as long as it was capable of controlling the robotic arm with single visual feedback and neurons of its brain. Miguel Nicolelis, said then: 1) that the animal assimilated the robotic arm in its brain as own, opening the possibility to build prosthesis for paralytics, affected people of strokes and damage to the their spine. 2) affected people would operate alone with cerebral signals, by means of brain-machine interfaces restoring diverse functions, even being able to correlate human cerebral signals with those of animal experiments. 3) John Cavanagh, says that the brain adapts for itself to new situations and if this capacity is tuned, the interaction would allow to manipulate a steer-vehicle, to operate domestic machines, to answer the telephone, to control a PC, etc.

A second experiment -improvement of the previous one- allows to paralyzed muscles of the wrist of monkeys, to be moved and controlled by cortical neurons, by means of electric signals rerouted with the help of microelectrodes. 4) a process that implies to decode the activity of dozens of neurons to reply actions (grip objects). Chet Moritz U/Washington/Seattle and their team, discharged the direct electric stimulation of 1 neuron on paralyzed muscles, rerouting them by means of an external circuit to a computer endowed with a cursor, using single cerebral activity. After paralyzing the wrist’s muscles temporarily with local anesthesia, rerouted the signals of the electrodes to the wrist’s muscles, finding that monkeys controlled its paralyzed members using only cerebral activity, learned in less than 1 hour, not caring if neurons were trained to carry out other muscle functions. 5) According to Andrew Schwartz, with it is demonstrated that the brain is able to learn using only neuronal activity. 6) with the time, implantables ultra thin chips could include post-sináptics connections. 7) For the present it is known that monkeys first observe the movement that they will and then they imagine it. As small corporal movements, require thousands of nervous signals, scientists use an algorithm to identify dominant signals (vectorial population), the same that are sending to robotic arms.
INTEFACES CEREBRO-MAQUINA

PAPERS THAT DISTORT SCIENCE

In a recent article (Why Current Publication Practices May Distort Science), published in PLOS, the topic played is the access to scientific publications, on the part of researchers. I) The authors assure that authority of Science, Nature and other important journals derive of their selectivity, conditioned artificially by a desbalance between abundance of articles and the scarcity of journals of high impact. Scarcity based on the belief that selectivity is equal to quality. "Nature - where the judgment that prevails -is that of editors and not of referees- alone publishes 10% of about 170 papers received per week. In Science less than 8% of the received papers are published". Other journals has as primordial interest in articles related with drug trials, high volume of transactions, publicity, profit of reprints, etc. The authors, add that being the journals economic products, that is transfer of knowledge from producers to consumers, they are critical in the drug’s development and marketing, capital funding, boosters of scientific’s careers -being imposed here- like as in any company, the winner's curse (preferential publication of a small proportion of impact articles, not necessarily representative of samples of the real world), being this way that many journals finishes distorting the reality of scientific data generated in laboratories and clinical investigations.

II) Of another side in some fields, most of published papers shows formally significant results that elude the discriminating effect of statistical tests, being published only papers with amazing results of treatments. Papers with negative results are not published. 49 papers (1990-2004), related with effectiveness of medical intervention, were contradicted or exaggerated opposed in publications appeared in the 2005. III) In front of the above-mentioned, the authors suggest the employment of digital platforms, with the purpose of allowing the publication of the biggest number of manuscripts with reasonable hypothesis and appropriate methods. Digital journals should publish all received and revised papers, including those appropriate for publication but rejected on subjective reasons of priority. Science after all is subject to great uncertainty, not knowing most of us which information will be the most useful. If the search of truth and knowledge, will continue being the essence of scientific discovery, the advance of science will continue depending on free competition of ideas. Therefore, it is necessary to reconsider how judge and disseminate scientific data appropriately. We don't know what papers will lead to big achievements.

CAN MACHINES THINK?

In 1950, in Mind (Computing Machinery and Intelligence), Alan Türing asked himself : Could a computer think? ¿How we could know it?. Then he propose that a human judge sustains a simultaneous natural conversation with a human and a machine. If in some moment, the judge was uncapable to discern who was human, it was assumed that the machine had passed the test. Turing settled down that the conversation must be limited to a unique text channel (computer keyboard + screen or, a teletype). This way, if the mind could be explained physically, existed the possibility that minds can be generated artificially.

To such aim and from 1990 Hugh Loebner, established the Loebner Prize for Artificial Intelligence (AI), tending to promote basic investigations around this Test of Turing. 7 days ago, the german company Artificial Solutions, (creator of more natural speech softwares for their clients), won the Prize Loebner/2008, for its almost human software Elbot (chatbot), created by Fred Roberts. The software deceived to 30% of judges that considered it human. Roberts waits now, to endow it of sense of humor. Listen the conversation. Talk with Elbot

. Hable con Elbot.

BRAIN NATURAL THINKING and SPOKEN LANGUAGES

Does it influence the brain natural order of thinking in the language or even in our behavior, when we speak?. According to a paper published in the PNAS, the cerebral natural order of thinking influence on the language. People with different native languages, organize their brain events to be spoken -in the same way- although their native grammars be different. The current Turkish language, uses the grammatical order SOV: subject/object/verb (woman/knob/twist). Spaniards, Englishmen and Chinese that speak Mandarin, use the order SVO: subject/verb/object (woman/twist/knob).

Susan Goldin-Meadow (U/Chicago), urged to a group of 40 people (Englishmen, Spaniards, Turks and Chinese that spoke Mandarin), to carry out activities using gesture languages -with their hands, without speaking- noticing that all employed the order SOV, independently of the patterns of their native language. The same thing happened in noncommunicative tasks, like reconstructing events ordering transparent pictures, being derived the existence of a natural brain order (SOV), used by humans to represent non verbal events. Goldin-Meadow suggests that this brain natural order influence the development of languages. But, as languages need to be semantically clear and rhetorically pleasant, suffer pressures that take them away from the natural order SOV, being derived the order SVO. At the moment the 2 dominant orders (SOV and SVO), give account of 90% of native languages. If the used grammar goes against brain natural order, it forces an additional cognitive cost to speak the language (like it could be the case of English).
PENSAMIENTO NATURAL CEREBRAL y LENGUAJE HABLADO

DINO'S GIGANTISM.

Why certain dinosaurs -especially saurópods - did they reach gigantic sizes?. According to Martin Sander (U/Bonn), if the rule of Cope is valid (gradual increase of size in phylogenetic lineage), the mass reached by saurópods would depend of the limits of the design of its body general plan. Hokkanen (1986) and Benton (1989), has estimated this limits in 150 tons, for terrestrial vertebrates, to function of muscular force and necessary skeleton to mobilize the body. Big sizes have selective advantages (better defense, but capacity predatory, more acceptable foods, but success to mating, in inter and intra specifics competitions, but longevity, but intelligence, better survival under adverse conditions) and, also disadvantages (bigger time of development pre and post natal, bigger demand of resources, but extinction risk, ability diminished to adapt to periods of low abundance). Now, scientific of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (Biology of Sauropod Dinosaurs: Evolution of Gigantism) and Switzerland investigates from the 2004, the causes of saurópod gigantism (hervibores with about 120 types, some of 40 m of long, 17 m of high, 100 ton of weight), with the help of an impressive interdisciplinary project.

Until recently the gigantism of dragonflies of the Carboniferous and of sauropods was attributed to a decrease of the oxygenate (O2). But Hengst et al (1996), when demonstrating that Apatosaurus, alone could have been developed in atmospheres with atmospheric content of 02 of the order of 30%, has placed these statements in interdict. Now: Sander and Marcus Clauss (U/Zurich), have suggested 3 reasons for the gigantism of saurópods: I) they didn't chew, they swallowed their foods, with which a lingering digestion, allowed to extract but energy. When not requiring teeth, they had a head of relatively small size, mounted on a long neck compensated with a long tail. It is difficult (although not impossible, due to the presence of airbags in their cervical vertebras) that sauropods has stretched its necks vertically, due to heart and arterial blood pressure problems. II) they would have had a breathing system similar to that of birds, distributed by the whole body. The bones of saurópods have airbags systems, facilitating a quick distribution of O2 -for the whole body- and of metabolism. III) they should have a flexible metabolism, unique way of explaining the fast growth of these giants (from 10 kg to little of being born, up to 50 ton in alone 20 to 30 years). A metabolism that required energy saving and cooling while size was won, to avoid body overheating. IV) The saurópods should have been oviparous, unique way of recovering quickly from suddenly extinctions.

SHORT and LONG TERM MEMORY

I) One of the most important discoveries of recent years in the field of neuroscience is linked to the knowledge of the physiological basis of short-term memory (small amounts of information, held by 20 to 30 seconds) and long-term memory (storage of unlimited amounts of information, for decades). Maker of such discoveries is Eric Kandel (Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine, 2000), for studies in a marine slug: Aplysia (holder of 20,000 neurons, some easily recognized by their large size), foreseeing a prosperous future for brain’s enhancing drugs, which could even allow manipulation of our memories. To achieve the previous Kandel converged methodologically areas of cognitive psychology, neuroscience, molecular biology and brain images creating a new synthesis, a new way of seeing the brain and mind. II) For Kandel, short-term memory requires covalent modification of preexisting synapses, the same ones that can gradually become long-term memory by repeating the stimulus (which means perfection) and association. On the other hand, the long-term memory needs synthesis of new proteins and cyclic enzymes linked to specific memory genes. This kind of memory form also additional synapses between neurons. To activate enzymes of the cascade of cyclic AMP (cAMP), there are several neurotransmitters that increase the concentration of cAMP. According to Kandel injecting cAMP directly into neurons of Aplysia (or blocking this effect with inhibitors of cAMP), strength or blocks the memory, showing that memory can change our brains.
III) An interesting fact is that the memory is reinventing itself all the time. Each time you remember something, memory is altered depending on the context. To Kandel who would love to know why some memories persist forever (memories of first love), call his attention to discover a protein called CPEB, that allows such self-perpetuation. IV) Many of the molecules involved in memory are also found in other cells fulfilling other functions. The memory recruits and combine them, generating new forms. V) Since the brain has approximately 1015 synapsis, its maximum capacity of 100 TByte, emerge as a figure easily to be overtaken by modern computers, but now the problem is not quantity but quality. One PC can not recognize human faces with ease, nor sustain appropriately a glass vase. VI) According to Kandel prospecting of these investigations is the futuristic generation of pills for the memory for those who lose it, by age, accidents or illnesses. Also cognitive pills to help people who have problems with learning, expecting that these drugs will slowly change our way of thinking and our culture. VII) Faced with the question of whether suspects in court or job seekers ought to be subjected to brain screenings, Kandel said that this should not be allowed in democratic societies. Governments are not entitled to such information, which is not a ban to study in detail the mind. It is the duty of society to care this knowledge not being badly used.

CHEMISTRY PRIZE NOBEL, 2008

The Prize Nobel of Chemistry has just been distributed in equal parts among Osamu Shimomura (80 years, Japanese. Biological Marine Laboratory -MBL- Woods Hole, MA, USA), discoverer in 1962, of a green fluorescent protein (GFP), extracted from jellyfish Aequorea victory. The green bioluminescence of A. victory is produced by small photoorgans located in its umbrella. Shimomura and Frank Johnson (Princeton), noticed that the protein acquired a green color in front of sun light, yellow in front of a bulb light and green fluorescent in front of UV light. Shimonura discovered that in order to produce bioluminiscence, A.victoria, liberated ions of calcium, which after uniting with the protein aequorin, emitted blue light that turned green when being absorbed by the fluorescent green protein. Using DNA technology was possible later to connect the GFP to certain tagged invisible proteins, watching its movements, positions and interactions, follow destination of damaged cells during illness, of beta cells producers of insulin in the pancreas of embryos in growth, development of brain nervous cells, dissemination of cancer, etc.

Martin Chalfie (61 years, american. Columbia University New York/USA), for demonstrate the value of the GFP as luminous tool for several biological phenomena. As Chalfie needed to see the cells that he investigated, he devised to use the GFP, like a lantern or biological marker inserting the gene of GFP, near the switch of the gene of an organism. To modify a plant or an animal includes to modify the responsible gene for the GFP as part of the change, since the fluorescence will show if the modifications were successful or not improving the efficiency of the investigation. In 1992, with the help of Douglas Prasher (Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in Massachusetts), inserted the gene of the GFP, in the bacteria E. coli. In 1994, Chalfie and colleagues inserted the GFP, in 6 cells of the worm C. elegans, fact that revealed its location by means of their green shine. Roger Y. Tsien (56 years, american. Professor of the University of California, San Diego, The Jolla, CA, USA), who help to understand the fluorescence of GFP, when enlarging the palette of colors beyond the green endowing with several colors to proteins and cells, allowing to follow several processes at the same time. As Tsien needed 2 colors of fluorescent proteins, he produce a mutation in the gene of GFP, obtaining brilliant blue light instead of green, allowing to follow simultaneously different processes. In an experiment, he transformed the brain of a mouse in a kaleidoscope of colors tagging different nervous cells, with different fluorescent proteins.

2008. PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE

50% of money of the Nobel Prize for Physics 2008, has been granted to the japanese/american Yoichiro Nambu (84 years old.University of Chicago's Enrico Fermi Institute), for having mathematically formulated in 1960, the theory of broken symmetry for elementary physical particles. Nambu, said then that some natural simmetries, can be hidden or broken in practice, even though we could not see them. A spontaneous symmetry that reconciles the order of nature in an area seemingly disorganized. The description was useful because united 3 of 4 forces of nature into one theory. If laws for particles and their antiparticles had been the same (equal amounts of matter and antimatter), had led the particles annihilate each other, negating the existence of the cosmos today.

The partners of the prize: Makoto Kobayashi (64 years old. High Energy Accelerator Research Organization, KEK, Tsukuba, Japan) and Toshihide Maskawa (68 years old. Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics-YITP-Kyoto University), hold the existence of at least three families of quarks, elementary particles discovered so far. It required a theory like that of Nambu, to explain the asymmetry known as C (charge) P (parity) violation, discovered in 1964 by the American James Cronin and Val Fitch. Until then, physicists assumed that if the equations of elementary particles, were exchanged (positive with negative or speculars), would be obtained the same answers. Finding that nature work differently was a step in understanding why the nature was made of matter rather than antimatter. The broken symmetry seems to have existed in nature since the beginning of the universe. In recent years several experiments have confirmed the explanations that Masukawa and Kobayashi did in 1972. In 2001, two particle detectors: Babar Stanford (USA) and Belle (Tsukuba/Japan), detected each one by his side and independently, families of quarks, as predicted by Kobayashi and Maukawa 3 decades earlier.

MEDICINE NOBEL PRIZE, 2008

I) We sensed that the Nobel Prize of Physiology and Medicine 2008, would be granted to the German geneticist Thomas Tuschl for his work on RNA interference (gene silencing), technic able to prevent the development of cancer and other diseases so far incurable. Or, perhaps it might be shared with the Japanese Shinya Yamanaka for his work on turning human adult cells in stem cells -by inserting 4 genes- a key step for the creation of human organs, without the use of human embryos. To our surprise the Prize was awarded to virologists, with contributions in understanding of how viral disease is developed and effective preventive methods (vaccines), against epidemic diseases, until recently fatal. Half of the prize has fallen on the German virologist Harald zur Hausen (72 years/U. Düsseldorf/German Cancer Research Center, Heidelberg), because: a) For having swum against the tide for 30 years, sustaining that human papilloma virus (HPV) and not the human Herpes Symplex 2, cause cervical cancer among women. b) For their persistence during the first 5 years in which he could not identify with certainty the oncogenic virus. c) Zur Hausen said the HPV-DNA could exist in a latent state in the tumors and that they can be detected by specific probes (antiDNA against tumor cells containing this viral DNA), a method that far exceeds the traditional test of Pap smear. His discovery showed the natural history of HPV infection, its mechanisms of carcinogenesis and the development of prophylactic vaccines. This way he discovered the subtypes HPV16 and HPV18, which cause 70% of cervical cancers in the world. Human papilloma virus can be detected in 99.7% of women with cervical, cancer histologically confirmed. Thanks to the above, vaccines have been created for preteens women, which provide ≥ 95% protection against the subtypes of high risk: HPV16 and 18.

II) The other half of the prize was shared by French virologists Luc Montagnier and Francoise Barre-Sinoussi of the Pasteur Institute/Paris/France, for discovering the HIV virus, which causes AIDS. The surprise in this case became of non-partnership of Robert Gallo in the Award. Gallo is the discoverer of interleukein-2 (IL-2), a factor necessary for growth of AIDS virus. Gallo and Montagnier's team took a long dispute about who first discovered the HIV and developed tests to identify the virus in blood. Everything indicates that the share of the prize awarded to Barre Sinoussi (companion work of Montagnier), was due to political criteria and European chauvinism. The Karolinska Institute said the award granted to Barre-Sinoussi and Montagnier was due to: a) developing of tests to detect the infection, a necessary step for the development of anti-retroviral drugs b) understanding of the natural history of HIV infection, its identification as part of a family of lentivirus c) information on how the virus evades the immune system of the host, making its eradication difficult despite prolonged treatments. Montagnier is now working on developing a therapeutic vaccine designed to help antiretroviral therapy. The idea is to prescribe treatments of short-term (6 to 9 months) and then vaccinate people so that the end result is that people are infected but not sick.

PREMIO NOBEL deMEDICINA, 2008.

GOD'S PROOFS

The search of God accompanies the humanity since antiquity. In the 11 th century, Anselm of Canterbury intent to put the existence of God, on reasonable bases. Although Anselm believed that God existed, he didn't find simple and clear arguments in favor of this belief. Already transformed into Prior (1060), Anselm doesn't cease in his fight to find a logical proof of the existence of God. Wise philosophers of the antiquity had tried of demonstrating the existence of a rational God. One of them: Aristotle had spread the foundations when settling down that all object in movement had to have been mobilized by another object. Of what was implied that the first mobilized object had been impelled by a motionless mover : God. With it was born the concept of an Universal Designer. Arguments that didn't convince Anselm completely, because according to him, they were product of the observation of the world. Other ways to proved the existence of God, should exist extracted of a pure logic, with simple and clear arguments. One night while he prayed, he had an idea in 2 steps: 1) God is the first one (Onto-logic proof of the existence of God). 2) Nothing thought can be better than God (Teleologic proof of the existence of God). God like first premise, although doesn't explain if God existed or not, in the reality. In front of this Anselm, argued: Must a real God be but complete that one imagined?. Is the work of a painter but perfect that that thought? Logical conclusion: If alone exists the nature, this would not be perfect. If we postulate the existence of the nature, this should exist. God then should be real. Anselm’s summary : God is.

Anselm's thought spent long time hibernating, until being discovered for scholastic, some of which ended up creating a rational Christianity. In 1800, a specialist of the reason: Kant (dedicated to explore the borders of the human mind), would come to refute Anselm's arguments. Kant said that Anselm had elaborated his tests using the filters of his own knowledge and experience. And, as all knows, each mind creates its own reality. What is real in itself is beyond our experience. The Kantian moral theism declares insufficient the speculative tests around the existence of God, to consider impossible to demonstrate its existence apodíctically, although he was convinced of the existence of God. Nowadays most of philosophers agree in that religion has to see but with feelings, secrets and absolute truths, having little to do with the science.

LIQUAVISTA : IT IS COMING

1) Writing 3 continous years this multimedia column, obeys at the same time that to a passion for science and technology, to the full convincing -as we have said it previously- that books and current libraries soon will be museum’s pieces or reservoirs of unique book’s copies, writed at the usual way. Futuristically, we estimate that technology has the obligation of putting to citizens' disposition all and the last possible information (including those coming from specialized libraries), in our mobiles. Idea about to be materialized with the next introduction (13/October/2008), of Liquavista system, of portable reading, of very low energy consumption, of excellent external and internal visibility, based on electrowetting effect, high display and wide variety of portable applications. Electrowetting, implies to apply voltages with the purpose of modifying humid properties of a solid. A drop of water placed on a hidrofóbic surface minimizes its contact area, but when applying to it a voltage difference among electrodes (one in the water and another sub-superficial located under a hydrophobic isolating material), the drop expands. When suspending the voltage the drop regain its original size, because it adjusts its form, to the lowest level of energy of the system. Electrowetting uses electricity to manipulate a thin layer of liquid that changes of color; a true e-paper, full color, completely on-line.

2)Due to migration of publicity to internet, e-papers were long ago expected, to materialize the dream of all: to have a device that allows the readers to upload newspapers in the morning, read the news as they go appearing (feeding it with mobiles or wireless connection). With an investment of £12 millions, Liquavista seeks to create the following generation of flexible devices, full colour, with great displays thank to the help of UK Technology Strategy Board and Plastic Logic. Nick Hampshire, says that for the 2020, 30% of all magazines and books published globally will be digital and portable, with videos full colour and of great quality. Liquavista was founded in the 2006 by the Philips Research Labs in Eindhoven.

LIQUAVISTA
