BRAIN ANTIEPILEPTIC PACEMAKER

After that 40% (out of 110), american epileptic improved after a brain pacemaker implantation (DBS system), German doctors implanted a pacemaker-like in Tubingen, starting in Europe this procedure. The americans developed 50% fewer attacks after 1 year follow up. In addition, 1 in 10 patients were seizure-free for 6 months. The pacemaker stimulates a brain region preventing attacks. This method is of value to those who develop side effects to antiepileptic drugs. Alireza Gharabaghi (Neurosurgical University Clinic in Tübingen), led the surgical German team.
Regular pulses are applied through fine wires to the anterior thalamus. The physical signs of an imminent attack induce the patient to press a button to launch pulses.

BRAIN PACEMAKERr

While normal brain cells communicate among them using electrical impulses, during deep brain-stimulation (DBS), a battery implanted in the chest provides sustained electrical pulses to specific brain areas, interrupting or correcting dysfunctional electrical activity, being possible to alter the speed, strength and length of such pulses. With this procedure are treated successfully until now more than 35 000 people in 250 U.S. hospitals affected of diseases like Parkinson's, chronic pain, anorexia, obesity, child ystonia, Tourette's syndrome and depression. It is a brain pacemaker that includes a section implanted in the chest and another (1 or 2 wires), inserted deep in the brain. Pulses of electricity are sent from the battery to 4 electrodes located on the tip of each brain wire, providing instantaneous relief. If the electrodes are not working they can be removed, a procedure that can cause bleeding (1-3%), strokes and treatable infections. The pioneers (1950) of the technique: Natalia Bechtereva (USSR), Robert Heath (Tulane University) and J. Lawrence (Neurological Institute of New York (1950-60), initially treated acute and chronic pain. Today by sending fast brain pulses it is possible to alleviate severe cases of Parkinson. The success rate of this procedure ranges between 70-100%.
MARCAPASO CEREBRAL
