PIONEERING ARTIFICIAL TRACHEA TRANSPLANT

The successful and pioneering trachea transplant built with interlocking nanopolimers blocks similar to plastic and coated with stem cells to a terminal cancer patient, extends the concept of cyborgs (half organic-half artificial), to unthinkable perspectives. The patient, a 36 year old African who suffered from tracheal cancer has been discharged and is recovering well without receiving antirejection medication. Previous tracheal transplants have been performed with human tracheas coated with stem cells coming from dead people. The operation was performed at the Karolinska University Hospital/Huddinge, Stockholm. Paolo Macchiarini, the surgeon who carried out the operation, designed the Y-shaped trachea, together with Alexander Seifalian (University College/London).

El exitoso y pionero trasplante de una traquea construida con bloques entrelazados de nanopolimeros semejantes al plastico común recubiertos con celulas madre del propio paciente canceroso, amplia el concepto de cyborgs (mitad organico-mitad artificial), a perspectivas inimaginables. El paciente, un africano de 36 años que sufria de un cancer traqueal ha sido dado de alta y se recupera bien sin recibir medicación antirechazo. Los anteriores trasplantes también recubiertos con células madre fueron realizados con traqueas donadas de personas muertas. La operacion fue realizada en el Karolinska Hospital University/Huddinge, Stockholm. El cirujano Paolo Macchiarini que llevo a cabo la operacion, diseño la traquea en forma de Y, conjuntamente con Alexander Seifalian (University College/London).
