LIGHT FOR EVERYONE.

A team of scientists and designers (Sheila Kennedy, architect Kennedy & Violich Architecture. Ltd: KVA/Boston), have patented a device: Portable Light Project, capable to generate digital solid state light (80-160 lumes per watt up for 2 ½ hours), anywhere in the world. The device consists of a row of LEDs (semiconductors that allow passage of electric unidirectional current, with jumps of electrons from the conduction to the valence band, emiting photons), light-emitting continuous filament without glasses or wires. White light LEDs, inserted into textile fibers pockets (clothes, handbags), provide light at night making possible to read, to work and lighting of the houses of 300 Huicholes natives of Sierra Grande/Mexico. During the day, solar photovoltaics minipanels, flexibles (5 x 2 cm), carried on the shoulders of natives stored sunlight (over 4 hours), which recharged standard lithium ion batteries, which in turn lit LEDs. The price of the device: 40-50 dollars -in batches of 500- still are expensive, but we must consider the 30-year duration of LEDs. Panels, batteries, LEDs and circuits are located in various parts and pockets of a portable bag that weighs on average 1.5-2 kilos. Proposers of Portable Light Project ensures that these devices may illuminate the homes of 2 billion people worldwide.
