PHYSICS NOBEL PRIZE, 2013

Finally the Nobel Prize in Physics 2013 was awarded to François Englert (Université Libre de Bruxelles/Belgium) and to Peter W. Higgs (University of Edinburgh/UK), for their theoretical work (1964), about how subatomic particles acquire mass. In 2012, scientists at CERN (Switzerland), confirmed statistically, the existence of the Higgs particle (H), at the LHC (Large Hadron Collider). The theoretical work of Englert and Higgs (central in the Standard Model of Particle Physics), described how are built all in existence, in the known universe, with the existence of a special particle -the Higgs particle- one of two initial building block of the universe - incubated and connected to an invisible field (the other building block), that fills the entire universe, without which we would not exist (our universe is not empty). Only after contacting this field, the subatomic particles acquire mass. Only after trlllions of particle collisions at the LHC could be detected statistically the existence of H particle (appearance of muons, photons or leptons, after the decaying of a particle H. Challenges remain : the nature of the neutrino (doubtfully, without mass) and the nature of non visible universe. Although the nature of dark matter is unknown, it is identified by its gravitational pull on the galaxies. On the other hand, most particle physics models only describe the visible matter -one fifth- of the total matter in the cosmos. Lack identify also, the Kaluza- Klein particle theorized as coming from the fifth dimension.

The russian-danish Andre Geim, 52 (Manchester Centre for Meso-Science and Nanotechnology) and the russian-british Konstantin Novoselov, 36 years (University of Manchester), share this year (2010), the Nobel Prize in Physics for their innovative experiments with bi-dimensional graphene, an ultra-thin piece of carbon (C), the thickness of a regular atom. Geim and Novoselov showed that this kind of C, has exceptional properties, some of which come from quantum physics. It is ultrastrong, leading electricity like copper. As conductor of heat, exceed in it to other materials. Completely transparent is so dense that neither Helium can traverse it. Geim and Novoselov obtained graphene scratching the surface of ordinary pencils, attaching the layers of C, to an adhesive tape, which later was adhered to silicon oxide in order to view the graphene under a microscope.

The structure of graphene allows electrons to travel great distances through it without major trouble and behave like light particles at speed of 1 000 000 m/s. Its transparent structure will permit the building of better DNA sequencing machines and to study the tunnel effect (passage of electrons through supposedly impenetrable barriers). Graphene are studied under the form of new materials with vast practical applications: innovative electronics, transistors faster than silicon, smaller chips, causing more efficient, transparent, touch-sensitive, smaller and more efficient. Being transparent and good conductor, will produce off-road sensors, transparent screens, light panels and solar cells. Mixed with plastic will produce better electric conductive devices, more resistant to heat, to be used as a superstrong, thin, elastic and ultra light material (satellites, aircraft, cars). As a student of physics Novoselov followed Geim to England. Now both are professors at the University of Manchester. Endowed with a tenacious spirit, perhaps both will discover in the future new and big things.
