INMORTALITY

I. The first proposal to remove the mind of a human brain and stored it in a computer hardware (transmigration), was proposed by Hans Moravec (Mind Children: The future of robot and human intelligence). The patient would remain lucid, while developing the operation. After removing the upper skull, special devices would monitor selectively certain neurons of the cerebral cortex surface, estimating patterns and regularities, copying the layer activity. After the copying, it would operate only the emulation copied to the computer. If the patient does not alter his consciousness, the human brain neural layer is removed, replaced definitively by the emulation. The process is repeated in the deeper layers, so that the brain and body die. Consciousness remains in the form of emulation into a robotic body. The human mind of a particular individual will be preserved by maintaining the continuity of the body (pattern-identity). According to Moravec, over the course of our lives, only a part of our pattern-identity remains intact until death. The theory assumes that the mind can be separated from the body. Although the mind is a result of the interaction of matter, the ability to copy, store it and be independent, exists. The human mind would be an independent process triggered from interactions of matter. Oliver Krueger said that Moravec discourages the existence of the body, favoring personalities without bodies (devalued prostheses), seeking purely mental immortality (central tenet of post-humanist philosophy). II. Unlike Moravec, the transhumanists Nick Bostrom and Anders Sandberg do not propose invasive surgeries, they propose a whole brain emulation. Quick scan in a particular brain zone, thoroughly for precise details of its structure and interactions to create an emulation similar to the original. Cloned human brain function at cellular level, automatically it will create high order of organization being an emerging consciousness at the highest level. Initially, brains appear simple, weak, sleepy. Later the whole brain emulation copy our minds. The correspondence between the states of one mind and one emulated that preserves functional relations is called by Hillary Putnam functional isomorphism. If both systems respond with the same behaviors to these stimuli, they will be functionally isomorphic. It is argued that the same mind may be placed in different physical systems. The best emulation is personal identity emulation a continuation of the original mind.

III. The roadmap of Bostrom and Sandberg, involves steps and requirements to achieve whole brain emulation arising from physical dynamics. If the dynamic pattern is replicated in other physical media, mental phenomena emerge the same, because the whole reality is made of a single kind of stuff, in which the parts are aggregated and assembled into dynamic organizational patterns. Very high levels of organization have properties larger than the sum of its parts. Hasker rejects the Cartesian dualist (mind-body), because mental events emerge at higher organizational levels. Consciousness is an emergent property of interactions of neurons. According to Bostrom and Sandberg, to emulate the brain one does not need to understand the entire brain system, but we need to understand higher levels to set the lower. IV. In recent years, many experts claim the superiority of analog computation in brain functioning. Digital computer uses discrete variables, whereas continuous variables are analogous. Analogue computation is represented by continuous quantities, and some of its advantages are information density and capacity for hypercomputation. Although less accurate also exist similar superiority in hearing records. Digital audio brains, sounds artificial and unnatural, so brain emulation would produce a strange awareness of normal human experience. Bostrom and Sandberg's support improved digital brain emulation, saying that implementing an analog brain emulation, could present deep trouble. The brain consists of discrete atoms, forced by quantum laws to generate discrete energy states. Brain devices have physical properties that produce inevitable interference and irregularities (noise), making the device inaccurate. Although the analog system is preferred for neural functioning, the difference between the two is more quantitative than qualitative. Digital computation would help brain function and analog, to learn. Analogue computation would be better because it allows an infinite array of neural configurations. V. Neural noise is caused by outside interference: internal magnetic fields or random fluctuations. Our brain has an uncertain, random, indeterminate and probabilistic system, essential however to its functioning. For Alex Pouget mental ability to perform complex calculations or make important decisions has to do with this wild noise. Some believe that creativity is associated with brain noise irregularities. Free will, would be a mixture of random and deterministic rules. Wild noise can not be easily simulated and may prevent a perfect emulation. If two minds are subject to random variations, their consciences and identities may differ somewhat. According to Nick Bostrom and Anders Sandberg we will survive to our physical death, emulating our brains into computers.

INMORTALIDAD

The future of robot and human intelligence).

ABOUT INMORTALITY

In the book: Long for This World. The Strange Science of inmortality (Harper Collins Publishers), Jonathan Weiner explores science and pseudoscience of immortality, focusing in Auber de Grey’s works , estimating that alone the youths in reproductive age have has their life insured and that ageing weighs little in evolutionary scale. That to cure ageing doesn't require any addition, alone to eliminate the body molecular garbage that accumulates along our life. According to de Grey (gerontologist and cofounder of Sens: Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence), he postulates that we should not make sick when we age and that if we stop the physical deterioration of ageing we will be able with help of current science to live 1,000 years. That the current conception of inevitability of the death is non sense, because we are not programmed to die. In the industrialized world 90% of all deaths happens during ageing ; very few youths die. The old ones make but sick because along the life they accumulate varied types of cellular and molecular damage that alone with the help of high technology will be avoided. Human metabolism is a vast net of biochemical-cell processes that maintain us alive although to a high cost of sude-effects that appear when being born and stay along the life. It is molecular garbage inside and outside of cells, cells that don’t die and are not replaced by division of other cells, conditioning multiple illnesses.

According to de Grey, the understanding and preventive treatment of 7 areas of cellular degeneration will help us to prolong our lives: : I) cells that are not replaced when dying II) cells that don't die, to have lost their ability to respond to signs that induce them to die III) cells that are divided excessively (cancer) IV) decrease of intercellular unions V) non welcome cell cross links VI) old cells that acquire dangerous mutations. Contrary to the current medicine but worried in curing, de Grey is a scientist determined to maintain healthy people. In "Long for This World" other works and other researchers are mentioned : genes of the type Sir2 (Silent Information Regulator) or sirtuins, responsible for effects that enlarge life span contained in diets with restricted calories, the same ones that took to the discovery of resveratrol (contained in grapes), able to activate sirtuins able to prolong the life in laboratory animals. In the final part of the book Weiner meditates about the possibility of prolonging the life span of undesirable people, compensated by the desire of many honest youths affected of lethal illnesses, anxious for alone to live the natural span of their peers. Weiner meditates on the problem of immortality endless, since a reader finds sense in a book alone when he finishes of reading it.

ACERCA DE LA INMORTALIDAD

En el libro : Long for This World.
